Game Debate to the Death! Super Smash Bros. Melee VS Resident Evil 4 photo

Dear Luigi,

I apologize for giving you a chance to shine last week when I had you compete against your cousin, Celda. I don't regret having family do battle with one another; when your brother plays with his friends he doesn't come home crying and complaining. He stands up and shines. Hell, they even named one of his games Sunshine. You have been asking us to take you seriously for years, so I go out of my way to give you a chance, and you blew it:

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (126 votes) -- Winner!
  • Luigi's Mansion (12 votes)

Hearing you complain about never coming in first isn't funny anymore. It's time you grew up and did something with your life. I blame your parents. What you need is a Paper Luigi Story sneak attack. The consumers will never expect it. Come back when you're ready to hang with the big kids.

Sincerely, half of your family's fans.

I expected Wind Waker to win, but not by such a staggering margin. So this week I must cast aside some of the artsy and innovative games I had planned for two games that could save the third round from getting ugly. Once these odd debates are done I'll come back and revisit titles like Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. As for now, here's two big hitters that have nothing in common except their hopes to give Wind Waker a good fight in the Gamecube finals.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some Gamecube childhood friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

I love Smash Brothers, except for Melee because I never owned a Gamecube and didn't have a chance to get into it (with my wii I now own Wind Waker and Fire Emblem: PoR, but that's besides the point). And Melee was WAY too different from the 64 version, and I wasn't as good at it so I was just turned off immediatly. And I haven't played through RE4 on the GC, but I did play through it twice on the PS2, so it gets my vote as the better game.

VOTE: Resident Evil 4

Most definitely RE4.

They're both great games though. Off topic though, I still think I can get a few more plays out of RE4, escpecially because I haven't yet played the Wii version, whereas Melee I'm pretty much done with. I'm afraid Brawl is just too good for it.

HA, AWESOME! Sandlot references rule! Anyways, I'll try and decide fairly on this one, even though I clearly favor Melee in this debate. RE4 had one of the best single player campaigns in that generation of games, some of the most sadistic and evil enemies and death animations, and was a very fun experience. Melee combined Nintendo's best and brightest characters with some of the lost favorites of older generations into one of the simplest yet deep fighting games I've ever experienced. Single player allowed for hundreds of trophies to collect, while Multiplayer has graced me and my friends with an uncountable number of great memories. I'm sorry, I think that's a bit biased, but still,

My vote is for Super Smash Bros Melee.

Dont get me wrong, I love RES4 and Ive played it til the end many times.
But melee will ALWAYS have that special spot in my heart.
I must have over 2000hours of melee, and I stopped playing it because I moved to norway, but I play it whenever I have the chance to. Very close call but

SUPER SMASH BROS MELEE FOREVER!!

btw brawl sucks ass. Hello new characters, goodbye fast-paced fun. Brawl was the worst thing it could ever happen to the SSB series.
now I feel like crying a little bit.

oh and I think this is kind of an unfair comparison between games. You either LOVE, or you hate smash.
You can either be really good at it, or really SUCK at it.
Everyone who voted against smash is because they just couldnt handle it. And thats the bloody truth.
All lovers know exactly what Im talking about.

RE4 i could never get into, but melee.... well, lets just say I unlocked mewtwo (20 hours of overall competitiveness) without the "leave your gamecube on all night" trick! what a surprise that was to find out!

RE4 fo' sho! Whilst Melee is solid, you too would have a slight disdain for the game if your friends constantly played it for hours on Final Destination...

Melee. It's not even close for me. I liked RE4, and I beat it several times, but there is only one other game that's even on the same tier as Melee (no pun intended, or delivered for that matter), and it sure isn't RE4. What pisses me off is that in SSBB vs RE4, I think SSBB might win, or at least do better than Melee. And if Melee somehow had a single player mode even half as fun as multiplayer, it would be the best game ever made no question.

Just a couple of days ago I was talking about how amazing Resident Evil 4 is (just got a used copy of the Wii version, I'm loving it to death even after beating the Gamecube version more than 10 times a few years ago).

If I had a Top 5 of best games in my life, Resident Evil 4 would definitely have a place in it, but there is only one game that can fill the number one spot... And that's definitely Smash Bros. Melee. I've been playing it for more than 6 years and it still has so much fun to offer that's just ridiculous!

So my vote goes for Melee, without a single doubt in my mind. BEST GAME EVAHHHH! lol

PS: Brawl was the worst thing to ever happen to the series. I tried out Smash Bros. 64 for the first time on a computer emulator just a week before buying Brawl and the gameplay was actually more fun... That is so sad on so many levels...

That's a really well written article about Luigi, impressive.

I have quite a problem when deciding between these two games, I'd probably say Resident Evil 4 because I never owned Super Smash Bros Melee, I think I played it once but never had chance to play it thoroughly.

Resident Evil 4 is such a great game but I was so disappointed with it because I was such a hardcore Resident Evil fan and the story of RE4 really annoyed me. Without ranting on too much, it lacked the mystery and investigating that other Resident Evil games had. I liked the Ganados but missed the Zombies, however I understand that the game needed a reboot. Capcom wanted to appeal to a wider audience. Hear's to Resident Evil 5 being a great success, long live Biohazards...

No game has ever consumed me like SSBM. I didn't get my hands on RE4 until the Wii edition (which I loved). Still, there's no way I could vote against Smash.

So, yeah, Melee.

Melee.

I loved RE4, but I'm a stickler for having replayability in my games, which means when I can find a fighter that's fun for everyone (everyone with a soul, at least), it gets the everloving shit played out of it.

Resident Evil 4 is a damn good game, with a good story and some pretty fun bonus modes, but there are other games that are like it. Outside of the other iterations of the Smash Bros. series, what other game has had a system that's truly comparable to Melee's?

Ugh, a very tough choice....

As stated many times before, RE4 revolutionized the way the RE series is played, and was infinitely more deep and engaging. As one who appreciates all aspects of Games, RE4 is a shining example of excellence.

On the other hand, if we look at games for their original intent, pure entrainment value, Melee stands out with great, simple gameplay that you and three buddies can hop on a couch and kill an evening with.

But, seeing that I take everything into consideration when deciding something is better, overall RE4 wins.

I still play both.

No question for me: RE4.

I'm a huge fan of the whole RE series, and this is simply the best of the best.

Smash Brothers always felt like a fan service game more than anything to me - as a Tekken/Virtua Fighter player I never got into the simplified frantic fighting.

Resident Evil 4 by far.

I liked SSBM and I probably played it the most out of the series, but I wouldn't be surprised if I played RE4 more. I have a hell of a time forcing myself to play a game I've recently beaten twice (which really sucks when games like Castle Crashers and Left 4 Dead come along), but I made it through RE4 at least four times in quick succession.

I'm picking RE4, but only because this is Melee. I never really played it. If it was SSB64 or SSB: Brawl, I would have gone with the Smash Bros.

Tough choice either way. Both fantastic games. I can't help hoping that Smash Bros wins, even though I voted for RE4.

Resident Evil 4 looks great, but I always sucked too hard at it to enjoy it much. The game has an incredibly steep learning curve, especially for those that don't often play shooters. I'm not denying RE4's merits, but Smash Bros. Melee has my vote. That game has some extremely good memories of countless hours spent with friends tied to it.

RE4. I only choose that over SSMB because of my love for the Mercenaries mini-game. Too much fun to be ignored.

Playing hunk on the docks level is just a bit more exciting than thwomping people as Sheik at Hyrule castle.
