Game Debate to the Death! Xbox 360 VS Wii VS PS3 photo

Last week was one of the larger game debates of the year, with a wide variety of games submitted by the Dtoid Army for consideration. Dozens of games received five or less votes, but when all the comments were tallied, five games stood above the rest, with a clear winner on top. The Dtoiders have spoken, here are the results:
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (35 votes) -- Winner!
  • Fallout 3 (24 votes)
  • Left 4 Dead (12 votes)
  • Lost Odyssey (8 votes)
  • Grand Theft Auto IV (7 votes)

This week we take one final break from our continuing theme of odd debate console-by-console tournaments, and move on to a debate about the actual consoles. Just as yesterday's Mind Teasers were about consoles, this week's debate is all about how the three most recent systems have done since their launches.

The Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii have all had their rocky moments in the past, but we've had more than enough time to get to know all three, take a taste, and figure out our preferred recipes for gaming. Each console has had plenty of time to work out its issues so it can stand and deliver. So which is standing the tallest right now? Or who has stood tall for the longest?

Which of the three newest consoles do you think has done the best since its launch, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some of your gaming friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Then we'll finally move on to the Xbox brackets of odd debates.

Bonus Question: What console would you label the worst of the three?

I rate systems on what they provide. So for worst system, the PS3. It doesn't have enough games to compete, even thought the Wi has more shoverlware than the Atari 2600, but it can't contend with the other two for being a system of win.

System of win vote ... *sigh* ... the 360. I hatez the Microsoft, but they have the bst system around for gamers right now. The Wii is thiiiiiiis close, though.

I'm baffled that people are still claiming that the PS3's game library lacks considering 95% of all games are cross platform.

PS3 gets my vote for it's improvement this year.
In-Game-XMB was added, Trophies were implemented, Rumble has returned, BluRay is now the HD physical medium standard, Home was launched (whether it's shit or not, they came through on a promise), multiplatform games are no longer sub-par, MGS4 is amazing, and LBP is amazing as well.

hmm.. worst console, let's see:

XBOX360: It breaks. LIVE costs money. MS Points. It breaks.
PS3: Needs more games. Graphics usually on par or worse than 360. Expensive. Home kinda sucks.
Wii: Limited online gameplay. Graphics showing their age. Friend codes. Wii Music

I'd argue the 360 is the worst, even though it's got plenty of good things going for it.

Best This Year: Playstation 3.
This year has had the best line up of Exclusive games, not limited to Metal Gear Solid 4, but also Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3 and of course, Littlebigplanet. It's also recieved a version of some of the Xboxes better games this year, including GTA4, Saints Row 2 and Devil May Cry 4.
Worst This Year: Wii
More gimmicks and no games of real substance outside Smash bro's. Even Kart Wii was poor. On a personal level, I've seen nothing I'd like to buy a Nintendo Wii for, where as I'd like to play Fable and Lost Odyssey on the 360.

I guess it should be noted that I only own a PS3, but I'm more than open to buying a new console should an absolutely must play game go Xbox exclusive ( I'd mention the Wii here, but I doubt the Wii will ever have a game that's a third of the quality of MGS4.)

1. PS3 - Should keep developers amused for years to come, And it's silent, amazing Blu-Ray and DVD upscaling abilities push it ahead. The only all-in-one option on the market, except a PC.

2. Wii - It's a gamecube. With waggle and balance. It's taken off like a rocket, and I'm glad I've had mine since launch. It's proven (as did the GameBoy) that you don't need high-def, if you have gameplay. Sure there's shovelware, but ignoring all that I still have over 40 titles, 10 of which I've completed (and I'm not one to complete games).

3. 360 - Technically inferior to the PS3, and with a reported still %13 failure rate (+1% disc scratching). It would be a fantastic middle option otherwise. Though I fear it will increasingly limit multi-plat games, the same way its predecessor crippled a lot of PC games (good bye Garret, Denton). Netflix is a step in the right direction, however its Microsoft, so you don't own the movies.

Well, I think all the consoles have been mediocre at best this gen. Sony have spread themselves too thin and seemingly have no clue how to handle their system. I hate Microsoft for too many reasons to list here, their hardware is garbage, and their community is overpopulated with pew pew people. The Wii...I had hope for the Wii, it was the first new gen console I picked up, and the first that I got rid of. The 5 games I bought for it the first year I had it were great, but now it has nothing to offer me, and hasn't since Smash Bros.

Winner: PS3. Free online, awesome games, sexy visage.

Loser: 360. I normally would give this to the Wii for sheer disappointment factor, but a 63% failure rating is an insult to me and those whom I consider peers. Fuck you Microsoft, fuck you in your ass.

Best: Xbox 360.

I got my 360 for Halo, my PS3 for MGS4, and a Wii for SSBB. I play alot of games that come out for the consoles thanks to Netflix and severe boredom. Anyway, It was a close race between PS3 and the 360. However, I must say the 360 did suprize me a lot more than I had expected. Dont get me wrong, I had a great time with my PS3. But there just werent that many good games for it. As for the Wii, well its best if I list what happened...

