Last week I introduced a new format for these weekly game debates, and it went great! I used two of the most loved series in the game industry of all time, and the result was just as vicious from both sides as I expected to see. It was a lot of fun to read through everyone's extra commentary on the additional bonus questions, and it offered a whole lot more insight into what we considered before casting our votes. Here was the outcome:
- Legend of Zelda series (91 votes) -- Winner!
- Final Fantasy series (57 votes)
First of all, yes, spinoff games like Halo 3: ODST and Half-Life episodes are included, but Counter-Strike and all other mods of either game are not counted. From there, the choice is up to you.
Which series do you like better as a whole, and why? What aspects or individual games of the series made up your mind? Is your choice mainly due to support for that series, or your dislike of other series? Give it some serious thought, share your thought process with all of us, and then get some FPS friends to join in on the fun.
New Bonus Questions! Hit the jump to see not one, but all of the bonus questions. From now on I'm going to try a slightly new format to encourage more discussion! Feel free to suggest bonus questions of your own that you'd like to see used in next week's debate topic, which is also listed below.
Let's try something new! Feel free to just skip all of this part, and only answer the debate as usual, but for the sake of even more discussion, each week I'll be posting multiple bonus questions. They'll be after the front page fold, and also posted as the first comment on each debate as a reminder. Again, this is just optional, but jump in and have fun exploring any/all of these reasons why you loved or hated each game/series!
BONUS QUESTIONS:
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!
BQ2. Name one thing you like better about the series you didn't pick.
BQ3. What was your favorite and least weapon in each series? Why?
BQ4. What was your favorite and least favorite enemy monster/alien in each series. Why?
BQ5. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
BQ6. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
BQ7. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
SUBMIT YOUR OWN QUESTIONS:
Each week I will post what next week's debate will be, and allow you to all post your own "bonus questions" in the comments for next week's debate. I'll choose the best of the bunch (I can't catch' em all, this isn't Pokémon) and then we can get some serious feedback from all different gamer perspectives on not just each game/series, but also a few individual aspects of those games/series. Have something you're dying to know what other games thought of in the game or series? Post your question in the comments and find out what the response is!
NEXT WEEK'S DEBATE:
Metal Gear Solid series versus the winner of this week's debate!
As usual, there's always an open door policy on suggesting future game debates in the comments. Don't be shy!

I find Halo to be more fun than Half-Life. I respect the series but it doesn't do it for me.
And Half-Life 1 sucked ass.
this is going to be a slaughter
Half-Life, no question.
><><><><><><><><><><><><><
BQ3. What was your favorite and least weapon in each series? Why?
Button Comboes in Halo 2 should be considered a weapon. That martial art would be my favorite weapon in Halo 2.
Least favorite weapon is the post patch nerfed pistol...
BQ4. What was your favorite and least favorite enemy monster/alien in each series. Why?
Elites. <- Fav
Brutes <- Least They are like Elites but they have more hp. Its kinda stupid.
BQ5. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
Halo 1 seeing the crazy marine with just random shit everywhere was pant-shitting-ly awesome and confusing.
BQ6. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
Headlong in Halo2 because it is an amazing map.
BQ7. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
I would not have added brutes. I would have also kept button glitches in Halo 3... >.>
Pros:
- Holy triad of guns, grenades, and melee
- Co-op campaign play
- Huge multiplayer commmunity
Cons:
- Much of said multiplayer community is made up of 12 year old morons
- Short campaign, some backtracking, repetition
- Halo Wars
HALF-LIFE
Pros:
- Excellent story, pacing, and characters
- Nice variety of environments and enemies
- Gravity Gun, D0G
Cons:
- Xen Borderworld from HL1
- Mute protagonist
- Un-milking the franchise. Episode 3 better be really, really good.
I love both games. The story in Half-Life is far better than that of Halo, but I've probably played through the Halo campaigns more simply because of co-op.
It will be sad if half life does not win.
