GameFly files formal complaint against the USPS photo

Ah, the USPS. I can only speak for my local branch of this lovely organization, but if the rest of the United States Postal Service is anything like my lot, then it is made up primarily of lazy, incompetent imbeciles. Apparently, GameFly feels the same way, having lodged a formal complaint over the high number of damaged goods and the preferential treatment apparently given to competitors.

According to the videogame rental service, the USPS "adopted a practice of manually culling out the DVD mailers of two high-volume shippers of DVDs, Netflix and Blockbuster, for special processing." Gamefly alleges that it was denied similar preferential treatment when requested.

GameFly also asserts that in-transit breakages are still happening despite efforts on the company's part to use cardboard protectors and "tests with larger mailers." The breakage rate is at 1%, which doesn't sound very high but is apparently a big deal to the rental service. It's not just damage that's irked GameFly, however, as the complaint also focuses on outright theft by USPS employees. The USPS has already seen the arrest of 19 employees due to hands in the cookie jar.

Since the USPS is a government entity, I'm sure not a lot will be done. That's a shame, because I'd personally like to strangle a number of wankers working there, such as the mongs who can't be bothered to walk their lazy arses to my door with important packages, or whatever idiot decided to shred my Game Informer as he stuffed it into the mailbox like he was Mike Tyson fisting Miley Cyrus.

Perhaps I just got lucky, but I'm quite happy with my local branch. Maybe it's because they were at one point (and perhaps still are) located in Mafia territory?

1% breakage is bad for the rental industry because it adds up exponentially .

I have only had the service for a few months and I have already had to file two "missing in transit" reports on Gamefly's website after they didn't receive my return. I can definitely see where they are coming form on this.

Sounds like my mail guy, I typically get my magazines a month late sometimes within a week of each other, like he was reading it and lost it behind his seat for a while or something. Anytime I have a package he pretty much throws it at me and runs away. Actually not too upset about that second part, I don't want him hanging out.

Recently just got a game from gamefly where the sides of the mailer were shredded open. Luckily the game was still inside, but it still made a loud noise when I popped it into my PSP and failed to load.
So yeah, I can see why gamefly is upset. So am I.

"Since the USPS is a government entity, I'm sure not a lot will be done."

Oh god. I read Destructoid to hear Jim Sterling's worthless opinions on politics. USPS is one of the most reliable and efficient services, either government or private, in the world. Yes, yes, I know, and bunch of stupid fucks like Mr. Sterling will cite a bunch of anecdotes here about how one letter out of the tens of thousands you've received wasn't in the best condition.

It is rich to see you call someone else lazy, you fat fuck.

Well this reminds me of how every netflix dvd I get is always open(as well as the occasional missing dvd), but it isn't necessarily the usps itself, but specific workers. They would be doing the same crap at any other job most likely.

When I lived in belgium I would get about 3/4 of my mail. And about 1/2 of that was damaged in some way.

God I hate my homeland.

If you add up how much it would cost a month just in disk replacement for a company of Gamefly's size, I've seen it cost them 250,000-300,000 a month. That is a decent amount of money, that could easily be lowered just by giving them the special waiver that they give Blockbuster and Netflix

USPS sucks major ball's I've had about 5 packages claimed as delivered on days I was home when no mail carrier ever came by. And when you file a complaint all they do is shrug it off. I wouldn't call them reliable or efficient, only cheap.

Is there not enuff packaging peanuts, foam protectors, or bubble wrap to protect the packages from damage? Do the boxes tumble around in transit in the vehicles? 1% doesn't seem that bad, but the theft does seem serious.

USPS near me is terrible. Once when I ordered something extremely fragile, I heard the doorbell ring and walked out soon enough to see the guy frisbee the package at the glass patio door. I was pissed. Every time I wait for my bi-annual check from the government I fear, fear that they will deliver it to someone else's house like they do so many other of my things. I remember the poor guy who came from Fuqua (like, 45 minutes from where I live) just to bring me a large box from Play-Asia that they dumped at his house whose address was NOTHING like mine.

Long story short, there is a reason why nobody wants to use USPS and they are losing monies: they are (mostly) idiots.

Also one of the reasons I am afraid to use Gamefly as much as I want to. USPS lost a disc in the mail and GF tried to charge my friend $100 for it.

I also love the fact that pointing out that the USPS is government is somehow a "political opinion." Government appointed staff cannot be fired without severe processes. It's very hard to get shitty government staff fired. That's not opinion, that's fact.

Protip: The word "government" does not not always mean someone is sharing a political opinion.

my dad works in the usps fixing the machines that sort the mail and all i have to say is. I'm not totally surprised that a ton of these things are getting shredded. Has anyone actually seen the machines the mail goes through? With a CD in the thin envelope that is desperately trying to keep this thing safe and the 100 miles of machinery the thing travels and how fast it goes you can see where things might go awry. My dad has told me of times where he'd just find exploded cds/dvds in machines after the envelope got trapped in a feeder belt or something.

It's too bad that Gamefly is the top dog in unlimited video game rentals. I know that it's hard when everyone wants the same games, but when I was a member I had to wait forever to get games, unless I put a bunch of crap in my queue that I didn't really want to play all that bad, but that was available. Also, the turnaround time is terrible compared to Netflix.

I'm hearing that Blockbuster is going to do video game rentals through the mail...if they don't bundle it with movie rentals (I'm not dropping Netflix) and you can return games to the store, I'll be all over it.

I had to file a couple of "Lost Item" claims when I had GameFly due to the beloved USPS. That's part of the reason I canceled my subscription. GameFly is definitely onto something here.

Here's the rundown:
To all the "I DON;T HAVE USPS PROBLEM COMPLAINERS"

Guess what? I've lived in 4 completely different areas, and in every one, the USPS has sucked hard. True, it may be perfectly fine in your particular area, but the truth is they are generally underpaid, overworked, and under qualified.

Also Yutt loves fat jokes, apparently.

Hey Jim, I've loved you for years on this site, but this post finally compelled me to comment bc I just recently started working for the USPS in mid-December. I'm in Louisiana (not far from you, Jim!) and I can't speak for everyone, I'm sure breakages happen every day, but just going through orientation and everything, they're pretty damn serious about theft and hell yeah you will definitely get fired if you are found to be stealing games, or any mail. At least where I work, we have a bin for all outgoing mail that we bring back simply marked "DVD" that we put all disc mailers in. This claim of "preferential treatment" to Netflix and Blockbuster is crazy. Anyway, the Netflix mailers seem much more prone to breakage than Gamefly's. Those cardboard shells, I mean you would have to WANT to break it while handling it to do any damage. Anyway, I just got the job and hell yeah I'm gonna walk to your door with any package that can't fit in your mailbox, and being gentle with all mail, not throwing shit around. C'mon guys, yayyy USPS!

For some reason, I find that quote hilarious.

Anyway, it's always good to see some USPS staff who aren't arseholes, and are also smart enough to realize I never said everybody in the service are stupid. I just wish you were working in Jackson so I could get my fucking mail on time.

Hey Jim, go easy on the USPS, brother. You live in Mississippi. What do you expect from those uneducated hicks?

The postal service here is great. But probably only because everyone working for them has finished high school.

Gamefly really needs to fuck off, they're getting a hell of a service (one that COMPLETELY facilitates their business) for far less than it should cost because the USPS is desperate to stay in business. The people Gamefly SHOULD be suing are the dickwads who use their service as a way to replace discs that they broke by being careless.

I don't think they get special treatment for being under the government. I've seen longer processes for employees at Walmart than government agencies. Me and my wife have held three government jobs. Just recently I've seen 6 get kicked from a government job in one week. Which is why my wife is getting her 2nd government job, taking one of those spots.

There is a process but when you really screw up you'll be out of there in a split second. That goes from Armed Forces to your local Library. Especially if your almost retired, at that point they look for a reason to get rid of you.

I agree with Gamefly here...they ended up not letting me renew my subscription (which I wasnt gonna do anyways cause I was going to college) a few years back because every half decent game I ordered never came the first time, or rarely got back to them...the USPS kept stealing them. It was stupid they had to cut me off, but I understood where they are coming from and they were very nice about it in their sendoff to me. I had hoped they had gotten this sorted out by now but apparently not it seems.

Most mail-people's are good, but as with any organization, you're going to get bad people (let's face it, being a mail-carrier or processor doesn't exactly command the finest degrees or experience - pretty much anyone can join the postal service).

And with a rental service, 1% damaged goods is a serious deal, because these companies depend on repeat customers. One percent damaged goods means that maybe 0.5% will never use your service again, which quickly adds up.

Also, Yutt, the Postal service is devoid of any "politics" - it runs the same whoever is in power. That's like saying if Jim complained about the weather in his state, he would be complaining about blue states versus red states. It doesn't make sense. The only reason why anyone would get offended by this is if they or a relative work for the Postal Service.

And remember, a Postal Service is supposed to treat mail correctly and with the UPMOST respect. Far too many posties don't seem to have enthusiasm for their job.

Oh and Peytomanning - way to go with the ad hominem attack. Brilliant, it really proves your point, whatever that point is. Remember, we can't see or know what you look like either, so we can't make insults based on your physical description. Must feel like a BRAVE, BRAVE MAN hiding behind that screen name. And before you make the same accusation at me, I'm not insulting people based on how they look like.
