You buy a premium computer like an Apple MacBook PRO and you get a shitty little booklet that just about manages to tell you how to replace the hard drive and that you can't replace the battery yourself. If you want to learn everything about the machine and the OS it comes with you have to shell out extra.
Fuck this. I want a complete printed reference if this is supposed to be a professional piece of kit.

Is it to save pennies or is to be "greener"? Cause I'm seeing it as both, even though I'm sure its more-so to be stingy while they keep making us pay the same price regardless.
It's to save pennies. While Borderlands 2 had a color manual -- albeit very small -- it at least said it was to save money and not save the environment. EA says it's for green bullshit. SUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE.
I remember when I got my copy of the special edition of SimCity 2000 many years ago, it came with a 100-page manual that included artwork and bits of poetry. Those days are long gone now, and while I appreciate that using less packaging is more environmentally friendly, it would be nice to get digital versions of similar content in today's games. There's no reason why a PDF of the manual, in full colour, can't be included on the disc.
I know I'm weird about this. I still buy albums on CD, for crying out loud. I might even be a bit of a hoarder. But if publishers won't let me maintain a physical library, then at least let me maintain the next best thing with a digital library.

Don't worry guys, I'm sure they'll have to include some sort of insert for online pass codes! And all this extra money they're making can go towards making multiplayer modes for previously single-player games! To account for said online passes! Game publishers so get us.
I would hope that most publishers continue to offer more and more Steelbooks for those who want a meaningful physical package and let the masses have at it for the cheap and flimsy plastic cases that they are all turning into now. The hell do I need a shitty case with holes and abysmally thin plastic to 'protect' a disc? Give me a damn steelbook with forever designs.
For the better end of this shift in low quality packaging I've switched whatever games I've gotten to the old better cases from earlier in the generation, I'm glad the 3DS packaging is done well to not make the case not-protecting of the cart inside. I wonder though how the WiiU will approach the plastic reduction, the way the Wii games release now, with those huge gaping holes around the disc's placement and the disgusting recycling logo cutout under the manuals, I've had to swap those as well for the last few games I got for the system.

One further step onto the digital only releases. Next step is no manuals and no disk, just open the box and get a download code... I don't mind buying digital, as long as they are priced accordingly.
While I love lavish packaging as much as anyone (I devastated when they stopped releasing PC games in those enormous cardboard boxes that were many times larger than they needed to be) I think this is probably a good move. I'm reaching the point now where I've no more space for bulky game cases, so most of my stuff is stored flat in disc folders now.

Remember the good ol' days when games came with big fat manuals? You would get you game, pop it in your system (no installs or updates.) Then when it was time for bed, you would lay there and read about your new game. Maybe you even took it to school with you to read at lunch or on the bus. It was almost like playing them game away from your system in a way.
I miss those times. The few games I've got on this current Gen that came with full color manuals made me happy as a pig in shit. Sure it might be cheaper, But the gamers take notice if you take the time and money to go that extra mile.

As a UK gamer, my shelves like the lighter game boxes without massive books with 8 languages in them bending the shelves in the middle.
However I miss the weight of game cases, made me feek like I was actually getting something for my £40. Now it just feels like i've brought a £3 bargain bin dvd from Tesco

I assume those savings will be passed on to the loyal customers, thus increasing competition between publishers, right? *sarcasm*
Meh, I might as well go full digital. Boxes without anything but the DVD feel...off. Not like it's much of a hassle to switch, since I barely touch my consoles, save for my Vita.
I never look at game manuals but I feel better knowing they are there. It's irrational but there you go.
I fine with no manual. I'd prefer everything being digital anyways, so that I don't end up with more clutter 10 years from now, as well as the environmental benefits.
As for them passing the savings on to the customer, I think the amount of discount that they could offer would probably feel insulting to some people. Even if you include the box, disc, cover insert and shipping into the discount, you're probably still looking at less than $5.
