Gamefly bumps up subscription prices ... no more Faberge eggs for you! photo

With the rising prices on video games and the sheer volume of worthwhile titles to play, online rental service Gamefly is a god-send, the likes of which have not been seen since Adriana Lima's emergency escape pod crash-landed on this planet. Unfortunately, when not helping rescue burning orphans and making cookies for old people, Gamefly also runs a business. That business has expenses. Thanks to the recent postage hike, those expenses have now become your expenses.

As of June 18th, all Gamefly subscription rates will be increased by an unbelievably astoundingly ridiculously whopping $1. While one dollar now may not seem so bad, think back to what you thought the first time gas was making it's way past the $2 per gallon mark. I say we rise up against the tyranny that lives in the hearts of men now before our faces are raped by throbbing purple--- you know what, on second thought just pay the extra dollar. Jesus would.

so for a .03 or .04 postage hike you pay an extra dollar?

plus i find them making cookies for the elderly irresponsible. they need a more healthy, balanced diet. as well jesus wouldn't pay the extra dollar, he could make the game appear out of thin air or turn bread into halo 3's. thats right even jesus is an Xbot.

It's not just postage costs that increase. Game prices have gone up this generation, employees need pay rises, cost of all goods have gone up. Fuel prices affect everything. 1$ is fairly reasonable.

The only thing I liked when I used to subscribe to Gamefly was that you can get a decent deal on hard-to-find used games. Turn-around time was horrible (like 2 weeks horrible) on games when I sent them back. I spent much more time without the games than I did with them. Availability of popular games was awful as well. Of course, this was over a year ago so things might've changed.

cryocide is 100% right. i quit using gamefly cause of their terrible turn around time. i live in pa, and their one distribution center in california just didnt cut it when i attempted to use their service. 20 bucks a month or whatever it was wasnt worth have a game every 2 weeks.

Just out of interest - how much is fuel in the US? In the UK we pay nearly £1 A LITRE (that's just over a quatrter of a gallon) meaning that we pay £4 (8$) a gallon!!!

You Americans don't know how good you've got it as there isn't even an online videogame rental service in Blighty!

just to let you know, they opened a dist. center in Pittsburgh.

and Axle, you could drive cross country on a tank of gas, right? Its about 3 bucks a gallon here.

It's around 3.20$ here in Florida. The thing is Axle, is that in England there is a usable mass transportation network. In the US, everything is built around the car. Many people have no choice but to pay high gas prices to get to work. It's our own fault for relying too much on oil in the past. Sucks when your fuel costs 1/4 of your income when it used to be a 10th only a few years ago.

True enough - America is so vast that it has to be arranged around the automobile - drive thru cinemas, drive in fast food, drive thru video rental, massive out-of-town shopping centres, but is it not cultural too is it true that the derogatory term for a bus/coach is 'loser cruiser'?

Nice play on words - not so sure about the connatations.

Can't say I've heard that term before actually. Although, if you ride the short bus to school then you're in for some verbal abuse.

Gas just went down to $2.85 here in flyover country (Missouri). I laugh, then I cry when I think about how much it was this time last year...

"Bussin'" at least in chicago is a derogatory "my car is in the shop" label for public transit.
(Like "You Bussin'?"
"Yeah."
"Weaksauce.")

The L is pretty comprehensive, and you can get just about everywhere in the city proper by rail and bus. However, so much stuff out in the suburbs is simply not accessibly by public trans. That and American Car culture subdues any wont for more environmental means of getting around. Why else would stupid fuckers be spending half of their annual income on a motherfucking H2 that's impossible to park and would never have more than 20# of crap and two or three people in it? Because big cars are a status symbol, and every last motherfucker with a luxury car or a full-size SUV should be drained of all usuable vital fluids and have their organs disseminated to the applicable needy parties.

And if gamefly were half as good as netflix about turnaround, I'd still be a subscriber, too.

I have Blockbuster Total Access (similar to Netflix for those unaware). While you can't get games in the mail, you do get a coupon every month for a free game rental. Also, you can trade in your mailed movies at the store for more movies, for free, so you can watch the store movies while you wait for more mail movies. Plus, the turnaround time is usually 3 days. It's pretty awesome.

And I was looking to switch to them from gameznflix. Im thinking about getting a DS, and currently can't rent them. Anyone have bad experiences with gamefly since they opened the Pittsburgh dist.? I figure I will get games quickly, since im only about 4 hours from there. Im actually closer to the MD gameznflix joint. Quite the quandry.

I'm with you mandlebaum.. i'm with Gameznflix too.. not the best selection, but damn I get my games in a day or two, not weeks (literally) For the number of games I was able to get from gamefly in a month, it would have been cheaper to rent them at the fucking blockbuster.

Holy crap!! i just checked their prices since their pittsburgh plant now serves KY, but holy crap, 30 bucks a month? Gameznflix is 17 for three games.

Yikes.

To Cyrocide:
Nothing's changed. I've had subscriptions from all the major game rental firms and they're all garbage. Gamefly happenes to be one of the worst. First off, they have ONE shipping center and it's in San Jose or something. So if you live on the east coast prepare to wait eleventy-five days to get a new game shipped when you return one. Second, like all game rental companies, you will never ever be able to procure a marquee new title within the first few months of release. Obviously they can't make money if they're buying one new copy for every queue spot-- seeing as everyone's only paying about half the cost of one new game every month.

i agree with theStripe, chicago=hell to own a car. the first time i drove down town i was so on edge it was far from funny. and it's hella cheaper. i've seen quite a few of the segway's around too.

ULTAMIT WINNAR, did you just not read the posts above your own? It was mentioned many times that there is another shipping center now in PA.

The postage increases $0.02 and I get a $1.00 subscription bump? That means that they expect me to rent 25 games per month on 1 game a month subscription plan? Screw that. It takes 8 days to get a new game from them. I canceled my plan as soon as I got the e-mail from gayfly.

Eternal, did you not read the post that states they AREN'T shipping to the east coast from that location? Irregardless, they still have only TWO shipping centers; the average for just about every other rental firm is 5 or 6.

The postage rate increase was 2 cents for the likes of you and I but up to 40% higher than that on flat rate mail, i.e., what your games and videos are sent with. A 40% increase in operating costs is huge. Don't be surprised if you see this happening with other services that rely on flat rate direct mail in the coming days. I just read that Gameznflix dropped the PSP category from its selection as a result of the postage rate hike and their selection lacking as it is. It will be interesting to see how the various services respond. All in all a $1 isn't that over the top.

On the upside, Gamefly is offering a 20% discount on their 2-game plan if you prepay for it before the 18th of June and/or when the price increase goes into effect. You can either go for the 3, 6 or 12 month plan. Here's the link. The yearly subscription is pretty hard to beat at $18.33 mo.
