Game SERIES Debate to the Death! Fallout series photo

In last week's debate we discussed the pros and cons of two of the most loved games in recent years, and both games saw an immense amount of support, with many elaborate posts that I really enjoyed reading. Dtoid reader knutaf even wrote a community blog about the debate! With well over 100 votes cast, it looks like the winner will surely be a strong contender in the massive-sized RPG series tournament that we're slowly approaching:

  • Mass Effect 2 (82 votes) -- Winner!
  • Mass Effect 1 (42 votes)

This week we take on another series debate that will make many readers roll their eyes, and even I expect a Fallout 3 massacre to be inevitable, but that's still no reason to assume Fallout 3 is better just because it's newer and larger. There are some valid arguments against Fallout 3 which need to be discussed before casting a vote. Such as the debate that Fallout 3 was less mature and morally ambiguous as its predecessors. And also the very compelling argument that Fallout 3 was incredibly buggy, even for months and months after its release. Are these just chinks in the armor? Or enough to slay the beast? That's for you to decide!

Leave no concept or design aspect untouched, weigh all options, and check out what other points are being brought up in the comments before casting a vote! Which of the Fallout games is the best, and why? What sets it apart from the other games in its series? Sell me on the idea! Get me stoked to see it compete in the tournament! Give it some serious thought, share your reasoning with all of us, and then check back next week to see how your game did!

Fallout 1 was the most polished and most innovative of the three by far. I still love all of them though.

Fallout 1 was the only one I beat. 2's start was...well...Temple? What. D: And I'll play 3 sometime before we all die.

I'm going to have to voTE Fallout 2.

But yeah the start to Fallout 2 is one of the worst in RPG history. Not as bad as Arena though. I did like Fallout 3 quite a bit, but Fallout 2 is the one I would hold up and say "Look here, Fallout"

Fallout 3 revamped the series, made it less boring and more fun. Less grinding and much more replayability. Fallout 3 gets my vote.

It has to be fallout 1. It was revolutionary at the time and stands up even today. Great story and gameplay. It took the concepts from Origin's Wasteland and made it into a polished cult classic.

I really enjoyed fallout 3 though. It was one of the best RPGs I have played in recent memory.

Although Fallout1 blew my mind when my dad bought it around easter when I was a kid.

Fallout 2, while it had its horrible starting point as Onyx mentioned, it was quite possibly one of the most in-depth and freedom driven RPG's I have ever played next to DaggerFall and Morrowind. Its complexity was not its only shining star either.. the story, the depth of dialog and the RPG Mechanics were corner stones to what gave Fallout its name.

Matching it to Fallout 3.. Fallout 3, while fun, was severely watered down compared to the originals. And no this is not an old Fanboy who is angry with Fallout 3 because its a different play style.. no not at all, I enjoyed Fallout 3 for what it was worth. But compared to Fallout 1, and more so Fallout 2, it had nowhere near the depth of story or RPG Mechanics.

Unlike Fallout 3.. being an evil asshole had its punishments and rewards. If you were a marked man and were truly the evil of the universe, you could not walk into any town you wanted and trade with whoever you wanted without getting shot by almost every person living in that town. Your world was limited to the other discarded waste in the world.

Many of the core RPG elements such as Traits, and the initial SPECIAL setup also made a HUGE impact on the players experience. You literally had a whole new experience with new dialog and new stories depending on how you built your character, far more than Fallout 3 offered, which Fallout 3 didn't even have the trait system (thank god New Vegas will! along with many other elements missing form Fallout 3).

If you really want a more in-depth explanation as to how the originals were compared to Fallout 3.. read this.

Yeah, I am voting for Fallout 3. It was a big world, worth exploring in combined RPG and FPS in a way I really enjoyed. Not because it's the newest, but because I just really liked it.

Fallout 2. It took pretty much everything that was good about the first game and cranked it up to eleven. Fallout 3 is good on its own, but it's not in the same league.

Fallout 3 gets my vote. It was the first in the series I played. I live near Baltimore, so the layout in Fallout 3 was awesome/familiar. Fallout Tactics was pretty good, too. I'm psyched for both New Vegas and the upcoming MMO.

Fallout 1 was a great game, but too short and suffered from a lot of issues for managing your squadmates. I never really felt too attached to the NPCs in the first game because of that. Though the main quest is epic.

Fallout 2 is definitely the best one in the series for me, It's so so much longer than the first game and has so many tiny little sidequests and easter eggs that everytime I replay the game I still feel that I find something new. There are still more than a few items I don't know what to do with (perhaps because they were never finished. . Radscorpion Purse?) The combat taunts are delightful, referencing so many pop culture and gaming sources it's great. Cassidy's "I wish I had a limit break. ." Also the magic eightball? I can't count how many times I used that to decide what to do in the game. I've beaten fallout 2 so many times, and the different ways of playing end up for such a different experience. Playing as a stupid character? Or the Ripper? Pump everyone full of superstims to kill them?

