My favorite character's Midna. Something makes her different of all the previous partners.
My least favorite character...do I really have to say? Navi. Hey! Listen!
My favorite item is the Bow and Arrow. I love just going to Hyrule Field and shooting creatures with it. (In the 3D Zeldas).
LOL next week Half-Life is so going to pown Halo
and what about Offical mods you can get from steam?
There are some moments in Final Fantasy games that come close, but the original NES Legend of Zelda is still one of the best games ever. Right after Wind Waker.
I'm too lazy to do the bonus questions...
Being a huge Zelda fanboy its pretty obvious who my vote is going for.
BQ1. I would love to see more story into the origins of the master sword and maybe some sort of storyline that ties into the WW-MM time split.
BQ2. Minda was one of my favorite characters, she was the most developed of the sidekicks and she was a badass lol. Also any guy that plays the song of storms on a music box in the series.
BQ3. The postman in TP. He acts like he has mental problems.
BQ4. The bow and arrow.. one of the greatest power ups of all time. Though the spinner and ball and chain where great addons to the series.
BQ5. The boomerang in TP, it just didn't feel as damaging from WW and OOT boomerangs
BQ6. All of MM was kinda scary and it was the first Zelda were your so unappreciated for what you do. Other than that alot of the TP scenes especially the part with Minda's lament.
BQ7. Hyrule overworld, Minda's Lament, Song of storms, Village of the blue maiden, Lon Lon ranch and the Giants song in MM (Cant remember the name)
BQ8. Every Zora's domain/Lake Hylia
BQ9. Absolutely nothing. They're doing a pretty god job so far.
BQ1. Final Fantasy: No more androgyny... please. It's hard to relate to a character if your not entirely sure of their gender.
Zelda:Zelda FPS. kidding. I'm hoping that they make it a bit more open-world, a little less linear.
BQ2. FF: Vivi. When the game was released (and I was 10,) I felt that he was someone I could relate to: Shy and out-of-place.
Zelda: ......Link
BQ3. FF: Oh holy shit Vaan.
Zelda: Navi. "Hey! Hey! Listen! Hey! Look out!"
BQ4. FF: Cid's mop-spear.
Zelda: Link's mace in Twilight Princess.
BQ5. Who cares.
BQ6. FF: Tidus disapears. Aw.
Zelda: Ganondorf battle in Twilight Princess... dissapointment....
BQ7. Which series had better music? Which songs stand out the most to you?
FF: Hands down, best music in history.
Zelda: Good stuff. I've always liked playing the ocarina songs on piano.
Ehh. I don't feel like typing more.
1. Less girly men, return of Uematsu. Remake of Final Fantasy VI/VII.
2. Shadow from Final Fantasy 6 (hence Shadow + III). 6 is my favorite game, and Shadow is just straight up badass.
3. Everybody in Final Fantasy VIII except Zell. And maybe Irvine.
4. Item? What? Maybe Magicite?
5. Um...no idea.
6. Actually didn't fret much over Aeris' death. When I found out Arron was a ghost thing, that blew my mind (too much rest of the game sucked). End of Final Fantasy 9 was pretty dang emotional, as was the end of 6.
7. Final Fantasy 6 has the best video game soundtrack of all time.
8. The Magitech factory in FF6 has amazing music, and is generally a cool dungeon.
9. Less "zomg serious girly men" and stuck with fantasy and swords instead of guns and steampunk all over the place.
So Zelda.
Don't get me wrong, I love Final Fantasy to death, but melodramatic teen squads are sometimes too difficult to take seriously, and the series is more hit or miss than Zelda. In fact, I'll always think of FF8 as being the turd filling of the other two PSX masterpieces that sandwich it.
Final Fantasy games are top class, but Zelda games are the masters of the craft.
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded! I want to see the next Zelda revolutionize swordplay with the 1:1. If anyone can do it and redeem the wii, they can. I also like the darker direction the series has taken since Majora. I would also like to see options for difficulty, because there are rarely challenging fights.
