Game Debate to the Death! Twisted Metal 2 VS Resident Evil 2 photo

Last week we argued over two early 3D adventure games of completely different genre backgrounds, and the decision was overwhelmingly in favor of story and artistic expression over action and excitement. Here are the results:

  • Silent Hill (51 votes) -- Winner!
  • Tomb Raider (16 votes)

Silent Hill's movie also got more praise in the comments than the Tomb Raider film, although there was a split debate over which series was currently progressing more smoothly, with slightly more support of Tomb Raider's recent rebirth.

This week we move on to a battle between two famous PlayStation sequels. Both games featured ample amounts of death and destruction in memorable performances of their time. However, while one game slowly found gore in dark corners of spooky environments, the other fought evil on wheels in fast paced environments.  For every way that Twisted Metal 2 offered unharnessed adrenaline and excitement to its players, Resident Evil 2 matched it in controlled events of player anxiety and fear.

How will you make your decision this week? Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PlayStation friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner and the conclusion of the PlayStation odd debate brackets.

Resident Evil 2. Kick ass game.

Axel is the worst idea ever for a destruction derby game. He's an unshielded body that can't even move out of the way of the bullets that every car shoots.

Stupidity aside, RE2 is better.

Resident Evil 2, that's when console games grew up for me.

Hands down, I will declare RE2 the victor. It's story was a huge step up from the first game, as well as the two character, multi-path gameplay. Not to mention the sweet unlockable weapons. My GameShark was never more useful than with that game.

I have never been a fan of survival horror games, and for the most part, the Silent Hill series has been the one exception along the way. I still don't enjoy the series since I can't stand the way they're played, but I can still respect it for doing a lot of things right in admirable ways that changed the industry. Resident Evil games . . . not so much. While the series is unarguably running strong still to this day, and also doing a lot of things right, it's still "just a zombie" game at its core, and I can't ignore that.

Twisted Metal 2 on the other hand, practically reinvented the subgenre of car combat and provided one of the most enjoyable experiences the PS1 had to offer. Back in the day of N64 VS PS1 wars on my childhood neighborhood, Twisted Metal 2 was the most notorious game pulling the N64 addicts away from their houses for a PS1 vacation. It was incredibly fun, and although the series has not progressed very well over the years compared to the Resident Evil games, for this debate the vote is clear in my mind.

VOTE: Twisted Metal 2.

Trust me, me and my cousin spend tons and tons of hours playing Twisted Metal 2, unlocking virtually everything... though, I actually consider RE2 to be a better game.

I can go back and play that anytime and it'll still scare the hell out of me. TM2 is fun and all, but just doesn't have the story or emotion going for it... just raw fun.

Looks like we might have a Halloween-worthy Silent Hill VS Resident Evil rematch debate. I forget who won last year . . . I'll have to go dig it up and check.

I've never played Resident Evil 2, but given my experience with Resident Evil 1, I'd have to give my vote to Twisted Metal 2. It's just too much fun not to.

yes, TM2 was fun.

RE2 simply defined survival horror and is the best in the series.

RE4 is not included in that series for the mere fact its no longer survival horror as it is actionadventure.

RE2 FTW. I distinctly remember playing it on my laptop on a road trip, headphones on, and yelling when those decaying arms reached out and grabbed me. My family looked at my like I was retarded. It was awesome.

Probably put more hours into that game with my cousin back in the day than most JRPGs... and that's a lot.

I preferred Twisted Metal. I just don't like scary stuff all that much, and TM was goofy enough that the creepy elements didn't take hold. Any game that adds fighting moves to a destruction derby is pretty OK with me.

Resident Evil 2 is a solid, mass-audience pleasing straightforward game, with stiff controls. But Twisted Metal 2 is an example of near endless replayability, balance, and genius game design

Twisted Metal 2 is still fun to pop in an co-op like crazy with a friend after all these years. Resident Evil 2 was only fun to beat once or twice.

Two VERY different games, plus putting a really ingenious game like Twisted Metal 2 up against a hyper-popular -general-audience pleaser like the Resident Evil series isn't at all fair.

Resident Evil 2

Twisted metal was for for a bit but overall too easy and simple.
They id give it some charecter though. I remember the man tied to giant wheels rather well.
Plus it had story endings and motivations for all the charectors. I never got the overall plot, but it was something that was nice to have back then.

Still, Resident Evil stands out as a real thrill.
RE2's story was more about surviving in a zombie filled town with plot twists abound. Action wasn't quite in the mix as much as stabbing zombies and running away to save ammo for that evenitable boss that you know will kill the crap out of you.

So yes, Resident Evil 2 is my choice.

Shooting cars to death is fun and all, but even with a story it doesn't surpass the constant tention that Resident Evil has.

Mis-match of the century. RE2 wins this, I remember waiting for my PS-owning to own this, and it was such a phenomenon. I mean, it was so much better than the original.

While RE2 is easily the better game, one look at that ridiculous Axel character/vehicle made me burst out laughing at the absurdity of it. And for that, I give Twisted Metal 2 my vote.

I played a TON of Twisted Metal in the ps1 era, and have owned TM2. On the Resident Evil side, I mistakenly ended up playing a borrowed copy of 2 years back. I hate horror video games and even horror movies, but I forced myself to play it all the way through, and was scared to death ever minute of it. That being said, I think Resident Evil 2 is the better game. I can't think of any reason that Twisted 2 would trump it, but that comes down to if you like multiplayer better than a single player experience.

My vote is Resident Evil 2.

Kind of an unfair comparison, as TM2 is by and large a multiplayer experience, whereas RE2 is only a single player experience.

However, I have to go with RE2 since it's still my favorite in the series.

Damn...I love Resident Evil 2 but Twisted Metal does have multiplayer which was great back in the day.

It really sucks because Twisted Metal 2 is one of the better vehicle combat games available period but I've got to say that it loses out to the arguably best true Survival Horror game made ever.

Resident Evil 2 wins out (although I know I'd rather play Twisted Metal 2 with friends around).
