Yes, Doug Lowenstein has done many a cool thing for the game industry over the years. But Game Industry person of the year? In the bizarro world maybe! Back on earth, the much loved former ESA leader actually let our much loved E3 collapse into a private cocktail party and then quit the organization months later without a successor lined up, weakening the ESA that's now scouring the world for another suit while he settles into his new job. Way to lead the pack! He then says he's quitting because he's 55. Ok guy, whatever. My dad's 55 too and he's gonna be working a shit land surveyor job for another 10 years and earning about $620,000 less annually, so it's hard to pity him. Furthermore, if I see anyone from AOL/GameDaily at CES without a tie I'm calling their moms.
That said, I would have no qualms giving Dougy a lifetime achievement award, but he'd be the last person on my list for person of the year in 2006. Who better deserves it? The Warcraft guy (their #3). Peter Moore for making the 360 an incredible success against all hater odds (he got robbed). Miyamoto for believing a motion controller could redefine the industry (their #2). CliffyB for breathing life into the shooter genre (their #4). Olivia Munn for having incredible cheekbones (she got robbed). Just not the quitting dude. Who would you pick?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
