thats it....
Mario Party = shovelware wii crap that is not online
It's a different kind of 2d fighters that offers some great and intesting mechanics of play, in most of it's iterations it's had great multiplayer and a decent single player as well. However I think that the series has peaked and it's in dire need of serious innovation before it goes stale.
Mario Party doesn't really have a single player component and I've always felt that it just "another minigame collection" with a lack of cohesion.
Lack of a decent netcode for online play. After playing SF2THDR, SF4, and BlazBlue, there's no way in hell I can go back to input lag. That's so 2004.
When I played Mario Party I could play with anybody. I could play while drinking. I could play solo, even though the computer is full of dick moves. But most importantly I could play it while partying... making it a MARIO PARTY.
The answer is simple... Mario Party.
The Super Smash Bros. series isn't as open to everyone but it's not incredibly hard to pick up and play either. I haven't had the chance to get into the fine gameplay mechanics of Brawl, but the nuances and advanced learning curve for Melee was incredible by any standard.
Bonus: A few rounds of Melee can really make my eyes hurt.
BQ:It's not as much fun without a group of people to play with
(This goes for both games actually)
Mini games with mario characters or Nintendo mascots beating the crap out of each other?
Not that Mario party is bad how many games can they make, what was it now ten?
Bonus: The online play in Brawl is so terrible that there have been times when I've decided to just play against the computer rather than bother trying to get into a decent online game.
Mario Party, while sometimes enjoyable, fills me with rage more often than not. I'm doing fine, having a ball, then BAM! I either lose my stars, or some idiot gets stupid reward bonus stars for made-up reasons that make no sense. If it were just minigames, I'd probably enjoy it more. SSB, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise on the N64, while Melee added a ton of features I never knew I wanted but later found I couldn't live without, and Brawl was even better (in my opinion). But seriously, I think no franchise has ever had such a dramatic increase in quality from one game to the next as Smash Bros. 64 to Melee (which is saying something, since the original was so good).
Bonus Question: No-funs who say the "real" way to play is with all the things that make the game unique turned off.
BQ: I wish Brawl had better online
Not only that, it's a great game to play with my family and whoever plays it enjoys it immeasurably, more so than wii play/sports. It's the only wii game I seriously wish was on my PS3.
So, my vote goes to SSBB.
The only thing I don't like? It's not on the PS3, that's it!! :)
I mean, as much as I loved Mario Party 2 (FUCKING CLASSIC!), Mario Party just seems to have lost, for a lack of a better word, it's "magic", in recent years. It's literally the same thing, year-in, year-out. Smash Bros. is always upping the ante, and surprised the hell out of all of us when we saw Solid Snake in the revel trailer. Plus, even though it's three iterations in, it's still just damn good.
Super Smash Bros. Lots of good memories with friends and it has a lot of cartoonish style that a lot of brawlers don't have, mainly because it's one big Nintendo wet dream.
I only own one Mario Party game (4) and I know I'll never want to return to it again because there's nothing interesting about the formula anymore.
BQ: Some characters are worthless.
"Mario Party used to be amazing. But now it's dog shit and I'm glad it's dead. Vote: Smash Bros."
I'd love to say "But guysss, Mario Party used to be so good, and the newest Smash Bros has gone way downhill in that it disappointed with several key attention grabbing features" except, yeah, I'm giving my vote to Smash Bros as well.
Bonus Question: Level maker was underwhelming. Not terrible, but it could have been one of the best things in gaming of the year. All the LittleBigPlanet lovefests? Slipped right through its fingers. Then 90% of its players took those butter fingers and slammed them with a hammer in frustration of its awful online play.
What hope does the series have in the future if it will (and we all know it will) continue to have pathetic online play? That alone makes this much closer of a debate than it might appear. I did give much thought to voting for Mario Party. It just didn't have enough pros to outweigh the cons tho. So Smash Bros it is.
Let this debate be some valuable research for you, Nintendo. Fix yer shit.
Did you WANT mario party to get raped? Seriously, you must have something against it to put it up against a goddamn beast like Smash Bros.
Anyway, Smash Bros. (But only 64, Melee, and Brawl+. Non-hacked Brawl can go suck it.)
Really??
Bonus: I think Brawl was just plain worse than Melee. I was willing to give it a chance, but almost everyone in my group wanted to go back to Melee. As soon as I played Melee again, I realized why. It's faster, metagame is more fun, less randomness, easier combos and low damage kills, and wakeup game actually matters.
Smash Bros.
Mario Party was intriguing at first, but it's very easy to call it Nintendo's Madden. Release after release saw very little in the way of improvements or meaningful changes. 12 games over about 10 years with a number of the same mini-games each. And it's boring as hell to play alone.
Conversely, Smash Bros., a series that has been around for a similar amount of time has three games, each with revamped gameplay and a myriad of improvements in each title.
To me, Smash Bros. is how a Nintendo franchise should be done; released on each console with improvements that show a substantial leap in mechanics and gameplay, improving on the established and introducing innovation when possible.
Even though the online is greatly, shall we say, undeveloped? (same with TMNT: Smash Up, unfortunately... *sigh*)
Mario Party 2. I played many a fun night with that game, and some people I knew who don't normally play video games could get way into that game. When I was younger, it was Surge soda, a pizza, and Mario Party for a birthday party with anybody I could tolerate for 12 hours straight.
why did I not choose Smash Bros. It's simple. Everyone who has ever played that game, kicks my ass relentlessly whenever I've played it, then they get all smug and stupid, with their stupid faces. Then I kick their controllers across the room and say, "wow, you're indeed gay!"
but seriously, gloaty Smash bros. experts are swine, they're worse than swine, they're smelly two-week old overcooked pasta soaking in semen.
bonus: Mario Party is marred by it's subsequent titles, they didn't need to keep making those games, but it's a kiddie franchise, so they didn't actually need to make it all that good. Parents buy the games for their kids because it's the only game they could find that doesn't have AIDS infected eyeballs being splattered across 500 dead jews.
