Best: Baldur's Gate 2(I'm assuming we're including the expansions, which wouldn't change my choice, but may make for a second to think of whether I enjoyed the main game or the expansion more.)
BG2 had so many great improvements upon part 1. It was probably as good as a 2D rpg could look at the time and the particle and dynamic lighting effects were amazing. Even to this day the game looks beautiful. Not that part 1 didn't, but part 2 definitely is a milestone of 2D beauty that all rpg(possibly everyone really) programmers and game developers should look to. It also carried on the story from part 1 nicely, and flawlessly. Were it not for the interface improvement and graphical update, you'd think you were playing the same game.
Speaking of which, the interface was perfect! I never had a single complaint, and there was always far more depth to the game than I needed, but it was there if I wanted. The number of spells, abilities, job classes. Importing pics to be your character's profile. It was perfectly customizable.
The Story was flawless too. I haven't been so engrossed in a universe for a long time. The relationships between the characters grew, and there were so many characters, I still can't even say how many there were. The option to pursue romance, sans the cheesy(albiet welcomed) sex scenes of Dragon Age, was terrific. So much exploration and open-ended adventuring left for hours and hours of gameplay that never got boring for me.
The game was so good, everything great in Dragon Age is straight ripped from Baldur's Gate. Everything bad is where they started changing things.
BQ
Worst: ALL of the console ports. Those games were crap in comparison. They were ok for what they were, hack 'n slash action rpg's of the type you'd expect from new dev's. But they just totally raped the BG name and seriously did not need to be named BG in any way, shape or form(kinda like FF13.) They turned an rpg into an action-rpg for starters. Removed almost all the classes and details of character development.
Baldur's Gate 2 : Shadows of Amn was my favorite for the scale of it. It was just huge and it was seeing yourself evolve through that world, with unlimited options that made it so unique. It was definitly the best game of the decade to me.
Special mention to the expansion : it was one of the only D&D game to actually make my adventure feel epic. You are the son of a god and you fucking become one. God of War anyone? It had that feeling, and the different choices in the end, after your whole adventure, unless you role-played, I really felt that they weren't just 'right or wrong', it was 'what you thought was right. They were adapted to anyone.
Least Favorite : Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. Paled in comparison.
It's a shame that the demand for super good 3d graphics prevents developers from making games like baldur's gate these days. Dragon Age was fun, but it was missing that special something that really makes baldur's gate stand out for me.
And some of the fights were simply epic. One of my favorites was desperately fighting off an army of shadows at the entrance of a desecrated Sun temple. The first time I had to do that I was sacred out of my mind.
But then again I am old, and might have That said, I have like all of the incarnations, although the Dark Alliance games were far sillier (go ahead and TRY not to look at the boobs) they were pretty fun as far as ARPGs go. If I had to pick the worst it would be Dark Alliance 1, but there is still a lot of rat-squishing, barrel-busting, boob-looking-at fun in that game.
The romances were particularly fun and the NPC's sub plots were great. This game still stands out as one of my favorite games and I still have my copy.
This was one of the first games where I actually went to the Bioware forums and talked to people about the game. Every player had unique experiences which was really something for it's time!
As many have mentioned, it was the perfectly constructed characters that made it. I still get chills when I think of Irenicus nuking cowled wizards and shouting "YOU SHALL SUFFER! YOU SHALL ALL SUFFER!"
That villain was awesome, Jon Irenicus, and challanges Kefka and Luca Blight for best RPG villian. Best villain defeat as well.
Planescape Torment has a better story, but BG2 is the better game.
But I heard that Baldur's Gate 2 is the worst racing game ever made.
The characters, the setting, and the sheer epic scale of the adventure made it absolutely perfect. I haven't found another RPG that has felt nearly as amazing as BG2 was.
First off, the acceleration is clunky and unrealistic. When you hold down the mouse/accelerate button to reach the maximum speed, this speed is actually reached within the very first second of acceleration. And then when you stop holding down the mouse/accelerate button, you come to an almost instantaneous stop. This game is probably the first racing game that I've seen that lacks simple graded acceleration/deceleration physics.
In addition to that, and if that wasn't bad enough, no matter which character/vehicle you use, the speeds are identical across the board. Now, this might have been acceptable in some older games, but racing games these days make use of different vehicles with varying strengths and weaknesses. This adds a bit of depth to the game and forces you to adapt to different tracks based on the vehicle that you're using. Not so in Baldur's Gate. Here, every character/vehicle is identical to the other and choosing one comes down to merely an aesthetic preference.
The game is also an example of how innovation can go bad. The track design, while undeniably innovative, is also the worst that I've seen in any game. The tracks are riddled with really annoying shit tacked on for the sake of being the first game to implement the gimmick. Case in point: track obstacles that range from obtrusive foliage and buildings, to annoying NPC magicians (yes, fucking magicians) that throw shit at you in order to distract you. The tracks are also convoluted to the point of being more like mazes than anything else, and the twists and turns of the tracks can sometimes be so abrupt as to come to a fucking 90 degree angle.
