Game SERIES Debate to the Death! Suikoden series photo

Last week we began the process of gathering the final contestants for the many-month-long RPG debate to the death! Before moving on this week with Suikoden, let's see which game from the Tales RPG saga made the cut and will enter the tournament fighting for its series. Here are the results:

  • Tales of Symphonia (30 votes) -- Winner!!!
  • Tales of Vesperia (18 votes)
  • Tales of Phantasia (7 votes)
  • Tales of Destiny 2 (5 votes)
  • Tales of Destiny (4 votes)
  • Tales of the Abyss (4 votes)
  • Tales of Eternia (4 votes)
  • Tales of Rebirth (1 vote)

This week is the same as last week, except now you're all discussing which Suikoden game was the best out of the entire series. Which one game is so good that it deserves a spot in the tournament to fight in behalf of all the others that don't make the cut?

What Suikoden game should make it to the tournament brackets and why? What sets it apart from every other game in its series? Sell me on the idea! Get me stoked to see it compete in the tournament! Give it some serious thought, share your reasoning with all of us, and then check back next week to see how your game did!

I recommend any vote not placing II in the top spot be rendered invalid.

Two should win even though I liked five the most.

Suikoden II is my pick. I don't see how any other Suikoden game can match Suikoden II in a popularity contest. Suikoden 4 will probably be the least liked too.

I'll go V (even though II will win it all and IV should get NO votes).

I loved S3 for telling such a magnificent story and having such extraordinary characters, but I would have to name S2 as the pinnacle of all things Suikoden.

S2 had the most personal conflict, with the protagonist and his best friend, Jowy Atreides, finding themselves on different sides in a bitter war. It threw a hell of a lot of curves at you, with all the betrayals and out-right villainy. It also had one of the best antagonists in gaming, Luca Blight, who made villagers act like pigs in return for their lives, then killed them anyway. Oh, and don't forget the saga of Neclord, Viktor, and the hilariously awesome Star Dragon Sword.

Suikoden 2 is definitely #1. 5 is second. 1 is third.

Never got to play much of Suikoden II, on account of it never being re-released on PSone Classics and it's the most expensive game on the PSX.

But I did borrow it. And from what I played, I loved every second of it. The art was beautiful, the battles were fun, and Luca Blight is the most delightful psychopath in a game since Ryuji Yamazaki.

I do have the original Suikoden and I also loved it to pieces. Then, I tried playing IV... and it bored me to tears. Lost interest in trying the rest of the series because of four.

Suikoden 2 is not only my favorite Suikoden game---but in my opinion, the best RPG ever.

The story itself is emotionally the most powerful of the series, not to mention some of the best Suikoden characters make appearances in this game (Even though some cross over to other games as well). I just see this game as the pinacle of the general "Water Margin" formula used in all 5 games (but especially in 1, 2, and 5).

Oh, and even the "bad" endings (Out of the 5-6 you can get) still pull at my heartstrings just a little bit.

Oh yeah, just in case I didn't make it clear - I'm voting for Suikoden II.

On an unrelated note - Tales of Symphonia won the Tales of vote? Wow. It's definitely not the worst, but it's so far from the best that it's mind numbing.

Suikoden II hands down!

Jowy Atreides is one of the best characters in videogames EVAR, not to mention Luca Blight, hail to the mad prince!

And the ability to load ur data from suikoden I makes it even better.

I dunno why they havent released it yet for the PSN

2, hand down Suikoden 2 is the best out of the series, they need to add that to the playstation store.

3 was okay, 4 was abyssmal, 5 was decent.

Even though Suikoden 2 is going to win I'm gonna have to say Suikoden 5 for three reasons:
1) I love Suikoden 5
2) Those Rock/Paper/Scissors battles are fucking awesome
3) I've never played Suikoden 2

My vote's for the original, but that's no dismissal of the sequel. They are both in my top ten RPGs of all time list.

Suikoden II...........

The best RPG on the first playstation...

@ Jackyson

I perfer WRPGs, but the first two Suikoden games had moral choices that impacted the plot......plus Suikoden II edges out Planescape Torment for RPG of 1999. Suikoden II is a top tier JRPG.

@ hello7143

hardly......Suikoden I was a nice start, but it is far too cliched and ages worse than 2d SNES RPGs.

Suikoden II however, subverts many JRPG cliches, like the youth of the heroes not being glorified, but the fact that they are fighting, a moral outrage. It was also not a traditional good vs evil story, even with one of the nastiest villains in video games, the true conflict wa sbetween two friends caught on opposite sides of a war. The first game was a traditional rebels vs empire story, the second wasn't and many antagonists could be considered "good".

And I say of the JRPG genre as a whole, only FFVI and Chrono Trigger are better than Suikoden II.

I've never played II.

I vote for II. III has its charms. They are fairly significant charms. It's also possibly the most mind-numbing game in existence. The first was generic, the less said about IV and V the better (and yes, I played them. I wish I hadn't).

If the first one was Final Fantasy Adventure for the original Game Boy then I vote for that one. That game was amazing.

Uh nope, Final Fantasy Adventure was the first Secret of Mana game. And the FFL games for GB were part of the SaGa series. Suikoden is all Konami. I never really played any of them though.

I've only finished 1,2, and 3. 5 and tactics are just sitting on my rack gathering dust.
So, yeah, 2 wins. Is this even necessary? I mean last time I checked, 2 was like $150 on ebay. Really hoping it gets some PSN love soon. And on the topic of Konami, make a Castlevania compilation already, jerks.

I've only played 3 and 1 and I stopped playing 3 after 5 hours. I have wanted to play 2 very badly for a loooooooong time, but 100+ bucks for a used PSone game is too much, no matter how good it is.

So I vote for 1, and for heaven's sake Sony and Konami, put 2 on PSN!

I've only played the first 3 games but I absolutely loved them. Out of them all I'd say my favorite is 2 though, just because it took everything about the first game and added tons of depth, better castle building, more sidequests/ minigames, cooler locations, better duels and large scale battles, etc.

It also had great antagonists (Luca!) and multiple endings- if you get all the characters and do something special during the final battle you get one of the most satisfying endings in a game ever, imho.

Totally worth the $80 it cost me on ebay!