Buys a wii
Hooks it up
Cries
Buys Twilight Princess
Cries
Returns twilight Princess
Reserves SSBB
Gets SSBB
Plays SSBB
Cries
Beats SSBB
Cries some more
Sells Wii and all cames and controllers for $150
Uses $150 to buy Gears 2, Lost odyssey, and Culdcept Saga.
And they all lived happily ever after.

Im fairly surprised at the number of votes for the ps3. I personally own all 3 systems, and probably use my ps3 more than the wii and xbox combined. However, in terms of quality games (which is what these things are made for primarily), especially exclusives, the 360 seems to have the edge when we are talking about quality. Other than mgs4 there is no Halo or gears of war for the ps3. Sure uncharted, resistance, and lbp are great games, but none of those are the behemoth franchises in the gaming industry (yet any way). And while the online for the ps3 is free, xbox live is a much more cohesive experience, is more streamlined, well organized, and easy to use. I would say the downloadable game front is pretty much a tie, with both consoles offering unique and excellent games.

At this point the wii is a fucking joke. Not a single damn game came out that was for the real gamers after mario kart. The virtual console being the only reason for me to ever even turn my wii on. Sure nintendo is selling the damn thing like crazy, but I could care less if they turned Wii's into the currency of japan, if there aren't good games then it can eat my d*ck.

Overall though since launch, the xbox has def. been killing it. With a fairly steady stream of decent games after the first 9 months, the xbox has kept the hits coming. PS3 is a close second for me, but still needs to work on the exclusive games front, and give me some new blockbusters. WII IS THE WORST AND CAN DIE IN A FIRE. NINTENDO YOU HAVE FOREVER BETRAYED MY TRUST AND I WILL NOT BE WAITING IN LINE AT WALMART FOR 20 HOURS FOR WII2.

Worst: Wii, that white brick only gets switched on over here when nintendo sends an update email :p its like a 360 with a RRoD, sure it looks nice, but you just can't do anything fun with it :p

For the winner I'm going to go with the Wii. It's the console I spend the most time playing and the one I have the most games for. Yeah, that's right I own GOOD games. If people are still whining about lack of games for the Wii then I really don't know what to suggest. It seems that if you still hold that view then your likely to never change it and you're really a lost cause. Maybe if Nintendo step up the hype you'll pay attention, but honestly, when have they ever done that.

As for the "worst", I'm not even going to touch that. I play all three and enjoy all three. So I'll just pussy out of this mine trap and let everyone else decide.

All right... 360 wins among the hardcore crowd. No matter what excuses are dropped, you can't compare their game list. Yes, it has severe hardware failure rates, but they've worked to take care of it, and it's selling well(outside of in japan) despite all the negative press. The PS3 is a great media machine, loading it up with video files, upscaling DVD's quite nicely(360's playback is laughable...), and, of course, bluray. It has some incredible games, some with hugely loyal fanbases(MGS), but overall, even falls short to the Wii. Course, this could change in the coming year with 360's support of netflix, especially when compared to their horribly overpriced, tacked-on movie service. Now the Wii... oh god. Seriously, anyone who takes the time to go to a gaming website SHOULD NOT mention the wii as the best. Seriously. Nintendo has long abandoned you guys, get over it. Smash was fun, Galaxy was fun, Zelda was fun. Then what? Are you gonna eat up their gamecube rehashes? How bout Wii Music? With their heavy support coming from company's like Destineer, Bold, and DSI(ever heard of them? I wonder why not?), and even lacking decent support from major companies. Yes, No More Heroes does a lot of awesome things, but as a game, it's incomplete and broken. DON'T PUT SANDBOX IN IF YOUR GONNA HALF ASS IT!

Either way, overall I lean with 360, but I've really only been using my PS3 since I beat Gears. Valkyria Chronicles is the most amazing game on the system, and everyone who doesn't have it(especially after all the whining about how it doesn't have any jap rpg's) is stupid and should drive off a cliff.

Im an xbox 360 owner, however if you are asking for best console as in hardware then the PS3 wins, its a nice piece of kit!!
However if you are saying best gaming machine its the xbox360 hands down!!
Or if you are saying best innovative, then its the Wii.

I have no straight answers, life is not binary!

After reading recent news pieces, I now dislike PS3 much LESS than I used to... Knowing now the cost is/was still high due to the fact of the component quality & because of their own out-of-pocket monies they put into it. I can't dislike it anymore.

Still, looking at everything overall & as a gamer first, and an indie developer second.

Best: 360

Worst: Wii

Additionally, I can understand the love/hate thing sometimes with the 360. The Wii, though, is my this year's worst due to so little to offer, (in a challenging/game difficulty kind of way).

