Game industry sees biggest sales slump in nine years photo

With the NPD results rolling in, it's been made clear that things are not all roses and gumdrop rainbows in the land of videogames, with the industry seeing a fourth consecutive month of decline.

Hardware, software and accessory revenues are down $1.17 billion from June, seeing a 31% downturn. A slump this bad hasn't been seen since September 2000. I'm not going to blame ridiculous over-saturation of the market during an overall economic downturn, but now would be a good time to push that particular point.

"The video games industry realised a significant decline when compared to June 2008," states NPD analyst Anita Fraizer. "The first half of the year has been tough largely due to comparisons against a stellar first half performance last year, but still, this level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry.

"This is one of the first months where I think the impact of the economy is clearly reflected in the sales numbers. While the aggregate of content may not be as strong as what we saw in the first half of last year, and while the consumer base willing to spend dollars on hardware at the current price points may be thinning, the size of the decline could also point to consumers deferring limited discretionary spending until a big event (must-have new title, hardware price cut) compels them to spend."

Looks like Bobby Kotick might want to hold off on buying another gilded elephant, at least for a few more months.

Well I haven't bought a retail game since February when Killzone 2 released since most new games are $70 CDN. Do they not realize that people won't spend if the prices are that high!?

But I've been pumping in tons of money into the PlayStation Store. If only the analyst could see how much these companies are actually making...

As the console cycle moves along, you're going to see the s-shaped adoption curve for hardware start having a serious effect on year-over-year comps. Do you have a breakout of hardware versus software declines?

I'd be spending more if the games weren't all the same, didn't cost over $50 for new titles, half the game wasn't locked DLC that I gotta pay for to get a full experience, and anti-piracy measures didn't completely ruin the experience by making the entire product feel like the most anal retentive thing ever.

Gamers are economy proof. Games aren't, especially when the industry is built upon the "all ighty oller" as pascuz so profoundly put it.

@celicacrazed:

This article talks about Xbox Live sales a bit, which, in line with what you were saying, appear to be holding up really well.

Maybe if 90% of games today didn't result in a steaming pile of sh*t, and developers/publishers would make something of quality people wouldn't be so worried about forking over some of their hard earned money for something that could very easily be terrible.

I know that in recession, entertainment usually gets a boon due to people wanting to forget their troubles. But that reaches a saturation point, too, when you realize "Fuck, I JUST CAN'T be buying these games."

I think we're starting to reach that point.

Jesus... with the way they cry about how well the used game industry is doing, you'd think they'd learn people don't want to pay 60 bucks for a video game any more. They always said it would stay 60 because they can get away with it... I think those days are coming to an end

I think that Fallout 3 has completely spoiled me. I'll probably neeed to buy 3-5 games to get the same ammount of content as F3, which I will do at a reduced price.

I'd expect to see XBL and PSN download sales increasing as people are attracted to the cheaper price points of downloadable games during the current economic downturn.

I wonder how the holiday season will go. It's not like there have been any real must have games lately, but then again.. they weren't there last year either.

I've been slightly affected to the point where I subscribed to Gamefly. It became a little much at one point, but I'll still buy games that I'll keep for the long run, like Blazblue.

I'm sure the holidays will be kind of an exception because of all the hotness coming out.

The last time I bought a full retail priced game was probably back in November. I simply can't afford to pay $70+ Canadian for games anymore. This is why I've been buying nothing but used games. The games industry is going to have to smarten up about their pricing schemes if they want to keep sales thriving.

There are few new things in Q1 and Q2 this year... Last year, up to this point we had games like GTA 4 and MGS 4... There is nothing this year to match those releases, which should explain the difference.

These months are usually slow, which is why last year is hardly a good comparition.

Didn't they have a 17% increase in price for a retail game about, oh, I dunno, 4-6 months ago?

Normally I'll buy a game or two a month, now, I've bought 1 in 6 months.

A game used to cost me just under $70 CDN, now it costs just under $80, CDN.

Overnight. So, I feel no sympathy for these guys.

Huh, downturn, like it is actually a suprise when you look at the prices.
Let me see, I bought my last full priced retail game(70 effing Euros = 90$), humm... last year. No wonder the sales have slumbered.

Bah! I've got plenty of cash to blow on games, but I haven't bought anything new since Punchout. Why? Because I could care less about all the summer titles this year. Infamous? Pass. Prototype? Pass. UFC? Fight Night? The Conduit? Sorry, but this summer has been a steady flow of mediocrity. Just because I've got disposable income doesn't mean I'm desperate.