I just couldn't get into Half Life 2. Partially because Barnacles scare the shit out of me.
people know it and its more user friendly.
Also co-op.
BQ3: The gravity gun and dual wielding energy swords. Because they allowed a certain level of creativity killing enemies with.
Also, can I choose MGS ahead of time?
BQ1. A release. Remember Chapter 3 Valve?
BQ2. The online multiplayer and co-op; I don't think it would work in the Half Life series, but I do enjoy it.
BQ3. I love the Sniper Bow in HL and the Energy Sword in Halo; I hated the pistol in HL and I've never taken to the Needler in Halo.
BQ4. Alyx Vance was awesome, and the grunts in Halo were a pleasure. No one in Half Life particularly annoyed me; Halo, there's far too many uninteresting characters. Cortana's mental freakouts in 3 probably took the cake though.
BQ5. I haven't played all the HL2 Chapters yet, but I really enjoyed the ending to HL2. In Halo, moments in multiplayer really got me excited.
BQ6. Ravenholm was awesome. As was Blood Gulch.
BQ7. I probably would've tried to make Half Life 2 a little more focused; driving, squad combat, shooting, and puzzles are all well and good, but I found that (by chapter one, at least) Valve was just repainting the experience. Physics puzzles began to annoy me, but they were never outright unpleasent. As far as Halo, I hate how stiff the characters are (physically and emotionally). I'd love to see better animations and better characterization and, hell, while I'm at it, a better (or at least more involving) story.
My vote is for Halo. It may not be the best game in the world, or even the genre, but the entire series was built around fun.
Half Life
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!
Half Life 2 Episode 3, hopefully Valve's next game after Left 4 Dead 2
BQ2. Name one thing you like better about the series you didn't pick.
Bigger battles in campaign mode.
BQ3. What was your favorite and least weapon in each series? Why?
Favorite: Gravity Gun for Half Life and Gravity Hammer for Halo (mm, gravity weapons)
Least favorite: Can't think of anything for Half Life, sub-machine guns for Halo
BQ4. What was your favorite and least favorite enemy monster/alien in each series. Why?
The Striders in Half Life 2 and the Scarabs in Halo are always fun to fight.
BQ5. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
Half Life: The end of Episode 2. Halo: Not sure actually.
BQ6. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
Half Life: The forest in Episode 2, just cause it's open and your driving around in a jeep the whole time. Halo: In Halo 3, the end of the Covenant level where you just obliterate the remaining Covenant forces.
BQ7. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
Half Life: Try to release them sooner lol (but not to the extent of rushing them.) Halo: Give the Arbiter more attention in Halo 3's story. Seriously, he's a major character in Halo 2, yet they nearly dropped him completely in Halo 3.
BQ1. I hope in the future of the series (Episode 3), we will see a whole new array of enemies, vehicles, weapons, and maps that will take it to a new level. Better friendly AI and the inclusion of the AI director from Left 4 Dead will keep the game fresh every time i play it (Not that it already doesn't rock every time).
BQ2. Half Life has a perfect blend of story and gameplay that always kept me playing. From the amazing escape from Black Mesa to fighting in the streets of City 17 I have always felt like I was Gordan, a badass with a PHD not taking anyones shit.
BQ3. By far the Gravity Gun is my ultimate favorite weapon of any game. Being able to pick up random objects and hurl them at your enemies has never gotten old even to this day. Be it a sawblade cutting a zombie in half to a urinal bashed into a combines face... perfect.
My least favorite weapon in the series would be the Antlion Pheropod's. I never liked having to using antlions to kill my combine prey when I had a arsenal of weapons at my disposal.
BQ4. My favorite enemy would be the zombie. Everyone loves zombies and cutting them in half, then having that top half chase you down is so awesome. Least favorite monster would have to be the hound-eye's from Half Life 1, they were such a bitch to deal with and that noise they made when charging was really annoying.