BQ2. Who was your favorite character(s) in each series? Why? I loved Midna. From the beginning, she captured my attention with cute and clever dialogue presentation. If not her, then Dampe the gravekeeper for his touching attitude after death. Or, as a bonus, the mailman from Twilight princess. No explanation necessary.
BQ3. Who was your least favorite character(s) in each series. Why? Tough question. I suppose it would be the Deku Tree for being so long winded. He has a killer mustache though.
BQ4. What was your favorite item(s) in each series? Why? The masks in Majora's Mask: Some hated this, but I loved the ability to change form and still be Link. Gotta love being a Zora.
BQ5. What was your least favorite item(s) in each series? Why? Iron boots, as switching them on and off became a pain.
BQ6. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most? I have two: The scene where the song of healing heals the mummy in Ikana canyon, and the scene where you must carry a dying Midna across a storming Hyrule field. Just thinking about it chokes me up!
BQ7. Which series had better music? Which songs stand out the most to you? Wind Waker and Twilight Princess fight for this. Seriously, riding on Epona in Twilight Princess is tops.
BQ8. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why? Stone Temple Tower, hands down. Towards the end when you've flipped the dungeon and you're looking straight down at a starry sky is incredible.
BQ9. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently? That's a hard question because real complaints are far and few inbetween. I would work on a better solution to endless inventory swapping.
1) I would love to see Nintendo tackle an MMO Zelda. The idea of exploring a huge version of Hyrule, or the Great Sea, would be a mouthwatering prospect.
The two games butting heads are obviously A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy VII. Both incredibly amazing and well-crafted games... but I have to choose Zelda. The Zelda series has never given me a shitty game to play. Despite the lack of cohesive and continuity of a storyline (according to Miyamoto at least), the world is just so full of life and greatness. Not only that, but I have such great memories attached to the series, mostly childhood ones where it was also a way I got to share experiences with my older brother. Every single Zelda game has just been either a well-made game or simply fun and enjoyable.
While I do not have any hate for the Final Fantasy series, there were a few games that just made me sick. Final Fantasy VIII is the prime suspect. Horrible story, horrible characters, horrible gameplay. Easily the worst FF game ever made. Nearly every element of the game was ripped straight from FFVII, twisted, contorted and bastardized into just a terrible game. I hated it so much when I got it, at quite a cheap price at the time somehow (can't remember how I acquired it, but it was for the PC), that I decided to break all the discs and burn the cardboard casings. I remember it was a big gawdy envelope/sleeve thing. Anyway, it's the early morning and I honestly can't go into any more detail. Plus, there's a good chance no one will read this anyway. Some of you guys have made better arguments already.
BQ1: A new game based on the Link from Ocarina and Majora's Mask. I loved that continuation (somewhat, I don't know exactly how it fits but in my head it just does somehow) and I prefer young non-cartoony Link any day. Give me more of that shit.
BQ2. The Zoras from Ocarina/Majora's Mask and Cait Sith from FFIX.
I liked the Zora communities. Very hippy-like.
"Kett Shee" is so underappreciated.
BQ3. Zelda: Tingle. I don't have to explain why.
FF: Zell fro VIII. I hope he chokes on a fucking hotdog.
BQ4. Fairies in Zelda, Phoenix Downs in FF. Who doesn't appreciate pick-me-ups and revives?
BQ5. There's not an item I don't like in Zelda. I also don't play enough FF games to hate an item in that series either.
BQ7. OCARINA. Just... do I really have to explain the AMAZING?!?!!
BQ9. I would have made a storyline, or at least a chronology for the Zelda series. And I would not have made Final Fantasy VIII. Well, I would have made it, but it would be NOTHING like what it is- a blatant rip-off.
BQ6: The ending to FFX with Tidus was very touching. Also, I wanted to name my children after Cecil and Rosa in FFIV--I guess that deserves mention.
BQ7: Final Fantasy. The Zelda theme is great, but it can't hold a candle to the music from FFIV, FFVI, and FFVII (especially FFVI).
I can still play the zelda games today, and they all basically hold up. All of the final fantasy games have aged really poorly in my opinion.
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!
