VC2 was good and all, but for a PSP game, against the original it simply doesn't compare. I'd also say that the original probably had my favorite graphics in any game ever due to the style, VC2 was just so... unimpressive by comparison, not by its own fault, but oh well. The gameplay was just so fantastic in the original, and it's still pretty damn good in 2, but the power of the platforms just makes too big of a difference for me, it just didn't feel nearly as good. So it basically comes down to the fact that VC2 is on the PSP, and VC is on the PS3, which is sad but true.
Also I <3 Isara
While Valkyria Chronicles 1 had a better visual presentation (obviously), better characters, and a better story line, VC2 has improved upon the gameplay mechanics in almost every way. More customizable options like the weapon and armor coatings and different tanks, and all the different classes.
This is a super tough call for me, but I'm going to have to go with the first one due to its beautiful presentation and story. Although from the way things are already looking with VC3, that may take the cake.
Besides superior control thanks to the PS3's superior analog stick, the game had more charm and personality. I loved most of the cast and really enjoyed seeing the Skies of Arcadia characters. Wendy is one of the greatest video game characters ever. The majority of the cast in VC2 are dicks. The flow of the first game is vastly better than the second. I hate all of the stupid little high school cut scenes required to advance the game.
The original Valkyria Chronicles is extremely revolutionary. It's so good that I have no desire to play other SRPGs anymore. It's the Chrono Trigger of that genre. I've played VC through 3 times already and it never gets old.
i'm a little disappointed that the 3rd is on the psp but i'm pleased with the direction sega seems to be going with the darker theme set during the same war. definitely looking forward to seeing my old foes from the first game especially selvaria who doesn't love her or hate her depending how many times she wiped your entire army.
While VC2 improved the gameplay leaps and bounds from an already impressive and fun system, I just never felt that it was really utilized, largely due to the limited sections of the map. The story I actually have no complaints about, it helped that I got to see the characters just being themselves every once in a while.
The thing is, the first one was just so incomparably good, it leaves the 2nd one in the dust completely.
Here's hoping that VC3 ends up being the perfect hybrid of the two!
On my first playthrough I forgot to save and was set back by about 4 chapters and I was glad the whole thing would last longer. It’s gameplay, story and presentation are all brilliant and different from anything else out there, and you will eventually find yourself caring about the characters and even the individual troops.
Except Kreis.
Nobody gives a shit about Kreis.
Because of this level of character development, I felt mor of an impact when someone in Class G went down in combat than in VC1. It's close, though, so very VERY close. Like 1 millimeter.
VC1
While never having a chance to play VC2 yet, VC1 was one of the driving forces behind my PS3 purchase.
That and it was so visually incredible, the gameplay (even from the demo) was fun for me, and the cutscenes in 1 showed off the CANVAS engine quite well, which I heartell is not the case in 2's anime cutscenes.
So in summary, VC1 is definitely the better game in the series. It had a better story, better aesthetics, better audio, and with the exception of sub-classes and character missions, better gameplay too.
VC3 is going to have to work really hard to make up for VC2.
The first for the same reason jboking stated. The demo showed up on PSN one day and I downloaded it, not expecting much, and was sold on it by the time I finished it. Not too many game demos have done that lately. :)
Second..well I can't really say anything there that hasn't already been said. My reasons are the same as just about everybody else in that the game mechanics are refined a bit in the second, which is wonderful, but the story and characters are lacking in quality from the first.
Third, and I know a lot of people agree, and disagree, but it's on the PSP instead of the PS3. I know it shouldn't matter that much, but it does (to me anyways).
So the second is awesome, but not as awesome as the first.
It's all in good fun. There doesn't need to be a point. :)
Do you like the first or the second better? And why?

As good as VC2 is, everything about it feels less than the original. Bits being cut, maps being smaller, etc.
The fact that VC2 still gets a good amount of praise is a testament to just how great the first one was and why fans want a sequel on a home console and not a portable.
Still, I have to give this to Valkyria Chronicles 2. In the first game, your units were sort of just... there. I mean, yeah, each of them had individual personalities and shit, but that was only conveyed through little blurbs about them in their dossiers, and it wasn't worth the trouble of using every single unit just to see that. The main cast had enough diversity in their ranks that you really only needed a few secondary squad members anyway. I mean, I liked the sniper I always used, because his whining was kind of funny, but the only secondary characters I actually really cared about were Vyse and Aika, because, I mean, fuck, Skies of Arcadia, bitch.
Valkyria Chronicles 2, though, does a lot to make you care about your squadmates, not the least of which is giving each of them their own cutscenes and mission. I actually feel like I know my squad this time around, and the fact that using all my squad members allows me to diversify my squad with new unit types means that there's a gameplay benefit to that.
Oh, and anyone who says the story of VC2 isn't as good... Shut up. Yes, it's lighter in tone, the cutscenes are over quicker, and there's a lot more reliance on "talking heads," but that really just makes it better suited to portable play. It still deals with heavy themes, (for the record, civil war is about a hundred times worse than war with a foreign power,) and it manages to cover new ground while staying true to its predecessor and, most importantly, actually having a fucking ending. That's more than I can say of 90% of the retcon-filled bullshit sequels that have become commonplace in the medium.
So, yeah, VC2 wins. Don't get me wrong, they're both pretty much perfect games in their own right. VC2 is just... more... perfect? Fuck you, it makes sense.
