Game SERIES Debate to the Death: Mario Kart VS Gran Turismo photo

Last week I think we killed a game series. No one checked to see if it was breathing, we just all ran in fear and guilt. Could we have done anything to save the series? We might have to make a pact to never tell anyone about that night, ever. Not even that hot girl you want to confide in to get into her pants. What we did was wrong:

  • Rock Band series (136 votes) -- What the . . .
  • Guitar Hero series (17 votes) -- Oh wow . . .

It was so bad that several of the votes for Guitar Hero were from first time posters . . . who have yet to comment since then. Should I suspect that maybe this corpse was passed around Activision and Neversoft emailers in an attempt to soften the blow of this legendary landslide? Doubtful, but last week certainly felt painful to watch. It had to be done though -- Dtoid will always be the voice of gamers everywhere. Besides, I suppose it's a good thing when the Dtoid army can damn near unanimously agree on something. Let's see how this week goes, but this time I'm not going to be the one who has to bury the victims.

Which series do you like better as a whole, and why? What aspects or individual games of the series made up your mind? Give it some serious thought, get your racing friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What was one thing you did not enjoy about the series you voted for?

Mario Kart, and the one thing I don't like is the rubberband ai (inb4 wardrox) It wasn't that bad in the prior titles, but it's got to be frankly absurd in the latest iteration

Series as a whole? Mario Kart by a mile.

But I second toning down the rubberband AI. And don't even get me started on the blue shell/lightning bolt spam. At least you could defend against a red shell back in the day...

Mario Kart is definitely more fun for me (and my friends) than Gran Turismo. I do, however hate it when one of my buddies blue shells me right before the finish line on the last lap.

Both blow dick. Burnout is the only racing series I've ever thoroughly enjoyed (until it went open world).

Fuck this debate. They're both losers in my book.

Mario Kart for me.

Never really liked realistic drivers (had a bit of fun with the NFS titles, but that's it), I don't know... I just like the way it plays, the way it sounds, the way it looks, the added craziness more than realistic racers. I prefer to do things in video games that are impossible in real life.

Also, multiplayer in MK is fun as hell! Damn that blue shell though...

On a whole I feel that the MarioKart series has shown higher quality. I love GT but it was surpassed by Forza a long time ago. So my vote goes to MarioKart.

I will reluctantly give it to Mario Kart because of the good times we've had in the past. The rubberbanding AI has grown far far worse though, and infuriates me.

To those not in the know, rubberbanding AI refers to being able to get hella drunk, play mario kart wii, do NOTHING for the first 5 seconds of the match.... just sit at the starting line. and then the code is forced to give you the best items every time u get an item box, and you either end up in first or second every time if you have any skill at all dodging people as you whizz by them thanks to terrible coding. Mind you this is not done on accident, it's well known about, and apalling how noob/kid friendly the game is. Make a freakin easy mode so we can turn it on and off. Mario Kart Wii was useless because of this. Garbage.

I'm going to go with Gran Turismo. I'm a much bigger fan of driving games where the cars aren't just go-karts driven by turtles and men with mustaches. Not having damage on the car was annoying because I enjoy realism, but GT5 is planning to change that to some degree.

PS, i chose this topic due to the recommendation of Forza VS GT series last week. so im now considering doing a string of SERIES debates for a few weeks. I could easily do Forze VS the winner of this week.

Sound good?

Suggestions for future series vs series debates?

Mario Kart, because it is fun to play & it has fantastic music.

What i don't like about it is the stupid blue shell of doom.

I never had fun with Gran Turismo, i always thought it was pretty boring.

BS: Snaking in online matches, some cheap power ups, lack of innovation in the recent games.

My one complaing about the GT series is it's lack of damage though. Looks like GT5 should fix that. Finally

Mario Kart, because it's just damn fun. The power-ups, the balloon battles, I love it. To be honest, I loathe racing sims and "realistic" driving games, so there's no way I could've ever picked GT.

Bonus Question: I hate the cheap AI, and the battle maps have somehow disappointed me in every game that wasn't the SNES original.

This is gonna be another landslide. Mario fucking Kart. GT is boring, and places too much stock in realism and fine tuning. Mario Kart is pick up the game, select a mode, and have some fun with friends.

Mario Kart.
No contest.
I hate racing in just about any game. Guess what the exception is?

Realistic racing games are just so boring and lame. But what do I know? I never, ever ever play them. I've mostly only played them in arcades. When I do end up playing them on consoles, I get bored pretty quickly. Except for maybe Motorstorm, which I played on my friend's PS3. That was okay, because I could use the motion-control and it made it a bit challenging to pull off at first. But it still got boring.
In all honesty though, I haven't played a Gran Turismo game in probably over 10 years.