Since I voted for Zelda, I'm hoping the future of the series continues doing what it already does: making each game feature new primary mechanics that are fun and exciting. Imagine a Zelda game that makes use of shadows like that new Wii game Shadow Walker - maybe something to do with Shadow Link?
BQ2. Who was your favorite character(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: My favorite character was the Happy Mask Salesman from Majora's Mask. His true identity is shrouded in mystery, and some have alluded that he was Majora made-human. Being able to draw your own conclusions made it all the more fun.
Final Fantasy: My favorite character would have to be Auron from Final Fantasy X. His personality and character pushed so much of that game forward due to him seemingly already knowing everything about the events occurring.
BQ3. Who was your least favorite character(s) in each series. Why?
Zelda: Tingle because he was a joke, but an annoying joke.
Final Fantasy: Vaan from Final Fantasy XII because by the end of the game it still felt like his character didn't evolve, and he really accomplished nothing.
BQ4. What was your favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: The Fierce Diety Mask from Majora's Mask was my favorite because it opened up the player to seeing a side of Link we've never seen. Also, because he's only seen in boss fights, he's still shrouded in mystery to what nature of Link he represented, or where the spirit of the mask came from.
Final Fantasy: I would say any item that allowed for summoning a creature. In my opinion, the summons have long been the story backbone to Final Fantasy for ages.
BQ5. What was your least favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: Lens of Truth just felt like it wasn't implemented properly and could have been better integrated for use in the game.
Final Fantasy: Anything related to combining items and alchemy. In general it's never felt like the series has given that ability much credit or time on design to make it worthwhile.
BQ6. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
Zelda: Surprisingly, the end of Twilight Princess when Link has to let go of Midna so she can go back to her world. That scene really let you see emotions from Link that showed how much he's grown through the adventure.
Final Fantasy: At the end of Final Fantasy VIII when Squall is walking through that barren world. There is so much said in the environment and thematic of those scenes to what he's going through and what his soul needs to do in order to return home.
BQ7. Which series had better music? Which songs stand out the most to you?
Zelda had better music in my opinion overall. Particularly Ocarina of Time. However, Final Fantasy X, VIII, and IX along had better music than the other Zelda games.
BQ8. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
Zelda: Every area in the world of Wind Waker.
Final Fantasy: Like I'd said above, that barren scene near the end of Final Fantasy VIII with Squall.
BQ9. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
Zelda: I would have likely found more places to hide details and backstory of other characters and worlds that have been shown throughout the series. However, I wonder if that would be a good choice or not.
Final Fantasy: I would have probably had a game more about the summons themselves and a story of antagonism between them and humans. This particular game would likely use similar mechanics to Final Fantasy X.
In the end I think Final Fantasy is my favorite since those games seem to stick with me more. My thoughts constantly go back to all the amazing locales, characters, musical scores and plot events and made me wish I was digital so I could import myself into those universes.
BQ1.
Um, FF7 remake with either FF12 or FF13 battle system. Or maybe a co-op feature (I know crystal chronicles did it but I want something more story based like the main games but set up for two or three lead characters- also dont require every player to own a gameboy and link cable!)
And from Zelda I'd like to see Zelda play a bigger role in the stories beside being kidnapped.
BQ2.
FF - Edgar or Squall. Edgar was the most interesting protagonist from 6 I thought and he had a fuckin castle that could travel under sand! Also Squall had a lot of interesting things going on in the ol noggin that become apparent only after multiple playthroughs and plot analysis'. But then there's Reno- he was cool, or FF7 Cid, or Seifer, or Auron, or that hot bunny chick Fran, or the spunky/ sexy Rikku or what about Cecil and Kain...
Zelda - um, Link?
BQ3.
FF - Quina, is there any real debate here?
Zelda - Tingle, is there any real debate here?
BQ4.
FF - Master Knights of the Round materia! I also liked a bunch of Edgars tools.
Zelda - Biggoron sword or Mirror Shield. Using the mirror shield for the first time was beyond cool. The hookshot was sweet as well- especially when the series jumped into 3D. Also the Fierce Diety mask was badass but you could only use it on bosses =(
BQ5.
FF - Ninja Sutra - whats the point of ninja porn you cant even look at?
