Game Debate to the Death! Tony Hawk VS Skate photo

The last debate kicked off Dtoid boot camp and over one hundred votes were cast when I asked what the best football video game of all time was. Not only was a clear winner decided by our votes, but we even get to see the outcome of the whole Madden series versus the whole Blitz series. The top three most voted games are listed below, followed by the series showdown. And just in case you were wondering what the most voted Blitz/Madden games were, Blitz 2000 had seven votes, while Madden 95 led its huddle with just three votes. Sux 2BU! Here are the top results:

  • Tecmo Super Bowl: 20 votes
  • ESPN NFL 2K5: 13 votes
  • Tecmo Bowl: 8 votes

  • Blitz series: 20 votes
  • Madden series: 12 votes

It looks like no new football game will be dethroning the classics any time soon. This week's debate is a skating competition that I've been saving for Dtoid boot camp month. All you have to do is pick your favorite Tony Hawk game, and compare it to the recently released Skate game. Which is the better skateboarding game, and what makes it the best? Give us a reason for your decision, get some skater buddies to give their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Skate or Die 2.

Or you could put me down for skate.

I only played the demo for skate. but I liked what I played. If you were to ask me which I would rather play right now, then I would say skate. hands down. But if you are asking which was the best for its time, then it's gotta be THPS3 on the PS2. By that point, they had really perfected the formula, with manual and reverts and whatnot, but they did not travel too far into the completely irreverent. My vote goes to THPS3, if only because it deserves some love in this contest.

I never played skate, but I remember Tony Hawk Pro SKater 2 to be pure gold, I played that game to death and was able to get the most ridiculous combos.

I pick Skate over my favorite (THPS Underground). Yes, I liked Underground. Fuck you. Still Skate beats it on the basis of it being fresh and getting the controls so right.

TONY HAWK hands down.

Tony Hawk: walk, flatland, awesome.
Skate: no walk, no flatland, no awesome.

I loved the earlier Tony Hawk games, played them to death but i picked up skate a few weeks back and knowing a few friend who do this as a hobby watching them go crazy at how much better skate was kinda sealed it for me. The gajillion points impossibility in Tony Hawk later on ruined it for me..Oh and the inclusion of Bam Margera's goons in the later games, ugh. Slowly turned into the "BAM BAM BAM...Tony who?" Pro Skater

Skate FTW! Its realistic, amazing controls, its not about doing the biggest combo ever, its all about the tricks. Tony set it up, but Skate knocked em down. Skate is my vote.

I love THPS2. Yes I played the hell out of that one 2. It seriously was great stuff. but Skate is pretty much about to take what Tony couldn't provide 20 sum games later.

so chalk it up to Skate.

Tony Hawk 1-4 were awesome and Underground wasn't even that bad. I love the THPS series because it's one of the few games that I can beat any of my friends at. :D

Tony Hawk 2 is the best ever, though.

To be honest, I only played the PSN demo of skate. While I thought it was much better than Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground, but I just couldn’t get used to the controls after so many years of hitting X and then left, down, O for The 900, for example. I’d have to go with Tony Hawk’s Underground on the PS2. I liked it better than THPS 4, and it introduced the whole walking thing, which was novel and well-implemented. The series just became stale and went downhill after that game.

By the way, Fronz, you probably shouldn’t have used Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground in the image above if you want people to consider any of the games in the THPS series. By using that image, you’re pretty much guaranteeing that skate. will win, because most people will see the post’s title and picture, and assume that the decision is between those two games (and they won’t consider any of the first four games in the THPS series, which all rocked).

I think I'd pick Tony Hawk's 3-Underground and 2 for the GBA, (that game still kicks ass for a Gameboy title). Those were my favorites, and I played them to death. It wasn't exactly the most realistic (ollie'ing over people?), but was still fun and the only choice I had. But, being a skateboarder myself, when skate. came out, everything changed. The control and tricks are so realistic and satisfying to pull off that it is the closest you come to actual skateboarding in a videogame. Instead of million-point combos, you're trying to land 3 trick runs. It definitely changed the whole skateboarding genre and perspective.

***I'd pick 3-Underground and THPS 2 for the GBA as titles that would compare. skate. still beats them all.

Skate for sure.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I think a picture of Tony Hawk 2 next to Skate would have helped the Tony Hawk games get quite a few more votes.

skate. The controls, the feeling of realism, the graphics, the sound, etc. No contest here.. if you chose THPS then you have probably never stood on a skateboard (or you played skate on PS3).

THPS 1 - 4 were fun, THUG was ok, THUG 2 was stupid but had a lot of fun levels,THAW is pretty good, THP8 wondered away and was probably my least fave and THPG I liked, but I thought THP8 and THPG were good only for 360/PS3 (I have the PS2 versions)
The PS2 ones online were good cause of the glitchers, hackers and pros. Well anyways I'm gonna go with THUG 2, one of the worst but the best levels.

I have played them both and the PS3 one suffers from frame rate issues and inferior graphics to the 360 version.

I think they both equally suck.

But if I had to choose, it would be Tony Hawk 2, only cause it was trying to be realistic from skateboarding point of view before backflips, impossible tricks, and the internet kicked in.

As for skate, it's called trying to put to much into something that is so simple. And it's only half-assed because if they wanted you to 'feel the moves' you'd be doing it with your feet, not your thumbs. Also, I might as well mention them wanting me to break my analog sticks - fail.

Skate.>THPS2>>>THP8>THAW

Skate is just revolutionary
I thought THP8 was the best TH game since THPS2, which I played the incessant crap out of. But skate. just works too well. I skate casually, and all my skateboarding friends LOVE skate. My friend who hates video games even bought Skate. so he could play it on my 360.

Now, if only they made a Skate type game with rollerblading.

Fronz, top five gaming crimes perpetuated by Tony Hawk in the '90s and '00s. Go. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?

The answer, skate, because Tony Hawks latter games have been such abortions.

Lawl, I think most people are going with Skate based on the crap the TH franchise has become. Not really a fair comparison. Just wait till EA is coming out with Skate XII Subeterranean Flying Monkeys Edition.
