Doesn't really matter, the first one all the way.
KOTOR 2, while fun, felt incomplete and sometimes an utter waste of time.
Bonus Question: I'm having a hard time deciding on any obvious drawbacks that annoyed me. It could just be because I havent played it in a long time though.
Bonus Question: I hated that it was rushed and some of the more intricate details of the story were lost, but that's what we have a mod community for.
KOTOR 1 was better because the story was amazing and the reveal there was just amazing. It also opened up the star wars series to whole new lot of possibilities.
The one thing I didn't like...Kashyyyk. Not really the whole thing just the Shyriiwook.
While the second game had deeper RPG mechanics and recruitable NPC interaction, plus a more satisfying endgame that wasn't essentially just "The Baldur's Gate twist again." too many assets were reused and the ones that were added didn't always look right. Had KotOR 2 been released before KotOR 1, I would have considered the Bioware version to be a major letdown, but such was not the case.
Also, I don't consider black humor to be a strong part of the Star Wars movies beyond a few moments of Droid torture. Since this is something Obsidian does VERY well, they included more than fit the franchise.
...and yes, Obsidian did that sequel, not Bioware, just as they are currently making Fallout New Vegas instead of Bethesda (Thank God). For that franchise, Black Humor is ESSENTIAL, and Obsidian will nail it.
Oh and the crashing only happened with the PC versions. If you had xbox then you delt with ridiculous load times.
When will it be Ultima's turn???? Seriously, an RPG tournament without either Ultima IV or Ultima VII: The Black Gate (or Serpents Isle) would be a fail tournament.
Bonus: I'm not really sure, since it's been so bloody long. Oh wait, I know. I would love for Taris (first town) to not lag my computer horribly, please. Game starts in a ship of corridors. Then you land and it's a big, wide-open town...and the game for some reason feels like it has to render EVERYTHING even way outside of view distance. It was so bad that my party actually started to run backwards at times, if I could get them to move at all. This was really the only time it happened, even in 2. D:
BONUS: What I didn't like about KotOR 1...
Just like the reality show Survivor, I liked it a lot but it wasn't worth how it changed the landscape of television completely. For every The Bachelor there is an Action-RPG, with a strong emphasis on the Action.
Where KOTOR II does win points over is the improved character systems, abilities tree, and also the Sith designs. I loved the KOTOR II Sith far more than I ever did Malek. Malek was.... eh, just your archtypical student-gone-powerhungry. He was basically Voldemort without a jaw.
But yes, KOTOR I was the more enjoyable.
Bonus question: I never felt compelled to make much use of a number of the items in the game. Same thing happened to me with Metal Gear Solid 4.
That said, KoTOR 1 is close to perfect. The two games are two sides of the same coin. KoTOR 1 is the Reconstruction of the epic, high fantasy Star Wars story, while KoTOR 2 is the Deconstruction of the epic, high fantasy Star Wars story. Both are really good games, and give you two perspectives on the story.
One thing I didn't like? Tough call, as it's my favorite game ever, but I will admit the graphics could have used more polish, and it had more bugs than an entomologist's lab.
As far as what I didn't like about 1? Some of the mechanics were clunky and the game wasn't as consistently challenging throughout.
At the end of the day though, I'll play either of these before a lot of other RPGs.
Bonus: KotOR 1 took its sweet time to let you become a Jedi >.<
I feel like Kotor 2 got the pacing all wrong. In 1 you start as an average joe, then after playing for a couple hours you become a jedi, in a true "fuck ya" gaming moment. The game makes you really want to be a jedi then BOOM, lightsaber son. Kotor 2 starts you off as a jedi, but it takes half the damn game to collect all the parts for your lightsaber. Building your lightsaber felt like more of a burden than an accomplishment.
It was a step into a new world and a breath of fresh air for the Star Wars mythos. It had a special "feel" to it. An epic tale starting on a dying ship. Falling to a metropolis of a world, and then watching it burn. And traveling across the galaxy as a new Jedi, on your own ship no less, and exploring a vivid cosmos on a new level we had yet been allowed to taste. And that twist. That was cool, too.
My main dislike was the lack of passive auto-heal, which was fixed in KOTOR 2 (enjoyed a lot but had all those damn flaws). Wasted more medkits than was necessary. God bless force heal.
Also, the main thing I didnt like about 1 was it doesnt scale the hud or menus, so large resolutions make everything really small. Even worse in widescreen.
I thought the story itself was better, the music was better, I liked the characters more, and I felt the entire setting had far more of an authentic Star Wars feel than KOTOR 1 did. I loved the prevailing sense of doom you got through all these things throughout most of the game, as you are the last Jedi (essentially), with the ending fight/discussion being a far more satisfying conclusion for me than it was with the ending to KOTOR 1.
I did like KOTOR 1 as well, however it just didn't FEEL like Star Wars as much, mostly because it seemed like there were frigging Jedi and Sith EVERYWHERE...not to say it was bad (not as many glitches for sure) but I had far less emotional involvement with the story than I did with KOTOR 2. The endgame was far less compelling, and the one thing I liked LEAST was the constant respawning mobs in the Star Forge...but that may just be me whining a bit :)
Ahh, good to see that oldschool is still alive and kicking.
and to KOTOR - KOTOR1 - its just better and more consistant gameplay-wise, while KOTOR2 may be better story-wise.
Also, theres been a recent release of patch witch restored huge portion of content in KOTOR2 (and its NOT by TEAM GIZKA, it died a long time ago), its called TSL Restored Content Mod. You may grab it here:
