I'm going to have to pick #1, it packs a nostalgic punch for me. It features a beautiful intro movie and the solemn soundtrack gives the game a sad yet endearing atmosphere. I have yet to play Alter Code F but the original will always be a classic for me.
People always complain about the horrible translation, but I never thought it was that bad. It's certainly not the best ever, but it never interfered with my enjoyment, and I've seen much worse.
Also, the music throughout the whole damn thing. I still whistle the world map music...
Overall one of the best RPGs I've ever played.
I love the whole series, but I just want to see 5 get at least ONE vote... from the one person that even played it...
I played the series late so I only played the remake of the original Wild Arms and 3-4-5.
While the original is quite fun, Wild Arms 3 had a certain charm the others didn't. Maybe it's the cel-shaded graphics or the western stuff connecting more with me than the others, but I liked that one much more than the others.
But... I have to give props to Wild Arms 2. It's the one that sucked me in the most of the bunch, and I absolutely adore it. Plus for a protagonist named Ashley, he's pretty damn manly.
It was ridiculously tough and a bit of a grind, but at the same time, it was good looking for a low budget game and it try to be anything other than a "classic" and episodic JRPG. Also, I liked the fact that it ended with the heroes becoming fugitives in a world they saved.
I'd say the first one comes a close second though. It was a pretty dark game at times and I was going through a bit of a thing with Stephen King's The Dark Tower (plus it had that cool robot twist), but I think it just loses out on my vote because it becomes a bit directionless halfway through and I think it didn't explain things to you well half the time (bad translation, I think).
I don't think much of the series after WA3 anyway. Nice combat system, but I think it moved into weird sci-fi territory for me and the original themes were sort of lost along the way.
Plus, I don't think anybody who's played the first game will feel anything but pity for Jack meeting Lady Harken and realizing who she was, or forget Rudy cutting off his own damned arm to beat Zeikfried, or any of the other emotional moments in the game.
And the soundtrack has been on my ipod for years.
