And my reasoning behind why 2 is better (IMO) is that I'm not a fan of time limits (or dungeon limits, in 1's case), and even though I think the first game had a much better story line, I enjoyed the combat of the second more.
And CotP is sitting on my to-do list pile o' games so I can't comment on that. :)
Valkyrie Profile 2 was a bloomlit nightmare of convoluted, endless number crunching and anime eyes. The first one stayed a little more focused, and had smooth-animating sprites to boot.
In fact, it is the second best PS RPG, only behind Suikoden II
And I guess Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Ultima VII Part Two: The Serpent's Isle counted as one game.
Has the Mana/Seiken Densetsu series been done yet? Could have missed it.
Spoilers I guess:

@JQM78 - That's Valkyria Chronicles, NOT Valkyire Profile. Completely different and completely unrelated games.
Am I the only person who voted for this? :(
Still, it was my least favorite of the 3.
Valkyrie Profile and Chronicles games are not related, which is why the TWO Chronicles games will faceoff next week. Separate from this week. But they may be in the same brackets in the tournament, just for shits and giggles. Although, probably not, since people have a huge hardon for Chronicles and, as some have already said here in the comments, Profile is many peoples' favorite RPG of all time. So I will probably make the brackets balanced in the same manner the March Madness ones are, with rankings spread out.
I thought the game was fun as hell, not to mention the fact that Tri Ace didn't just do a lazy set of difficulty settings like they did for their other games (ie harder difficulty just means more stats), but instead made it actually feel more rewarding for me to play Hard Mode than it was to play normal or easy. Not to mention the differing scenarios between modes as well (not a ton, but enough for me).
Also, probably one of the better soundtracked games I ever played--not only was the music great, but the VA was fabulous. If you don't believe me, Lezard is practiacally perfect in VP 1 (nothing is quite as awesome as him spouting "Thou must desire respite from thy empty existence" right before raining total annihilation onto whatever he's facing :) ).
Also, pedophile jokes FTW.
And thus, shortly after VP1: Tri-Ace began their downward spiral of suckage.
It's hard to find japanese game with adult oriented themes and character designs and this one not only features them but does it in a way that few other games do, japanese and western.
The script was superb, the dialogues and themes of the stories feel like a step above of what you usually find in JRPGs. I loved the stories of the Einherjar and how Lenneth came across them. They were often moving, dramatic and had philosophical undertones that left you thinking about them after you put down the controller, more suited for a mature audience, something which I appreciate, they were further embellished by the awesome soundtrack and voice acting. They managed to get you to care for the long cast of characters, if only for one chapter.
Just check Arngrim and Jelanda's long intro if you doubt these statements(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbnckfMSKwk --part one), there were about 30 minutes of story (not even counting the prologue!) before you could really start the game. I know people usually complain about cutscenes, but when they are this good and serve the purpose of contextualizing the characters and action and draw you closer to them so well, I personally don't mind them at all.
The beautiful character and stage artwork coupled with the catchy music and simple battle system made for an entertaining and addictive experience. I still remember many of the characters' phrases shouted before combat. It's one of the few games I've played twice, once on normal where I got the bad ending and on hard for the good one.
It's among my favorite JRPGs, if not the one.
I did play VP2, I really liked the graphics and maybe even the changes to the battle and skill systems. I tried it for a while but sadly realized it lacked what I liked most in the first one; good characterization, great script and mature themes.
Wasn't feeling the story at all, it just paled in comparison to the first one, felt cheesy at times and I couldn't care about the characters, I don't know maybe it was the voice acting or its english direction...
I heard there were plans for VP3 but I doubt they can manage to pull another gem like VP1. I don't know how well the first VP was received in japan, or if people here and over there value the same traits I find best about VP1, but IMO, the people that developed VP2 weren't really aware of what VP1 such a good game and just saw love for a franchise and an opportunity to make cash.
The battle system was incredibly deep, the graphics and music were excellent (one of my favorite all time game soundtracks actually), and its confusing as hell- definitely a game only for the hard-core.
VP2 was excellent as well- amazing soundtrack and its one of THE BEST looking PS2 games but for some reason I just like playing VP1 a little bit more.
DS one I never played but heard mostly bad things.
As for valkyria chronicles, why even bother? It'll be a whitewash in favour of the first game. It's not a battle, it's a massacre!
I guess I remember VP1 because it was an RPG that was very original and ahead of its time. First of all it was one of the first RPG that had decent English voice acting. The english cast of Pokemon did alot of voices for the game, so some of the characters sound like Brock and Ash.
VP1 was one of the first JRPG I played that did away with random battles as you are allowed to freeze them and bypass them. In addition to bypassing bad guys, the game had awesome puzzles and platforming segments as the crystals can be shot to create a platform, or let it burst to create a little boost.
VP1 also allowed some greater degree of freedom, as you dont need to view the tale of every Einherjar, and different difficulties even offered different endings.
Couple months ago I went to the comic book store and saw a Trading Arts figure of Freya. Bought it immediatly for $8.
So yeah, Valkyrie Profile 1 for sure. It may be story-heavy to start with, but dammit, it's worth it and it's very unusual territory for a JRPG! The platforming / rpg / time management bits are all wonderfully deep too.
