Crystal. It took the best games in the series, changed it up a bit, and what was that? Did it just...OH MY GOD THE POKEMON CAN MOVE!! Sounds silly now, but that was a big deal for me at the time.
Obviously, pokemon gold/silver takes this whether you're a fan of classic pokemon or the new shitz.

The original Pokemon games will always be the best. They can add a million more Pokemon and gimmicky features, but I doubt they'll ever be able to match what the original games accomplished.

Gold/Silver undoubtedly. Red and Blue was the first game I ever put over 20 hours into and my hype going into Gold and Silver was insane. I remember getting both on release and not stop playing for days. It added Pokemon that grew on me unlike any other generation. Also going back to the original area of Red and Blue was awesome. I'm playing Heart Gold at the moment after just putting 50 hours into Platinum and the difference in just overall fun is highly noticeable. They really took all the leftover ideas and put them into Gold/Silver to make one of the greatest overall games of all time for me.
Also Scyther/Scizor are my favorite pair of Pokemon. First thing I did in Heart Gold was figure out the fastest way to get Scyther in game and evolve him.

My favorite Pokémon game is Pokémon Emerald... I know you're all saying "Are you kidding me??!!" or something like that, but it was the first Pokémon game I owned *played others before that but they were my cousin's* and that the Battle Factory was effin cool! I mean, the Battle Pyramid was one of the coolest Pokémon levels ever! It was hard but I was happy when I finally beat Brandon and his 3 Regis!!
Bonus: My favorite Pokémon and evolution is Torchic. When I evolved it to Blaziken, it was the friggin powerhouse in my team! In fact, I defeated the Elite Four with just Blaziken in my team for like 5 times in a row. Sadly though, I have no idea where my Emerald is...

My vote definitely has to be for Pokemon Gold/Silver. By the time the second wave came out, I had played through Red and Blue countless times and exploited every glitch I knew of. It was nice to finally get a change of pace with the second couplet, and I played my copy of Silver to the death. To this very day, Lugia still remains my favorite of the Legendary Pokemon, and my second favorite overall.

I'd have said HeartGold/SoulSilver, which I think are actually superior to Gold and Silver in every way, but the fact of the matter is, it is very easy to build upon an extremely succesful foundation, and that foundation was laid by Gold and Silver. HG/SS as remakes, had nothing more to do than to translate the old formula in modern terms.
I understand that my vote will go towards HG/SS anyway, since G/S/C/HG/SS all count as one game, but I thought I'd make it clear, as far as I am concerned, NOTHING matches up to the original Gold and Silver, not even the remakes.

HeatGodl/SoulSilver. It is everything that is good about the series, concentrated in one title. A truly amazing game. I already have about 230 hours game time in it.

I'm voting for Emerald. It was the first one I played through fully after Red. The gameplay was still fast (unlike the DS games) and it had so much to do. Most of my best Pokémon came from that game.

hate to bandwagon, but og gold and silver were the last major inovators, and remake gs was the first pokemon game I have played since, and seems to have added one of the biggest improvements to the series to date, a drag and drop interface for the pc... on the pokemon end any way. also pokewalker.....yeah.....So my vote goes for gs/remakes.

My personal favorite is Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. It was the first game in the series to completely eliminate the next-gen issue by allowing you to download Pokemon captured in the previous generation of games. Also the Vs. Seeker made its very welcome return.
I have to go with heart gold. I loved the original and the remake improves in every aspect.

Pokemon Blue, because it had Blastoise on the front(instead of Lameizard), and also because you could do the Rare Candy cheat(because who the hell actually takes the time to level their Pokemon to 100?).

Lugtor: Pokemon is a JRPG. If we stop looking at the Pokemon as pets, and instead as party members, the leveling, status effects, HP, and battle system are all pretty straightforward JRPG fare. I don't see how it's NOT, really.
It's a unique RPG, clearly. Both thematically and mechanically the series has its differences from the norm with the infinitely flexible party, one v one fights, collection aspect, etc. But tweaking the established form of the genre doesn't remove it from the genre. completely.