BQ5. End of Episode 2... nuff said
BQ6. Ravenholm still to this day scares the crap out of me. Hearing those fast zombies climbing up the pipes to have a swipe at me always gets my heart pumping.
BQ7. I would of had Gordon Freeman tell Alyx to shut the fuck up. Damn that bitch wouldn't stop whining about her Dad. lol
Ever?
I vote for Halo, since I personally prefer it more than the Half-Life series, as much as I respect it.
Final words: I don't even think we have a competition here.
BONUS QUESTIONS:
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded!
I just want to see more of the background. Maybe an episode or side story featuring the War where Humanity fell.
BQ2. Name one thing you like better about the series you didn't pick.
The halo series always had the most epic battles. Half Life has its fair share, but nothing quite comes close to the moments in halo when youre fighting alongside a large contingent of other soldiers.
BQ3. What was your favorite and least weapon in each series? Why?
Gravity Gun is the king of weapons, but the combine assault rife was innaccurate and underused (its alt fire was amazing). I've always loved the Magnum in Halo, but everything else feels so generic or underpowered.
BQ4. What was your favorite and least favorite enemy monster/alien in each series. Why?
I like the combine soldiers as theyre still a bit mysterious even after the games, but I dont like the Vortegaunts from HL1, because I know theyre actually good guys, and just enslaved.
Brutes are a pain in the ass, but jeez the damn grunts are just there to annoy you.
BQ5. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most?
*Spoilers*Watching Alyx get stabbed and the moment at the end of HL2: Ep2 was tough to watch, as the HL series actually makes you care about those characters *End Ssoilers*
BQ6. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why?
I love the entire Black Mesa facility. It took corridor shooter to a whole new level.
As for Halo, The Nature Preserve level in New Mumbasa in ODST was a lot of fun.
BQ7. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently?
I would have actually had the HL episodes designed to come out episodically, instead of once every 3 years. Seriously.
As for Halo, well, I would have taken more time. Halo 2 felt rushed and 3 suffered for it. The Halo series became so generic and formulaic after the first game. Half Life completely reinvents itself for each expansion and episode (taking you out of the city, putting you in a soldiers shoes and changing the gameplay style a bit).
Half-Life was always ground-breaking at the time of release, nothing could hold a candle to it. Halo does well on the xbox; but on the PC Halo was not nearly as good as Half-Life. Respect both series; but when it comes to pure FPS goodness, Half-Life wins it.
I have an excuse though! For some reason, playing Half-Life (1 and 2) makes me violently motion sick. It's the only game I've ever encountered that does it, not even other Source engine games do it, nor other intense motion games like Mirror's Edge or racing games.
Halo wins by default for me, since it doesn't make me throw up if I play for more than 20 minutes.
Sorry, Halo is just not that special.
PS Good on Destructoid for making the contest between two Xbox/PC exclusives, so we haven't had to endure any PS3 vs 360 fanboy crap.
this isn't even a fair fight with halo, when you start to talk about HL1 mods and Source mods halo is defenatly not even in the same ball park mainly because it isn't.
I could name hundreds of games that took ideas from HL one of them is Halo.
I could name 20 games that Halo inspired and none of them are worth playing.
BQ1 more games faster than 1 game every 4 or 8 years.
BQ2 That would be hard to do cause there is almost nothing, however I do like it that they ripped the save your coustom multiplayer mode from Perfect dark; makes it easyer to launch fun games right off the bat instead of having to fumble around options for 15 min
BQ3. fav is the rocket luancher that followed the mouse, least fav is all the wepons from HL1 that will not kill enemys in 1 hit to the head.
BQ4. love the head crab zombies they scare me, hate head crab zombies they scare me.
BQ5.probly when you go through the bad guys factory where he is harvesting people to make monsters and wepons of war
BQ6. most of HL1 cause it reminds me of halo but you con't blame them, you get lost easy, there is a huge clift of doom that you can fall off of, there are only one way to continue in a level and if you don't do it a bunch of marines will come down from a chopper/plane and kill you or bomb you *note your wepons are pea shooters*.