I suck ass at SSB but dude it is fun. WAY more fun that SMP.
Oh, and don't forget that game in Mario Party 1 where you HAD TO SPIN THE ANALOG STICK AROUND REALLY FAST UNTIL YOU GOT A GIANT BLISTER ON YOUR PALM!!!
So, my vote obviously goes to Smash Bros.
Bonus: Where's a Smash Bros. game on the DS?!? At least it might have working online play...
I've played my share of Mario Party, it was fun, I destroyed many a friendship because of the games' incredible unwavering bias towards me, and the games were a nice distraction, but it's one of the most shallow experiences I've ever bothered to actually play for a long period of time.
Compare that to Smash Brothers, which I am still playing to this day, both Melee and Brawl, and would probably even go back and play original if I had the opportunity. I don't even think online play is the way to go with Brawl simply because a great deal of the value I've gotten from it comes from being able to play it with others in a living room setting with friends and just trash talking, yelling, etc. It just wouldn't be the same to play it with just another person's voice coming through a mic though.
But then there is Super Smash Brothers. All the comments pretty much sums up the good and the bad of this game. But me and my friends even had real trophies made up for this game. It is the ultimate party game.
I vote for SSBM.
Bonus: I don't enjoy Mr Game and Watch.
Smash Bros is much better because there's elements of strategy and planning that go into this fighter, much unlike any other fighter I've ever seen. Plus, the chaos of certain levels makes for great fun.
Basically, Mario Party is random for all the wrong reasons while Smash Bros is random for all the right reasons.
I play every day still. With my boyfriend, of course. it's nice living with another gamer. (we really do play every day!)
though, dissidia's taking the time away lately. such a better game! and AWESOME with multiplayer!
This is going to be a blow out. While I had fun times with Mario Party 2 back in the day and the DS title is pretty damn fun when you have someone to play with there's just been way too many versions. Mario Party 8 is tragically bad and the disc load times slow things down even more.
Super Smash Bros got me addicted to gaming on the N64 and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Mario Party may have a Mario/Nintendo theme, but it is first and foremost a party game, and that's where the essence of the game lies. You don't need to know the characters and the universe in order to have fun picking up little orbs in bumper cars. Smash Bros, on the other hand, hinges primarily on its all-star cast of licensed Nintendo characters. The gameplay is solid and fun, but if it had an original cast of characters, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is. Smash Bros relies heavily on the assumption that its players are familiar with the characters it has to offer, and for most gamers this assumption holds up quite nicely. For me, however, a gamer who has never owned any of Nintendo's platforms, the nostalgia and familiarity simply isn't there. My roommate in college last year played Smash Bros on his Wii a lot, and whenever I joined him I would ALWAYS play as Snake. I had a lot of fun with it, and I loved the Shadow Moses arena, but considering how much more the game has to offer to Nintendo veterans, I could never shake the nagging feeling that I was being left out of the larger party.
On the other hand, I've been playing Dissidia a LOT lately, and being a longtime Final Fantasy fan I'm getting a lot out of it, but I have no delusions about the fact that if the game wasn't centered around the Final Fantasy universe, I probably wouldn't be so engaged in it.
Just to clarify, 'cause I'd rather not be crucified, I'm not saying that Smash Bros is by any means a bad game, and I'm not even necessarily saying that Mario Party is a hands-down better game. I'm just saying that I've personally had much more fun playing Mario Party than I ever have playing Smash Bros.
Anyone who votes for Mario Party over Smash needs to be shot.
STD no longer stands for "Sexually Transmitted Disease". It now stands for "Smash Till Dawn"...that's how awesome Smash Bros. is.
painting virtual houses is fun
Well, both of them have EXCELLENT multiplayer perspectives, but Mario Party has something that is very hard to find in Super Smash Bros.: Strategy.
Admit it, a huge part of what you loved Mario Party was to fuck up your friends by stealing stars, coins, fucking up the tables of the game by chance time, the mini game cooperation.
Super Smash Bros is a glorious title and the best thing a Nintendo fan could ever ask, because they feature all what relies behind the window of fanboyism, all the characters, all the cameos, all the information, all the rarities, the remixes, everything. But the multiplayer experience is at risk from the moment someone is just too damn good at it and abuses of it and becomes a tourney fag. You know, those assholes that only use Falco, Metaknight and Ike.
Sure, what I hate of Mario Party is that it lost a great part of what it was: Something worthful. It was about the 4th that the series jumped the shark by included a lot of unnecessary features on an already balanced party game.
I think we should blind off a thing away, Party games became extremely "popular" when the Wii came out, and we got tired as shit of them by all the unnecessary Ubisoft sacrilege.
For the sole part of Mario party reaching to be a game all about chances over skill (except maybe on mini games), I take it because it balances every player to the same opportunity of winning despite experience. If you want to prove me otherwise, demonstrate me Mario Party tourneys.
By the way, it would be genius that they made a new one but with a Nintendo all-stars. Kind of like, Smash party, or whatever.
One thing I don't like about it? The cloooooones.
