No, this is NOT a tough debate! MK is shit, and has ALWAYS been shit. Anyone who has played a fighting game will easily tell you SF. There's a reason you don't see MK at serious fighting game tournaments... (psstt.. I'll give you a hint: it sucks.)
I think SF had more successful titles than MK. my opinion always sways, but ends up in SF corner. They messed up the series when MK switched to 3d, characters were not as detailed AND 1 fatality made the game bland.
I really don't see how people can claim that MK 'isn't afraid to try new ideas' and yet Street Fighter somehow is. Out of all the people who picked Mortal Kombat, how many are actually still playing the games?
I loved MKII, but the series just lost me after that. I've screwed around with the later installments with my friends, but they all lack depth and charm. Street Fighter has been a consistent part of my gaming life since I was a kid. It's iconic and timeless.

I like Mortal Kombat's style, and I have played it more, being that I was never good at fighting games, I always liked Mortal Kombat more because I liked the sound effects, music, and the colors more.

To this day I'm still in disbelief that this was even a debate in the '90s. Street Fighter, no question. MK was fun, but come on.

Mortal Kombat was cute in a "ooh shiny" sort of way. But once you get down to it, its only appealing to people who like fighting games for flashy explosions of gore.

Street Fighter, there's just a lot more to love from the series as a whole. While the first four or so entries from either series are respectable, Street Fighter just continued with the awesome for a longer period of time.

Street Fighter, easily. Mortal Kombat was cool when it first came out, and it came close to goodness with MK2, but overall the series is pretty crap. I am willing to put forth that it only became popular in the first place because of its controversial content, and not for any other reason. The implication that MK could even hold a candle to the Street Fighter series is a hilarious and awful notion.

My vote goes to Street Fighter.
Reason: Mostly, I enjoy 2d fighters moreso, but my favorite 3d fighter is Tekken w/o a doubt. It's always been hard to choose between SF and Tekken and usually the one with the most recent release will be current favorite.
The gameplay in SF just seems more fluid to me, though I haven't played the most recent entries in the MK series.
Bonus: More characters, hopefully another 2d remake with ridiculously gorgeous 2d sprites/animations. More along the lines of Alpha 3. As well as some more HD remixes or at least, HD rereleases of Alpha 3, 3rd Strike, and a few others maybe.

What I'd like to see-an ACTUAL sequel, not a confused prequel (SF 4 is like Street Fighter 2.8 with all the in-continuity games that take place at the same time), and maybe to have the EX characters make it into a 2D game.

I've not played either since i was a kid, but i remember liking Street Fighter better, because of the characters.

I played mk as a child but i could tell that all the games are not my style as i grew, capcom released streetfighter and i nver played it, i played things based on it and i loved it like streetfighter vs xmen. For that game alone i must SIDE WITH STREET FIGHTER

I remember how much I used to play MKII on the Sega Genesis, and how I thought Kung Lao was the coolest character in that game. But as I grew and I started to venture into the arcades, SF started to grow on me a bit more. And Capcom had the better idea regarding where their games should go than what Acclaim/Midway did, in my opinion. I have to go with Street Fighter.

To be honest, I never understood what's so great about MK. The fighting always felt off for me, the characters were barely cool and all it had was the gore, which doesn't improve gameplay one bit.

MORTAL KOOOOOBA----pfffshhhhh I can't say it. Seriously. Street Fighter IS fighting games. While it may not represent the future (if they have one), it's certainly the defining point of what they were for the last 2 decades or so.
While MK is fun while it lasts, SF never stops to be fun, and is ultimately a vastly superior game in every aspect.

It's the only reason I don't own SFIV. It's kind of like Final Fantasy. If you're not into FF it's easy to enjoy a FF title on your own but if you're trying to playthrough with a fan all you hear is all this bullshit about the plot and the other FF's and what you're doing wrong and blah, blah, blah. Shut the fuck up and let me enjoy my game like the novice I know I am!

The SF series has titles such as: SFIICE, SF3rd strike, SF alpha3 & SFIV.. seriously, there is no way that MK can compete with that. MK1 was a LOT of fun & I really enjoyed MK2 as well. But, dropped the series as it progressed.. SF seems to get better & better!

If it was sf2 versus mortal kombat 2 it would be tougher but the series at a whole? No question that street fighter is better. Sure they both made poor transitions to 3d but sf bounced back and introduced new ganeplay elements that worked eg parry system. Mortal kombat on the otherhand was a product of a time where all you needed was blood and guts to be cool. It never really fine tuned the fighting, only made it unnecessarily complicated with multiple stances. The fatalaties aren't even relevant today (not with stuff like gears of war being around).
Bassically, you take away the blood and guts and mortal kombat has nothing. Take away supers or hell even ryu and ken from sf and you still have a fantastic fighting game

I preferred MK all the way up to MK3. It was ludicrously gory, had much more bizzare characters with even weirder arrays of moves, and of course the old FINISH HIM was awesome. Street Fighter just seemed to churn out the same title again and again, with the only change being you could play Ryu with a turquoise gi.
MK fell from grace after 3 though, and although SF only had the Marvel vs Capcom series to sustain it, they were still superior to the MK dross.
Cut to now: MK vs. DC was pants. SFIV is pretty solid. My vote goes for SF.