BQ7. I would have made the wepons of HL1 more like HL2 in the fact if you shoot some one in the head they die, you can site with the pistol, and the the machene gun actually kills the army people fast.
yeah if you ply HL1 it is very rougf around the edges, but you have to consider that fact that it was made before halo 1
BONUS QUESTIONS:
BQ1. What are you hoping to see in the future from the series you voted for? Feel free to get very detailed and long-winded! More Dog and Alyx... Portal cross overs!
BQ2. Name one thing you like better about the series you didn't pick. In Halo you melee with whatever gun you are holding, I believe the crowbar is the only melee in HL, so having to switch is a bit of a pain sometimes. The crowbar is incredible though.
BQ3. What was your favorite and least weapon in each series? Why? I love the standard pistol... But I have to say the gravity gun, of course!
BQ4. What was your favorite and least favorite enemy monster/alien in each series. Why? HL: love the hunters, hate the black headcrabs. Halo: none either way.
BQ5. What was the moment(s) in each series that emotionally affected you the most? The end of Ep. 2.
BQ6. What is your favorite level or environment in each series? Why? I loved Ravenholm for its creepy setting and great blah blah blah it is awesome. I hate antlions so I hated the sand jumping sections. bleh in halo. I guess I like bloodgultch.
BQ7. Pretend you were the creator of each series. What are some things you would have done differently? If I was making HL I would not have taken so long to make an EPISODE. If I made halo I would milk it even more because there is nothing to worry about diluting and it is basically free money. >.>
BQ1: I'm hoping for an upgrade in graphics. I can do fine without the improvement however I would think it's about time for it since Half-Life 2 looks the same to me as HL2:Episode 2 does. I'd also like to see a little more guns rather than the same recycled ones, they're good and all, however I'd like to see some new ones. Oh, and I'd like to see a release date. =P
BQ2: Multiplayer was overall more fun on Halo 2 since HL2 had no multiplayer.
BQ3: Gravity Gun & Assasult Rifle or whatever the first machine gun is that launches esplosions, least favorite would probably be... Eh. I don't really dislike any weapons in HL2 however if I had to choose it would be the pistol because it's useless compared to the other weapons. "Why not the crowbar?" Well, cause it's a goddamn crowbar, that's why. As for Halo 2 it would be the plasma sword, you know you wanted to try that baby out since you saw it in Halo 1, and then we did get to, and it was awesome (and useful). Least favorite would be either be the plasma pistol or the needler. I loved the plasma pistol in the first Halo because I could charge it up and I would think it was cool, in Halo 2 it costs ammo to do so, weak. As for the needler, it looks awesome and all but it's I find it next to useless.
BQ4: Favorite in HL2 would probably be, well, the the normal zombies. Because they're so fun and easy to kill. Chop em in half, blow the headcrab off their heads, wrestle them with a crowbar, set them on fire and hear them wine about being alive. Least is the poison headcrabs and those guys who f^%#ing throw them. I HATE them with a passion. I'd hate Hunters too if it wasn't for them being so cool looking. Halo 2 I liked the elites flat out the most, hated the flood, like most people. Close behind the flood is brutes because they go berserker.
BQ5: Emotionally? Either the climax of HL2 or going into Ravenholm. "We don't go there anymore." "Don't go to Ravenholm!"...So you go to Ravenholm. Hey DOG your coming with me ri- Oh I see how it is. I'll just fend for myself then in this... Underpopulated town. Thanks lordy for Father Gregori, I'd feel lost without him. D: In Halo it was probably either the first time seeing the freaking flood via dead soldier headcam or the ending of Halo 2. Damn cliff hanger.
BQ6: In the entire series? Either Ravenholm or the ending of HL2 (people who have played you know exactly why), or using the antlion ball thing level. In Halo it would be the 2 city levels.
