But yeah the start to Fallout 2 is one of the worst in RPG history. Not as bad as Arena though. I did like Fallout 3 quite a bit, but Fallout 2 is the one I would hold up and say "Look here, Fallout"
I really enjoyed fallout 3 though. It was one of the best RPGs I have played in recent memory.
Although Fallout1 blew my mind when my dad bought it around easter when I was a kid.
Nothing like celebrating the life of Jesus by blowing chunks out of children in Shady Sands.
Matching it to Fallout 3.. Fallout 3, while fun, was severely watered down compared to the originals. And no this is not an old Fanboy who is angry with Fallout 3 because its a different play style.. no not at all, I enjoyed Fallout 3 for what it was worth. But compared to Fallout 1, and more so Fallout 2, it had nowhere near the depth of story or RPG Mechanics.
Unlike Fallout 3.. being an evil asshole had its punishments and rewards. If you were a marked man and were truly the evil of the universe, you could not walk into any town you wanted and trade with whoever you wanted without getting shot by almost every person living in that town. Your world was limited to the other discarded waste in the world.
Many of the core RPG elements such as Traits, and the initial SPECIAL setup also made a HUGE impact on the players experience. You literally had a whole new experience with new dialog and new stories depending on how you built your character, far more than Fallout 3 offered, which Fallout 3 didn't even have the trait system (thank god New Vegas will! along with many other elements missing form Fallout 3).
If you really want a more in-depth explanation as to how the originals were compared to Fallout 3.. read this.
Fallout 2 is definitely the best one in the series for me, It's so so much longer than the first game and has so many tiny little sidequests and easter eggs that everytime I replay the game I still feel that I find something new. There are still more than a few items I don't know what to do with (perhaps because they were never finished. . Radscorpion Purse?) The combat taunts are delightful, referencing so many pop culture and gaming sources it's great. Cassidy's "I wish I had a limit break. ." Also the magic eightball? I can't count how many times I used that to decide what to do in the game. I've beaten fallout 2 so many times, and the different ways of playing end up for such a different experience. Playing as a stupid character? Or the Ripper? Pump everyone full of superstims to kill them?
I hate Fallout 3. I think it's a shoddy re-skinning of oblivion's repetitive gameplay, WITH GUNS!
... okay, maybe Final Fantasy II on the SNES.
I weep for the people that are voting for Fallout 3. I thought the gamers on Destructoid were more seasoned than that. Whats next Lost Odyssey beating out Chrono Trigger? I guess every community has its noobs.
I don't know if anyone else shared this sentiment, but making it an FPS(at least as default) and all the fixings that came with leaving from the isometric viewpoint made it seem more real to me. I know things I did in Fallout 3 definitely affected me more than the other two. I'll never forget how, after saving Red in the Bigtown quests, I forgot to give them any skills. Later, when I thought I needed to talk to them to find Little Lamplight, I came back to find every single person slaughtered. It really made me think about my mistakes and how I could prevent that kind of thing from happening again.
Fallout 2 all the way.
Fallout 3's expansive world was neat, but the writing was... really lacking. So it doesn't count as a Fallout game for me... just a fun little post-apocalyptic romp.
Fallout 3 was a blast and I spent around 4 months off and on playing through the game and seeing how different choices affected things.
I came I saw and came again then blew up Megaton in HD then I came again. And enjoyed every second of coming back for more. Oh yeah I liked being evil for one quest then redeeming myself somehow through the rest of it. Gotta love black and white karma in games. Fallout never really sparked my interest trying to play that and the second one just really didn't have the same affect over me when playing (and I love older games) it was the turn based system I think I never gave it a decent chance.
Fallout 1 comes damn close though, not least because you can find the Tardis.
I played it guns blazing the first time out then decided to try more stealth or alternate methods to completing objectives the second time out. I payed full retail for the CE and would do it again in an instance. I wish I could get this much replayabilty out if most other games.
I hope Bethesda's next Fallout features improved animations. I felt that was the game's weakest point.
I recently replayed it and pretty much completed most of the game without firing a shot. Not only that but I was rewarded handsomely with xp for my pacifist playing style so that I did not need to kill things to level up. The great amount of freedom that games offers is what makes it so special.
Fallout Tactics! Bwahahahahahahahah~
Hey, at least I didn't say Brotherhood of Steel, right?
I'll stick with the 2nd one.
