If it's another Dave Halverson mag, no thanks. It's cool that they get excited about games, but it's too much. Every game is described like its the end-all be-all of human creation. They need to learn how to look at things with a critical eye & stop hyping the crap out of everything.
For all you young'uns, Diehard Gamefan was the shit back in the day.
Pages upon pages of high-quality glossy pics. This was pre-internet, so it was a big deal back then.

At least someone let me know why I never received any issues in the mail. After a few years they finally added Canada as a selectable country and when I actually have a chance to order, they go belly up? There's no way I'm getting my money back from this (or even a single magazine).
If it gives S&P2 the honest time of day, I have no choice but to check it out. I'm kinda sick of Nintendo Power's hype for every single Wii exclusive, and Game Informer's worship of "AAA" shooters.
love the original gamefan, have most of the issues, but everything halverson has done after kinda sucks. play was "okay" though every game got rave reviews regardless of whether the game was good or not. they just looked for someone who liked a game to do the review, i guess. the new gamefan looks pretty weak, particularly with the half and half "moviefan" thing happening. don't like that oversized style, either.
Play was pretty much exactly the same as the original DieHard, just with a nicer layout. Both over-hyped everything under the sun.
I have bad memories about PLAY's "reviews" for games like Sonic 2006 and Golden Axe: Beast Rider. I know that they we're clearly biased. I hope GameFan doesn't fall into that same pitfall.
I got a free subscription to PlayStation the official magazine or whatever it's called when I signed up for a GameStop EDGE card a long time ago and I'm still getting them. I've never paid for them, but I think somebody renewed my subscription as a gift at some point. I'd really rather do without magazines these days. Everything is easily available online; I'd rather not waste the paper and then have stacks of said wasted paper laying about my house waiting for me to donate them to Half Price Books.
I still like to read a magazine now and again, I get Modern Drummer in physical form still as it's a great resource for teaching drum lessons, but as far as popular music mags or video game mags or news mags I get all my info from them there intertubes and that's fine by me.
Books are a different story though, I like to hold my books and turn my pages dammit.

Pretty lame that they stole the name gamefan. Gamefan was an awesome mag comparable to egm, but people had gaming mag bias back then much as people have site bias now.

Wasn't GameFan what Play was before going back to GameFan? Pretty sure Halverson led up all of them.

Obviously no one ever got their money back and they used it to launch this new mag so they're never seeing another dollar from me.
On top of that the people I liked best in the mag like Nick des Barres left and Dave who is EIC also writes most of the reviews in the new mag, which I would argue is a big no-no.

Huh, I was wondering what happened to my Play magazine subscription. Don't think I'll be picking this up. Play was ok but I would get annoyed with the reviews for some reason. Think it was because I disagreed with a lot of them. /shrug Maybe that's a reason to keep reading. /doubleshrug
Quality? Play was big and awesome and beautiful, though there were definitely some times where I felt like the magazine didn't actually have an editor. The writing is kind of their weak link. Still Play, erm, now GameFan, is one of the few gaming magazines with a real voice and style. I'd say pick up at least one issue to see if you like it.
The SMG2 review has the phrase "Say what you will about Nintendo" twice within a few paragraphs. It's like they wanted to be really sure that scoring a Wii game a 10 wasn't going to ruin their street cred or something.
That sounds really cool. I usually don't like reading mags, but I understand the need to keep the written word alive. I'll look for it around here.
This was one of my first game magazines, this reincarnation seems very promising. I'm quite the happy bunny
that's pretty cool that a big company like Destructoid would help promote a smaller startup magazine like Game Fan.
While I enjoyed seeing titles on the cover that I wouldn't have even thought of looking for, the loose talk of Halverson having essentially taken employees and subscribers money and ran off to make another magazine, doesn't sit well with me.

My brother has some original Gamefan magazines that I read through about a year ago. Holy crap, it was literally like the internet with pages of just screenshots and the writers laying out their opinions, like actually cared about games instead of being professional.
Will I start giving this a read? No, it's Gamefan by name alone and i doubt they'll recreate the same feeling the original had.

Nope. While I have fond memories of Gamefan, Gamers Republic, and Play. Although they overrated every game they reviewed. I don't trust Dave and his shifty business tactics. Most of my favorite Play writers moved on and I will follow them there. Maybe then they will finally get paid for their work.
I still have to say though that Game Players was the best video game magazine ever. EVER. Then again, that was 15 years ago haha We'll see how this mag is if I can even find it.