BQ7: Not much for HL2 besides the changes I brought up earlier. Graphics improvement and perhaps some new guns? In Halo I would have made a more proper introduction cinematic or level for Halo 3. Seriously, they explained nothing as to how the Chief ended up having to smash himself into earth. Maybe you could have started and learned the basics on the covenant ship he was on at the end of Halo 2 instead of in some forest after some cutscene.
Aaaand I can't think of any questions.
BQ1: In the Half-Life series, I hope for a Half-Life 3 after Episode 3's release. After all, I doubt they'll stop there.
BQ2: Multiplayer seems a lot more fun in Halo 1/2/3 then what I've played of Half-Life and the other Valve variety of Multiplayer. The Scarab battles, again, I loved very much too.
BQ3: In the Half-Life series, my favorites would have to be the Gravity Gun(Duh, the focus of most gameplay after all) and the Rocket Launcher. The Half-Life 2 rocket launcher was fun to use against the larger enemies, what with the holming ability. Least favorite would be the Combine Assault Rifle, actually. Way too little ammo for my taste.
For Halo, favorite would be the Spartan Laser, least favorite the Halo 3 Plasma Pistol. Sure, both are pretty useless, but lasering someone is just fun.
BQ4: In Half-Life 2, favorite enemy was the Strider. The scripted events and just normal enemy AI combined quite well to create some very fun fights. Not to mention how various the combat is with them. HL2, it was mostly rooftop fights with rockets. EP1, you were chased down by one and then could kill it. EP2, you had to do tower defense against them. Next to the Striders is definitely the Helicopter, simply for the varying combat with them too. Least favorite... probably the Antlion Workers or whatever. Evil spitters.
Halo, Most favorite is the Scarabs, as said many times already. I just -love- giant destructible battles. Grunts get points for being obnoxiously hilarious too. Least favorite is the Drones. Just...annoying. Especially in the ODST Firefight.
BQ5: Eli Vance's death was very emotional. Most of Halo 2's cutscenes I loved too, especially near the beginning and end of the game.
BQ6: Half-Life 2's Citadel was breathtaking to me mainly because of my weird architectural mindset that's developed over the past few years of pursuing an architecture degree. Least favorite? Nova Prospekt. Just... Hated it and it's repetitiveness and also just going through the levels alone.
Halo's Covenant areas and also Forerunner constructs were awesome visuals to me. Especially loved High Charity and it's grand design. Ironically, my most hated environment in the game was a Forerunner-based level. Sacred Icon, from Halo 2, takes points for being my most hated level in the series. Repetitive and annoying. Quarantine Zone right after, however, I found fun.
BQ7: For Halo, I'd create a LOT more variety in enemies. Including more Covenant-based levels would be great, such as boarding another one of their ships. Another thing I would change would be increasing the frequency of Covenant/Flood battles throughout the later part of the series. Halo 1, there were many moments where you could sit back and watch Covenant and Flood tear each other apart. Didn't happen much, if at all, in later games. Unless you count the times where you PLAYED Covenant or had Flood as allies.
Half-Life... I would add more arsenal variation. Most guns I find uninteresting and useless. I'd also add more Xen-based enemies from Half-Life 1 into Half-Life 2, such as Bullsquids and Houndeyes. I'd also include a LOT of the cut concepts from Raising the Bar too, such as the various Synths, the Cremator, the Air Exchange, Child Factories, etc. A lot of cool concepts cut for time. Sad.
That's my opinion though. Enjoy reading!
Episode 3 would be what i want in the future for this series. Come on wasn't it suppose to be shorter dev time for Episodes...geezzz. Anyway, Grav gun was my favorite weapon. Those dang headcrabs were my least favorite in that series just because they were annoying. I wouldn't change a thing if i was the developers. This game is close to perfect in my book. Can't wait to see how it ends. As for Halo i only played the 2nd and 3rd games. I enjoyed them but i found them to be nothing special. One thing it has over Half-life is Co-op. Which is a plus. But for single player action and story Half-life2 was a better game.
