Next Generation is reporting that GAME, the evil band of megalomaniacs who acquired Gamestation and threaten the UK with its perverse monopoly, is now viewing the online realm with envious eyes and draws its plans for a digital download service, clearly bored of selling secondhand games that don't work and offering you a poisoned bag of pennies and earwigs for your traded in goods.
To be fair, the service doesn't look too bad, which is a huge compliment for anything that British companies attempt online. Offering two packages, GAME is due to offer a range of 116 titles for £6.95 per month, or an 'Ultimate Collection' deal for a monthly £12.95 that provides 149 games with more recent titles available. Customers will be able to download and play whatever they like, with titles like Warhammer: Dawn of War and Spellforce 2 on the books, and GAME claims that new products will be available every month.
Yet, they are still fiends. You heard me.

The download service looks promissing! A lot of companies are doing it and it's about time game did it too. I think the next service they should supply is a rental service and use their pre-owned games to start it off! I just signed up to gameflirt.co.uk which is a rental service for £9.99 a month unlimited. If game did it and I got points on my card however I would of gone with them.
Of course you do. :)
As long as Play & Shopto don't get taken over I'll be happy.
Here's hoping they just let Gamestation run as it always has.
The majority of managers do not have the first clue or interest in the products, they expect exploitation of their staff and customers at any given opportunity, they charge too much for their games in order to push the pre-owned section into a more favorable position and they will happily whore their whole company out to EA whenever the next sub-standard installment of a lifeless franchise is released.
This is the first I had heard about Gamestation being bought and I have to say it really worries me. I have been loyal to Gamestation since they opened a branch near me 3 years ago due to the goopd prices they offer on trade-ins and the fact they seemed fairly independant. Thankfully though, HMVs game section seems to be getting better and better all of the time, in fact, in my opinion: over the last few years it has grown to be a more legitimate video games retailer than Game has been since it was sold off by Electronics Boutique.
To keep on subject though, Game having an online download presence is not something to worry about. The online market will always be less easy to monopolise as it doesn't have the same physical location constraints that a high street does. And if they're offering good games for a low price I definatly won't be compaining; hopefuly it will spur Steam to lower it's UK rates!
128 Games to download and play - £6.95 per month
165 Games to download and play - £12.95 per month
(im not associated with this company at all!)
gamestation does focus on retro as well as current, you couldnt even buy a psx in game.
what i loved about gamestation was how much fun it was to work thier, the more laidback attiuited we took compaired to game. but games unrivaled domination of the uk gaming market is unreal!
im sorry but after working for gamestation, i am highly unlikly to ever really approve of game. simply because im having a very hard time accepting thier current domination on the UK market. but with online market as well? its scary how much game will take over.
Either way, Gamestation has always operated in the red, GAME just bought out their debts.
I'm glad to hear that everyone in your store is clued up on their games as this has not been my experience. Now, this depends on how you define "clued up"...I define it as having a wide knowledge accross all platforms. Most people I worked with only played PS2 and a lot of them used to physically tell customers to not buy Nintendo products as it was a dead system (this was literally just after the release of the Gamecube, when it was actually doing quite well).
And to say GAME are more financially successful is a bit of a weak argument; Tescos and Nestle are financially successful but are still baby killing nazis (sorry if I am being a bit "Daily Mail").
Before I forget, just to mention: If you are lucky enough to have an Eplay branch in your city, I highly recommend it as it is a comparitavely small company who actually care about games and give slightly better trade ins than GAME. I don;t work for them, don't worry, but I thought it was interesting that no one had mentioned them :)
gamestation has been on sale for a long time, but thats not supprising, blockbuster US has said that 'it is focused on two things: growing its share of the store-based rental business and growing Blockbuster Online' rather than on the video game chain. Blockbuster looks to be trying to rescue itself from a deepening financial crisis. Gamestaion has flourished well under blockbuster, so no wonder blockbuster are trying to sell it off as its possibly on of thier best assists.
it was a smart move on GAMES part, not only did they buy out competiton, but they have all needs of the market covered. with GAME and gamestation appealing two different markets. it will be a silly move on GAMES part to get rid of gamestation. thier is obvisouly a market for what gamestation offers.
You don't get 'pressured' online to reserve your copy of HALO3 by some teenager with all the charm and charisma of cat aids.
You generally only pay an extra £5 max to buy a newly released game from a reasonable high street shop rather than online. Personally I see it as a good investment to get to play it as soon before I go out for a Friday evening drink. Oh and I always check shops on the thursday for street-breakers!
I exercised my (then) right to take the game back and I went and bought it elsewhere. GAME are the scum of the UK games industry and their perpetuation of the second hand market will eventually ruin it, for consumers, shops, but most importantly developers - who I happen to be very proud of in the UK, becasue it seems to be on of the few things we can still do properly.
FUCK OFF GAME.
You don't need to be a git about it. 2 out of 3 game stations I have been to have had bad staff who don't know anything about the products they are selling so they are not this AMAZING haven you make them out to be.
GAME brought them out, they must be doing something right? Most of the game stores I have been too have knowledgeable staff who are helpful and can deal with most questions I ask. Why not apply to get a job at a company who is obviously doing very well for its self right now!
Anyway its not about GAME or gamestation its about your local! If your lucky it is a good store. It's a shame you haven't had a good game store.
very good point regarding each store having its own strengths and weaknesses; such is the nature of all retail branches. Thus you can only base a general opinion on the general ethos of the company.
GAME's ethos is appeal to the lowest common denominator and to side with publishers who share that same interest. Unfortunaly, living in the UK, more often than not the fact a company is successful is usually an indicator that it's managed, ran and funded by baby killing nazis.
BABY KILLING NAZIS.
I can only go by my experience with more than one GAME, and my experience has been that none of their secondhand games work properly (seriously, I've bought several from GAME and every single one was fucked up) and their staff are incompetant boobs. Adding to this the whole "pulling Manhunt from the shelves" deal which I will never let go of and you have a company that does jack shit for real gamers.
On the flipside, I've never had a bad thing to say about any of the Gamestations I've been in, and I've visited more than a few over the years.
There's a short jerk who used to in the Gloucester store who obviously had a short guy complex.
Oh I thought you were trying to be a git :p I just want to say git :p
Well if you have bad experience fair enough but so much game hate :o
