Last week was a shoot out between the two classic first person shooter series Quake and Unreal Tournament. Some argued that Quake deserved the win this week for paving the path of online play, while others thought Unreal Tournament's multitude of maps and gameplay made for the winning combination. It's hard to call the debate result a landslide when the losing side still received dozens of votes, but it's obvious that there was a clear winner this week:
- Quake series: 35 votes
- Unreal Tournament series: 83 votes -- winner!
This week's game developer debate comes from the suggestion of Kartzan, who wants to see Valve and id Software face off against one another. Valve has taken the industry by storm in recent years with its successful Half-Life and Counter-Strike games, while id has been pushing profits for two decades with Commander Keen and several Doom and Quake games. Which is the better company, and why? Cast your votes, give us a reason for your decision, get some friends to give their opinions, and check back next week for the winner. Feel free to suggest other developer or publisher debates you'd like to see play out.

I'm sorry but... doom...
and thats all i have to say about that.
Valve.
However valve is good as well, but I can never hold any higher than id ;). id is one of the longest standing developers in the industry and one of the ONLY developers that is not controlled by its publisher, they have a love relationship.. and activision gives id Software the space they need... hardly any other publisher does that for a developer.
And 2.. every single engine to be used on an id game has been built from in house persons *cough* john carmack. That should say enough right there ;). Granted they have a style of games that many got bored of after half-life they still have some amazing talent and never give up with pushing new things out or never give up on pushing the boundaries for the industry.
microsoft = id, bill gates = john carmack, and valve = google. bill gates is the richest man in the world and carmack is one of the most well known names in the industry, yet google's stock is leagues beyond microsoft's in price. google (valve) kicks ass every single year, whereas microsoft (id) only comes out with a new version of windows (doom or some other game like doom) every few years. however, the average person can't name the head honchos of google, but i'd still take google over microsoft any day in a debate, because providing a kickass service (steam) is far more important than a kickass OS (carmack's engines).
so i vote valve, and i would have even if they never started steam.
for sure.
Half-life man, that was good... and with Source and the ability to make anyhting your heart desires.. *COUGH*Black Mesa: Source*COUGH* Valve wins hands down
Discuss...
Half Life 2 was the bomb, better than any id ever did.
No Disrespect to id.
roots, people.
Halflife wouldn't have been the same had ID not existed. ID are fucking pioneers. ID wrote the fucking book on good FPS's... that and Commander Keen is way better than codename gordon(most comparable game by valve) or any other game there is. ID pushes new technologies, offers more cross-platform support, and is truly original in game creation.
and don't even get me started on the amazing shareware and open source shit from ID.
ID FTW!!!!!!1one11
Hey Doug!
ID wins again
always and forever.
<3
Doom FTW
VALVE ftw!
and btw vavle had nothing to do with CS, DoD, or TF... but valve IS really good at taking credit for all of those games
Linde nails it.
What Valve has managed to do, is absorb independent Mod-developers, and all of the good ideas in 3d gaming and replicate them as their own. The original Half-Life engine (Goldsrc) was developed using the Quake Engine, and moved to a modified version of the Quake II engine during production. The Team Fortress team was absorbed by valve after they made their most important team-based game. The Counter-Strike guys were also absorbed after creating their Team Fortress inspired mod. And now they’re taking in the narbacular team to make Portal. IMO this is not the sign of a truly innovative game developer
The shear amount of innovation and technology that id has brought to the FPS genre, True 3d gaming, and even side-scrollers; should outweigh ANY game that Valve has done. Id is not a mere game developer, they are industry pioneers. w/o the painstaking work of ONE MAN from this company (John Carmack, The programming god) we would have never seen a Half-Life 2, a Team Fortress 2, or even a Half-Life 1 for that matter.
Without Commander Keen, side-scrollers would be gimped to jerky scrolling and inefficient coding.
Without DooM, The FPS genre would have never taken off, there would be no such things as Gibs, Frags, or Deathmatch.
Without Quake and Quake II, There would be no truly 3d game worlds, and GPU’s (Graphics cards) would have become a useless computer fad
I guess a lot of you can’t remember the heyday of DooM, Quakeworld, or the original TF. But I hope you can recognize the superior company here. Even Valve has given props to id by putting their awesome games on Steam, the one truly groundbreaking product that Valve has produced.
Oh yeah… My votes for id BTW
Peace
another good point as to why ID is better.(although Valve is really cool)
now we just need to get Nexium and Captain Blue to post... i think Secrethojo has an account on dtoid too
Like squee said I wouldn't consider them much of a developer, they have a standard style of gaming, which they created and they have stuck with it for a long while (may change with rage, may not) but what they have always push forward with is technology and the way games are made. That is why I consider them higher than any other, and the fact that they are still going is what excites me even more.
However when it comes to gaming community, valve can take the cake on that because they have cattered to the community. Valve took the approach of giving to the community and absorbing it (ie taking in the counter-strike mod, dod mod, etc) And they do a good job with it. Realistically id and Valve are close in a battle such as this but in terms of what they have done over the years its hard to compare.. id Software has been around since 1991, valve has been known in the industry since 1998. Between those many years lots of major advancements were made.
I give id Software the gold when it comes to how games are made, and the technologies used within them. And I give valve the gold when it comes to holding the community close and taking care of it. When it comes to 'Quality' games its all subjective and personal opinion, I personally love id Softwares style of games, and I love valves. Some love more than the other. They BOTH score high on the top charts as triple a titles, and will continue to do so for years to come (one could only hope for both of them to continue on!)
