Game Room hits Xbox LIVE, totally borked (Update) photo

Microsoft's neat little virtual arcade space, "Game Room," has hit Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows today. That's the good news, I guess.

Here's the bad news: Users are reporting that it just doesn't work. Reports are coming in from all over the Internet (and verified by me) that you simply can't load the damned thing on the Xbox 360; the progress bar gets stuck. So right now, I guess it's just "Room," right? The Windows version is broken, too, giving users an installation error.

Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson says it's aware of the problem, and that it's being investigated. But in the meantime, here's an awesome Xbox 360 workaround discovered by a NeoGAF forum user:

1. Sign in
2. Load Game Room and press start.
3. When Loading hangs, press Guide, press X to sign out.
4. Remove network cable/usb for Wifi.
5. Sign in with profile.
6. Press Start and press B when it says you must be signed in XBL to use all features.
7. Room loaded, it asks you if you want to sign into XBL to get most of features (Note this is the second time its asked you). Attach Wifi/Network cable and wait till you get the green light (On Wifi).
8. Connect to Live.
9. Play.

Yeah, no thanks. I'll wait for the fix. I don't need to play Centipede that bad.

Microsoft’s Game Room Broken on Release [Negative Gamer]

[Update: All fixed up now. Give it a shot; it's actually kind of cool.]

You'd think they would have tested this a bit better before it went live. I'll be grabbing this once they've got the bugs worked out.

I grabbed it this morning. When I went it, it told me I'd need to download game packs. I selected the option to do that...and was taken to a window that only had the option for "More Information." Took a moment to figure out that the game packs are downloaded from the Games Downloads screen on the dashboard.

After getting that straightened out, I was able to get in. But I couldn't download any games; the option was there, but it wouldn't do anything. I could only decorate my game rooms...which is as pointless as it sounds. I was amused when I received three achievements for adding crap to a room and setting up a theme.

I did try demoing Adventure, but it just sat at the "1" screen. Vaguely remember that, when I used to play it on the ol' 2600, I'd have to flip a switch or something to get it started. I had to get to work, so I didn't mess around with it past that point.

I can't even log into the Games for Windows Live client.

That's hilarious. DLC and downloadable games won't become, "mainstream," until these companies consistently get it right the first time.

I can't even remember all the past issues I've had to deal with. Most recently was the Dragon Age DLC borking.

I've been wondering why anyone cares about Game Room. The concept just seemed....stupid.

To find this problem all Microshaft had to do was have one of its employees test this at home, before it was publicly released.

Yeah because the Xbox 360 is the leader in digital content delivery. Over 25 million Steam subscribers would like to have a word with you.

It's also broken on GFWL. It refuses to download the DLC required to play the game on my end, but I've heard it won't even download the game for some other people.

The odd few people who have gotten in on the PC, it aparrently attempts to delete your avatar and replace it with another one.

@Corduroy Turtle

I agree...somewhat. I was willing to give it a go and play a game or two. It would probably have more appeal if you could visit your friend's arcade and play a game with them.

As it stands now, it's just a glorified emulator that you can decorate.

My wife...who is not much of a gamer would probably get the most enjoyment out of this besides my nostalgia factor. But anything to get her gaming more so she won't complain when I want to play MY games is a plus!

real games being what, exactly? Call of Crap? Gears of Douche?

Help me out a little here, because as far as I can tell, you wouldn't have any of the above dickery if it wasn't for these games.

Since Sexualchocolate isn't here yet, I've decided to fill in for him. Temporarily, of course.

Here's the workaround I used. Much less of a hassle:

1. Sign in
2. Load Game Room and press Start
3. When loading hangs, hold down Guide button, press Up twice to turn off 360
4. Turn on PS3
5. Play MAG

Weird problem for me. I downloaded the Game Room and game packs. It started up great the first time. All my games were being displayed properly. Then I pressed start to look at the main menu and when I pressed start again I was in edit mode and all my games were missing. It wouldn't even let me place them back.

Other than that, the 4 minutes I got to see Game Room in it's full noisy glory were great. :)

The time warp thing makes me sad though. But that's neither here nor there. Okay, so it's here and there, but...ahh...nevermind.

I forgot to mention that I went into "My Collection" mode (or something like that) while I was in the pause menu.

Also, I exited and re-entered the game to see if that would fix my disappearing cabinet problem, but then the game froze on the loading screen. :)

Hurray! Now I can pay $3 a game for emulated 30 year old Atari 2600 games! How about some later 80's and 90's games or perhaps allowing you to play your LIVE arcade games in this? Severely lackluster showing Microsoft.

Piss-poor concept, Piss-poor execution.

This is what MS has been wasting their resources on? Up until the announcement I was really excited to think perhaps Rare was working on a new IP that would be fun for hardcore and casual fans alike. Nuts and Bolts was not a good game, but the characters and environment were really really creative and fun.

I pictured a virtual theme park taking control of your avatar, and playing carnival games, ride, attractions, all with fun gamey elements. That would have been brilliant.

Instead we get this pig-shit. MS really stifles creativity. Thank God I bought a PS3. My fiancée asks me to play LittleBigPlanet all the time, she never suggests we play xbox. Where the friggen new IPs MS? No one asked for this shit! No one wants it.

First off they have acquired the licenses to 1000 roms so far, each week they will be releasing 7 new games (friday is the predicted day). They are also seeking more companies to come aboard and im sure they will, the original concept was for a Sega Dreamcast Emulator and the main developer said why not an everything emulator, the dreamcast may be coming down the road. And You can visit your friends arcade, you can play any game in his arcade once for free if you dont own it, then buy it for yours if you wish.. If you beat the high score on his machine a banner will hang on it with your gamertag until someone beats the score.
All this info I got from listening to Major Nelsons Latest podcast when he interviewed the Develepor of the game.

At about 10:00am I had no show-stopping problems downloading, starting up, or using Game Room or the games. I believe the initial issue was only a XBL server kwirk that was quickly resolved.

I've posted lots of issues and concerns to Major Nelson myself but what dissapoints me by far more is the excessive amount of hate that exists on most forums, hate primarily focused at MS.

Actually it is still kind of borked. Challenges that are sent cannot be played, because they disappear. Challenges I have created are flaky and are there once minute and not the next. Winning challenges seems futile as you get the "Cannot connect to Game Room server" error and it cannot save your high score, thus not counting for the challenge, or the achievements.