Lastly, I predict in the new year that the Wii WILL stop sucking as much in 2009, yet, it will still be _the_ defining console for the kitchen for many days to come.

In sum, I'm with Fronz, mostly, I think. LOL.

Mario Kart Wii blows everything the 360/PS3 have out of the water. Also Smash Bros Brawl, Boom Blox, and World of Goo are trully innovative.

Everything on the 360/PS3/PC this year was all the same brown shooters we've been playing for years. The only honorable mention is Fable II and Banjo: Nuts and Bolts.

So PS3 comes in 3rd place for me.

For Goodness sake, even Metal Gear Solid 4 became a crappy brown shooter of sorts.

Nintendo has shown that fun, gameplay and innovation beats out horsepower and tedium.

Also WiiFit and WiiMusic are things that Sony and Microsoft could never dream up.

There's nothing like playing Tiger Woods 09 with the Wiimote. It's the definite version and nothing like playing Shawn White: Snowboarding - Road Trip with the Balance Board.

Basically, the Wii lineup shows just how juvenile the 360/PS3/PC lineups are by comparison. It'd be nice if other Publishers and Developers besides Nintendo developers figured out games where there are more ways to interact with NPCs than only kill them.

With the Wii, videogaming is growing up from the juvenile adolescent fantasies that the PS3/360/PC offer.

On the hardware and software side the 360 is doing the best.

on the software side the wii is the worst based on content while the ps3 is the worst on hardware.

best software lineup has to be a tie with the PS3 hosting a few good A rank titles and the 360 hosting a lot of B rank material on their retail and download services. It makes me start to want a PS3...but not enough to shun my 360.

I like how people complaining about the Wii are only talking about how there are no Nintendo 1st party games. There were plenty of great Wii games this year from 3rd parties. Baroque, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, No More Heroes, and plenty of others.

Anyway, I can't choose between my 360 and Wii, and I don't have a PS3 for a reson so it's in last by default. So whatever.

I'm one of those that owns all three systems. I've got to give the top spot to the PS3.

Having experienced a Red Ring, I will never forgive the 360 as a console. Say what you will about extended warranties and speed of coffin delivery, if you have a used console you're out $100.

I hate that they lock credit card info onto the console and you can't manually delete it. While at my folks' for Thanksgiving I bought my little brother Street Fighter Remix, then found my info was trapped on the system until I spent twenty minutes with customer service. WTF were they thinking there?

Their d-pad has been the cause of much frustration. And there isn't even a single third party alternative, let alone a first party fix.

Still, having played online extensively, 360 does have a smoother experience. So, go them!

The PS3 is a tank. I love my blu-rays. I love its reliability and the piece of mind that I have every time I turn it on. I love the controller with its tried and true design. If you've ever played poker online with friends, with cameras and beers for all, then you know a night of pure awesome. Being able to share downloadable games with up to five of your friends is just sweet as hell. And the games library manages to grow as fast as I can play them (though, the 360 clearly wins on this).

That all being said, fuck the Wii. A company that won't accept hundreds of dollars of my money per year because they won't build a damn harddrive for all of the downloadable games I would legally purchase were it not a hassle. Ooh, and then has the brass cojones to call me a geek and/or otaku for feeling that way (I mean, they're right BUT then meant it as derogatory). A company that tells me that I want too much when all I want is a consistant games library where I always have a new game to play (and I play through very slow). One that tells me I should be satisfied because Animal Crossing is made for me (I enjoy it, but it's not a game). The Wii is pure hassle in a box, made by a company that rains urine onto its audience. And let's not even discuss the broken online component.

Best: PS3
Worst: Wii (subject to change when a new Zelda game hits)

Most Dissapointing: Wii

My brother has an Xbox and brought it home over Christmas break. And you know what? We've been playing it far more than my Wii. It just has more quality games, better online functionality, and more third-party support. That's not to say the Wii is awful, but the handful of worthwhile console-exclusive titles (Super Mario Galaxy, SSBB, DeBlob, etc) that came out this year just couldn't keep pace with the juggernaut that is the Xbox 360.

2009 looks like the year when the Wii finally catches up, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Mad World.

Best-Xbox 360. Tons of game, great online experience, great multi-media service, and continues to push the entire genre forward with new features every year.

Worse-PS3. High price, removed backward compatibility, limited games, and did I mention the high price?

and in the middle, the little ol' Wii. Fun for parties and family get togethers but so is alcohol.

Runner up-PS2. The system still rocks, is affordable, and even Sony is still supporting it with new games.

Honorable mention, World of Warcraft, it should be considered a platform on its own.

God I hate when people (or, more commonly, fanboys) use the PS3's "high" price as an excuse to hate. It's like calling Rock Band stupid because of it's "high" price, which was also the best $180 I've ever spent (buy it a Sam's Club, it's $20 cheaper). Just pay the entry price and shut the fuck up.

Also, I want to say again that this is a subject best left to those who have all three gaming consoles, which excludes myself as I only have two of the three.