Zelda - Bombchus always seemed incredible cumbersome to use and I never used them except when the game forced you to solve a puzzle.
BQ6. SPOILERS - FFX and OoT
FF - Probably the end of FFX when Yuna runs at Tidus and falls through him because he doesn't exist anymore, that got me.
Zelda - The end of OoT, the whole thing. Just how he parts with Navi, goes back in time to get his 7 years back, and approaches Zelda now as a child after going through all these ordeals with her in the future... and then it freezes and goes to black and white. It was just so incredible.
BQ7. Final Fantasy had better music, no competition. If I had to pick a good piece at random- Dancing Mad from FF6 or The Landing from FF8 come to mind, but 6, 7 and 8 have (with a few exception) some of the best soundtracks in videogames.
BQ8.
FF - Midgar was just so cool. It was the first video game environment I experienced that was so detailed and beautiful in a grungy, steampunkish way and so absolutely full of life and character and history.
Zelda - I quite liked the sunken Castle in Wind Waker, and also Ganons Tower from OoT. Running out of that things while it collapsed was awesome.
BQ9.
FF - I don't know, maybe integrate a co-op feature into the narrative sort of the way gears of war does (but make it an RPG)
Zelda - probably the same thing, with Zelda as the second character.
With Final Fantasy, I enjoyed most of the games at some point, but I can not bring myself to play through them more than once. Most of it is just the time commitment that i know any of those games bring. Also the grinding is just something that I have absolutely no desire ever do again. The stories are usually great, but the slow aspect of the gameplay just don’t allow me to dive back in.
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!
Changes. I know there is a set formula but Twilight Princess seemed dull to me, like I had played it a thousand times before, only I was bored with it this time.
BQ3. Who was your least favorite character(s) in each series. Why?
Zelda: Sheik. Girls pretending to be boys never works out well.
FF: Aerith, he is such a bitch. I don’t want to watch or listen to some emo kid complain that life isn’t fair, even if they have a big sword.
BQ4. What was your favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda : Boomerang in Zelda
FF: Any health potion while using it to kill the undead
BQ5. What was your least favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: Blue Candle. Burn bush, leave screen, burn bush, leave screen, burn bush…
BQ6. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
The world ending in Majoas Mask. It felt like everything I had done was completely and utterly pointless.
BQ7. Which series had better music? Which songs stand out the most to you?
Music is both is epic, Zelda is more memorable but FF would sound better with an orchestra playing it.
BQ8. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
Not sure about the best, but by far the worst in either series was playing through the dungeon in phantom hourglass again and again while only making minor headway, only to do it all over again. Horrible horrible game design.
I am going to be soooo flamed for this.
Both are over-rated these days, but Zelda just did more gaming in general.
I only like a little less than half the Final Fantasy games, but that's better than the Zelda series never being above mediocre.
BQ1: FF13 seems like it could very well be the best RPG of this decade (2010 counts right? whatever it comes out in 2009 for japan so it counts), that's probably me just hyping it up but it does look increadibly awesome.
BQ2: Kefka since he's my favorite villain of all time, and I don't have a favorite Zelda character since they tend to not have personalities, and those that do have personalities like Navi are just really god damn annoying.
BQ3: Tidus, he completely ruined FF10 for me, and Link for zelda but mostly because it pisses me off that people consider a characterless silent hero who has had character development or even more than one dimension to him the best character of all time.
BQ6: It's almost all nostalgia now but the Opera scene in FF6 is by a mile or so my favorite scene in all of video games.
BQ7: Final Fantasy, I respect if people like Zelda games more, but if you say that it has better music then you really just don't know what you're talking about.
BQ9: Made more than half of the FF games good, let me explore more of Golden Saucer in FF7, and give people personalities in zelda
Bonus Questions:
1) 2 words. Voice. Acting.
2) Ganondorf from TP, because he turns into a giant pig and teleports.
3) ummmm, the chickens?
4) Spinner, because of that one part of the map that you can bounce back and forth between walls and kills those lizard things (forget the name):o
5) Slingshot, didn't use it once after the boomerang
6) Not really emotional, but after I beat that maze/obstacle course in MM after the first temple I got really, really elated.