MARIO KART FOREVER.

Oh yeah- if I want to drive "realistic" cars really fast and crash into shit, I'll do it in my real car. Thanks.

Forgot the bonus question:
Blue shells are so cheap and overpowered. Rubber-banding sucks. Lack of innovation in the last couple of games. Pretty much what everyone else has been saying.

Gran Turismo is so boring, I may as well just get in my own car and drive in a circle. Mario Kart is so ludicrous, it blows my mind that I can still have fun with it after so many years, so I have to go with Mario Kart.

One thing I don't like about it? The fact that I can never have the glory of being in first place for more than half a race. It's a sad thing to go through.

Mario Kart easily. Every game in the series is great fun. 4 player matches on the block fort on the n64 were glorious. Only issues come with exploits and sometimes when god smites you with multiple blue shells in a row!

Gran Torismo? Neither realistic or fun. What it fails to achieve in being good it tries to make up with content. 10 million cars to play bumper bowling with!

Mario kart 100 percent. Mario kart is a decent racing game with everyone's fav plumber, with fun multiplayer and some unpredictability (powerups). It can be enjoyable in groups and alone. GT is a seroius racer, with realistic everything. All cars drive differently but slowly, its very technical. Actually, its all about the pace, i play driving games to have a sense of speed and quick/dangerous stunts to pull (read:need for speed: most wanted cop chase on high levels). Now the most hated part of mario kart has to be the rubberbanding when at the finish line. OMG AHHHH, i hate that so much. Even when i have a mushroom?!?!?

Mario Kart, all the way. One of the few games that doesn't need an update and is actually more fun to go back and play older versions. One thing I didn't like? 12 racers in MK Wii. The game is actually quite tolerable when there's only 4-8 people in a race. But when you add 4 more, the it's too many "last place" items everywhere, good god.

I get bored pretty quickly of racing games that try to go for a realistic approach. I've never cared for games such as Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, or Burnout.

Mario Kart gets my vote.

While the franchise typically suffers from cheap rubber band AI (unlocking Dry Bones Bowser in MK Wii is a real pain in the ass) and the notorious combat system could be better balanced, it's characters, combat items, and the Mushroom Kingdom setting that adds personality to the games. In addition, Mario Kart's got a nice variety of race tracks and multiplayer gives it high replay value.

As far as where the franchises are headed (Mario Kart Wii has miis on the tracks and uses a plastic steering wheel that has no effect on input- the remote does all the work, and Gran Turismo is looking more realistic and has damage), Mario Kart is a joke.

I loved all the Mario Karts up through Mario Kart DS, but as far as the game content goes, a weekend rental can clear everything in the N64 and GCN games easily. The main draws to Mario Kart are the ease with which people can learn how to play (hold "A" and pretend to drive), and the nostalgia factor (as evidenced by the constant repackaging of 'classic tracks').

As a completionist who rarely has three other players gathered around the television with me, my vote goes for Gran Turismo. It's the RPG of Racers, and gives you a sense of accomplishment for each upgrade you earn for your vehicle. Mario Kart rewards you for being lucky with items and rubber bands like no other racing game due to lightning bolts and blue shells.

Mario Kart.
Gran Turismo was kind of fun back on PS1 but Mario Kart has never stopped being great.

Oh, and I was under the impression that 'rubberbanding' means that the vehicles towards the back of the pack are capable of driving faster than the vehicles at the front of the pack.
Didn't think it had anything to do with Power-Up distribution (although obviously Mario Kart does that too). But rubberbanding in driving games has been around forever and has to do with being overtaken by someone with a magically higher top speed than yourself, no?

I never cared for mario kart. Played with friends but it died quickly. Yet... Crash Team Racing went on for a while. I never understood why, but it was more fun.

Anyway, Gran turismo gets my vote. Some of the few realistic racing games i enjoyed.

While I have enjoyed my time with games in either series, my vote will have to go to Mario Kart. The Gran Turismo games are fine simulations, but after awhile it all feels the same--as a good simulation should. It stopped being exciting and started being work, and it was at that point that I said goodbye to the series and haven't looked back.

BONUS: The one thing I don't like most about the Mario Kart series is how over time it because less about skill and more about luck.

Honestly GT is a game very much for car enthusiast and I think I'm safe in saying most gamers aren't going to *get it* I don't like it much either but know plenty of what we'd consider *non-gamers* who love that kind of thing.

Although I don't really want to vote for Mario Kart as it's gone so far downhill it's terrible...and I always like the original Crash Team Racing more.

Bonus - Rubberbands and Blue Shells and Cheapass Bullets and omg...why even bother trying.