I hate Fallout 3. I think it's a shoddy re-skinning of oblivion's repetitive gameplay, WITH GUNS!

No disrespect to Fallout 1 or 2, because those are fantastic games, but Fallout 3 I think poses as a clear winner. It is an epic adventure upon epic adventures. There has not been a single console game that I have sunk that much time into, not even Oblivion.

... okay, maybe Final Fantasy II on the SNES.

I'm torn between 1 and 2, but ultimately, I'll have to go with Fallout 2 just solely on mechanics and what was added to the game over the first. I really enjoyed the NPC Allies (Especially John "I wish I had a limit break!" Cassidy). Also, Having a car was pretty boss, even if it would eat up all my Enegery and Microfusion Cells like popcorn.

I don't know if anyone else shared this sentiment, but making it an FPS(at least as default) and all the fixings that came with leaving from the isometric viewpoint made it seem more real to me. I know things I did in Fallout 3 definitely affected me more than the other two. I'll never forget how, after saving Red in the Bigtown quests, I forgot to give them any skills. Later, when I thought I needed to talk to them to find Little Lamplight, I came back to find every single person slaughtered. It really made me think about my mistakes and how I could prevent that kind of thing from happening again.

Fallout 3 takes it here not just it is one next-gen systems, but also because, unlike its predecessors, the first-person view and better graphics help put you totally into the world of fallout, and captivated you to feel the moral weight of your decisions. You could say the first two were fantastic in the narrative, and great in the way they created the Fallout world, but fallout 3 takes all of that, and makes it into something on a much larger scale. I really think that Fallout 3 made the story ten times better, thus making the Fallout world better.

I'll have to vote Fallout 2. Though Fallout 1 was the game that really brought new horizons to the cRPG and simply BLEW MY MIND... after replaying Fallout 1 for the millionth time recently I can really say that the scope of Fallout 2 dwarfs the first one in comparison. While Fallout 1 is probably a tighter package, Fallout 2 is just huge, and the endless possibilities to affect the outcome of the ending via actions in different towns (all inter-related, especially with Redding) was just amazing. That, and New Reno is possibly my favourite place I've ever visited in a video game.

Fallout 2 all the way.

Fallout 3's expansive world was neat, but the writing was... really lacking. So it doesn't count as a Fallout game for me... just a fun little post-apocalyptic romp.

Fallout 2. Fallout 2 will win by far. It took everything great from the first one and added onto it to make an even better game. Fallout 3 was a great game but not a contender for the best Fallout. Sorry, Bethesda.

Haven't played any of them except for Fallout 3 so that's where my vote lands. Though looking up anything about fallout it seems that a lot of people who played the original two unanimously hate three.

Fallout 3 was a blast and I spent around 4 months off and on playing through the game and seeing how different choices affected things.

No doubt I'll get beaten into the ground, but my vote goes to Fallout 3. I have played all 3, but Fallout 3 was the only one that really held my interest, and it held it hard, because Fallout 3 is easily my favourite game to date... at least until New Vegas comes along.

While I loved all three of these games, I would have to say Fallout 2 is the best, despite its many bugs (so many scripting issues). First, it was a much bigger world than Fallout 1 and an over-all better story. Second, the game mechanics (i.e. the use of S.P.E.C.I.A.L.) of both Fallout 1 and 2 were vastly superior to its use in Fallout 3. Don't get me wrong I like the new direction Bethesda has taken Fallout and look very much forward to New Vegas. However, Fallout 2 gets my vote as best in show.

I came I saw and came again then blew up Megaton in HD then I came again. And enjoyed every second of coming back for more. Oh yeah I liked being evil for one quest then redeeming myself somehow through the rest of it. Gotta love black and white karma in games. Fallout never really sparked my interest trying to play that and the second one just really didn't have the same affect over me when playing (and I love older games) it was the turn based system I think I never gave it a decent chance.

Played all three, but if I have to pick one, it's got to be 3. Bethesda took what was essentially a dead IP and gave it life again. If that's not a true Wasteland Survival story, I don't know what is.

Fallout 3 for me. The switch to 1st pov made it more accessible and immersive. I felt like I could get lost in F3's world.

I played it guns blazing the first time out then decided to try more stealth or alternate methods to completing objectives the second time out. I payed full retail for the CE and would do it again in an instance. I wish I could get this much replayabilty out if most other games.
I hope Bethesda's next Fallout features improved animations. I felt that was the game's weakest point.

I recently replayed it and pretty much completed most of the game without firing a shot. Not only that but I was rewarded handsomely with xp for my pacifist playing style so that I did not need to kill things to level up. The great amount of freedom that games offers is what makes it so special.