7) Zelda, always have a Zelda tune in my head. Windmill hut, please make remix for next game nintendo!
8) Snowpeak. BEST. DUNGEON. EVER.
9) Make me care for the characters more, I really only care about Link and every one else I could really care less about.
I'll respond to the Qs later.
BQ1: I'm hoping FF XIV is fun. We don't know much about it, but a lot has changed since FF XI came out (mainly, WoW happened). I hope they find a way for more casual players to have fun.
BQ2: My favorite so far is Yuna. She had a lot responsibility to bear, destroyed a lot of cultural beliefs ( in the culture of the game) and generally held her head high through a lot of adversity. FF X-2 can be forgotten, but FFX on its own is one of my favorite games of all time.
BQ3: I was never a big fan of Cait Sith. Isn't that the default crappy character?
Gotta go for now, may finish later.
So, vote --> ZELDA.
FF6 has the best story and villain of all: Kefka. He succeded where ALL other FF evil characters failed. He managed to destroy the WORLD. I liked Sephiroth too, but man, fanboys just ruined him for me. In retrospect he's just a momma's boy.
Cloud was an emptier shell than Link, neither of them speak, but Link has a better attitude. At least Link didn't mope around like a wuss (if you find this offensive, then you belong to the category of people that ruined Cloud and Sephiroth for me).
Zelda, on the other hand, has consistently been good. I always have a good time playing and solving the puzzles in the dungeons. LttP and OoT are among my favorite games of all time. Basically, what it came down to was good to bad ratios. :p
BQ's:
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for?
(I'm gonna do both, not just Zelda)
FF: I want my turn-based fights back, materia was cool too. A change in setting would be nice, too. How about a space-era steampunk? Also, bring moogles back!
Zelda: What they did with windwaker was good. So now what I want to see is something in the other direction. Drop the cartoony style and give me some HD Link and Ganon. Or keep the style but give us some completely new setting, like something out of a Miyazaki movie.
BQ2. Who was your favorite character(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: Goron king-dude. Specially the one from OoT. That dude loved to dance. Twitchy mailman guy, Epona.
FF: Shadow (FF6) and Mog. Shadow was just a cool mofo and Mog, well Mog is a moogle, he was just rad. Oh, and Cid cause he's in all of them.
BQ3. Who was your least favorite character(s) in each series. Why?
Easy.
FF: Yuffie and Tidus. Yuffie because she's a materia-stealing whore who isn't very useful, and Tidus....well I just didn't like his face. That's reason enough, right?
BQ4. What was your favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
Zelda: I think most here agree that the Grappling hook (hookshot) is the coolest.
FF: Megaelixirs. It's awesome when you remember during that last boss fight, and oh so sweet when you get to use them!
BQ5. What was your least favorite item(s) in each series? Why?
FF: cant think of one.
Zelda: Deku sticks and seeds.
BQ6. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
FF: Opera, Celes near suicide, World ending in FFVI. Also, in FFVII when they show REDXIII's dad all turned into a statue, and the part where the highwind transforms and you escape.
Zelda: Anytime you open a treasure chest, or beat a dungeon....those sound effects work like a Pavlovian bell to me. Or getting the Goron Sword that doesn't brake after doing all those crazy quests.
BQ7. Which series had better music? Which songs stand out the most to you?
Can't decide, they're all awesome. Zelda music is so good you can recognize it just by hearing a couple of seconds of it, and the soundtracks to any FF are amazing as well (Nobuo Uematsu is awesome).
BQ8. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
Zelda: Desert, forest levels and sailing in Windwaker.
FF: Golden Saucer in FFVII. And anytime you get access to an airship.
BQ9. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
Zelda: change up the story a bit more. I know it's part of the appeal, but c'mon, it's been pretty much the same since the late 80s. Too much fantasy setting, how about something a bit different?
FF: Emo-androgynous characters are lame. I don't know what happened, but even my japanese mother-in-law agrees that japan's youth has undergone a sort of pussification (as in, even the men strive to look like girls), and I am of the idea that Final Fantasy is part of the problem.
Phew, I'm done.