I haven't played the first one, but if Baldur's Gate II is any indication, this is one racing series to stay the fuck away from.
Thanks for the tip man! I just downloaded the trilogy mod. Now if I could only spare the 100-200 hours I would need to go through the entire trilogy again...
Jon Irenicus also is helped by being one of the villains that believes he is doing a good thing. Similar to Magneto or Dr. Doom, as a relate-able villain is more compelling than a simple evil for the sake of evil monster. As seen in Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants or Doom's passion for Latveria.
A steady escalation of believable consequences (except for the shoehorned visit from the Icewind Dale gang.) Beginning with the kidnapping of Imoen, a trip to an insane asylum for mages, a frantic battle through the elven city Suldanessellar, and culminating with a battle for a soul in Hell. These events serve to pull the player along at breakneck pace.
It would be unfair to leave the extensive replay-ability of the series unmentioned. With different romances and different classes presenting players with new experiences every playthrough, it's common to play through the game twice or more. Plus the Still thriving mod community adding new characters, loot, storylines and more. Even an unofficial official patch from David Gaider, adding content that unfortunately couldn't make it in the release.
Baldur's Gate 1 did present the player with the awe of stumbling through an increasingly epic story. It seemed to more closely resemble an actual table top gaming session. I've yet to experience a story unfolding from such a small beginning in the walled city of Candlekeep to it's eventual conclusion spanning the entire sword coast, at least in WRPG's. Some people I know prefer the more open wandering feeling of BG1, I however appreciate the tightness of scope provided by BG2.
Because of that and mostly the improved gameplay Baldur's Gate II:Shadows of Amn should represent the series.
Also Tales of the Sword Coast expansion for BG1 is meh, it's mostly combat and doesn't really do justice to the game that preceded it, and is clearly sub par to it's successor.
Perhaps this should have been my first c-blog, I didn't realize I had so much to say.
Potentially the best game of all time.
Why is it better than DA:O? Besides the combat consisting of two more players with much more/better direct control, the NPC's were far better.
That is what really made BG2 for me, the romances, subplots, and incredible party interactions are still beyond that of any game to date. Well, that I know of. Every Bioware/Obsidian game has tried, but has yet to, surpass it.
also, Grande C maakes a good case for Irenicus. He is definitely a better boss than the Archdemon, and Lan, while interesting, doesn't compare either.
Basically BG2 took everything in BG1 and made it better. DA:O took everything in BG2, took away the D&D licence, streamlined it, and added better/more voice acting. I LOVED DA:O, and even though I found myself enjoying many of the 'watered down' features, it didn't live up to my hopes because it didn't match it's predecessor.
Oi, I wanna replay it so badly, but to many games I want to play are coming out. Anyone really get into the multiplayer? that is something I always wanted to do but was kinda to young to be able to at the time.
And I'm guessing this doesn't count other Infinity engine games? Icewind Dale deserves some love too...
Just so much...so much stuff to do. And lets not forget Jon Irenicus. One of the coolest villains I have ever had the pleasure of over coming.
BG2 hands down all the way.
Why? Much improvements, eye friendly graphics, much MUCH! better worked out NPCs. The romancing... specially Viconia. The german localisation was superb. Imho even better then the original voice overs.
This game is one of my favorite games ever. I hate you now. You wasted another 100hours of my life, because i have to start my 4th complete playthrough
Worst of the series? Well, if we aren't counting the console games, then Tales of the Sword Coast. Of course, that's only poor in comparison to the brilliance of Baldur's Gate 2. You should really have made this debate about the Infinity Engine games, so we could at least have a contest between BG2 and PS:T.
They must be killed for their treachery.
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, of course.
The first one with or without expansion was a great game. It was not an epic tale, Bioware constantly make since, and this makes it even better. But BG1 lacked few things, that made BG2 gameplay better. There are great mods that port BG1 to the BG2 updated engine, what makes every entry in the series great. But As it is, BGII was the most interesting tale about the Bhaalspawn.
BG1 is good
BG2 is the best RPG of all time
BG:DA games are hack/slashers that are BG in setting only and don't count
shadow of the colossus hasnt been out for that long
is it a crime to think baldurs gate 2 was crap?
ok i didnt gave the game much of a chance, but those first 10 minutes were agonizingly dull and slow, full of useless conversations
Worst Thing: Okay, this is easy. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH. YOU MUST GATHER YOUR PARTY BEFORE VENTURING FORTH.
However, as much as I loved that game, it was Planescape: Torment that sealed the deal. That game was poetry.
They must be killed for their treachery.
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, of course."
I liked nearly every BG game so far and because of the comment above I choose
BG: Dark Alliance as my favorite :-P
