Game Debate to the Death! Street Fighter IV VS BlazBlue photo

Last week we used more Dtoider input and took inFamous through another round of debate. Did it meet its death? Or did it persevere once again? The leader of the votes swayed several times -- just as it did the week before -- but in the end the winner was clear. Here are the final results:

  • Red Faction: Guerrilla (40 votes)
  • inFamous (33 votes)

This week we use another reader suggestion and grant Squinshee's wish to see Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger fight to the death. Both have distinct art styles that differ greatly from one another, and both utilize different gameplay tactics to target the same audience of gamers. So which game do you think is better, and why? What aspect is it that made your mind up? Give it some serious thought, get some fighting genre friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What is one thing you don't like about the game you voted for? Oh, and Not Pr0n is still waiting to devour your soul. Mwahahahaha!

Not big on fighting games. Have seen both played, but have played neither, so I'm refraining from voting this week. But I will say this -- I like BlazBlue's art style better, even if it is typical flooded 3d cel shaded to look 2d stuff. It's done really well. That one hero who looks like the creature in Spirited Away? FUCK YES!

I played them both at a convention last weekend, and thought Blazblue was blatantly better in every way. Street Fighter looked nice, but I got bored of it after about half an hour. There was just nothing special about it.
Blazblue I played for hours, and then more an my friend's house, and love absolutely everything about it.

I looked high and low to rent either one of these games last week and no one had SF4 and Blazeblue wasn't in stock. It made me sad, so no vote for me, which is too bad because I want to play these games.

I am going to go with Street Fighter 4. I like the SF series because it is easy to learn, hard to master. It makes you feel really good when you can pull off some of the games more difficult combos, where as in BlazBlue, you can set it to just flick a stick to pull off a special move. Mostly over all, I just like the fighting style of SF4 better, but this is a close competition.

What I don't like is constatly being dropped from matches because the prick has disconnected from the game. Not really the games fault, just the chodes that play it.

I didn't like that you have to lose to everyone to get a 100% complete story mode finish in it. Also, it was not as good as Guilty Gear XX.

But gonna go with Blazblue for its superior online performance/features.
And for not taking the easy way out and go 3D.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for me. It is the fighting game out of the 2 I still play. As for what I don't like about BlazBlue, it would have to be people that spam Rachael's little rod lightning move the whole time.

I'm placing my vote for BlazBlue. I think it does a number of things better than Street Fighter IV; it has the best story I've ever seen in a Fighting game(I really like the visual novel feel), characters that aren't merely defined by their nationality and fighting style(Street Fighter's characters are almost racist in their simplicity), a completely badass soundtrack, a better online experience, and most of all, I really enjoy the art style over SFIV. The only problems I have with the game are it's awkward story progression and a sometimes off-kilter dub.

Blazblue. It's a much more approachable game (the macros assigned to the second stick as well as MUCH more forgiving controls make the game much easier for newcomers). Additionally, the roster, although much smaller, is much more diverse than SFIV's, and the mechanics actually feel fresh (something quite rare in fighting games these days).

However, I dislike the scaling method Blazblue uses for SD televisions... either I have to look at annoying black space, or I have to make the screen area larger than my actual television screen. Please patch this game to include "real" 4:3 support, AKSYS!

Let's see here, BlazBlue has superior online features to SF4 in every way... I vote BlazBlue.

Finding something wrong with this game is really hard. While BB's story mode is pretty robust for a fighting game, it still suffers from ridiculous convolution.

I thought I was back into fighting games when SF4 came out. I played it for a few weeks then just kinda got bored.

I bought BlazBlue and instantly loved it so hard I dropped over 150 bucks for a TE fighstick, then got custom BlazBlue art for it.

My vote goes to BlazBlue!
I guess I don't like the fact that my main is the "cheap" character :(

Watch the tournaments. In Street Fighter tournaments most people just play Sagat and spam the ranged attack. BlazBlue tournaments are actually exciting.

BlazBlue for the win. Better netcode, 6 player lobbies, and a diverse lineup of characters. Way better than SF4 and it's "no friends allowed" player match lobbies.

One thing I don't like about BB is that the projectile based characters like Nu and Rachel dominate the close range characters such as Tager and Hakumen.

BlazBlue, since there's much more diversity in the cast so each character plays different, and it has the best soundtrack I've heard in any fighting game made to this day.

What I don't like about it? Score Attack Mode. I have no clue how to beat this mode without having to use cheap tactics. I only beat it because I spammed Jin's Ice Car move countless times. I feel uncomfortable when I have to beat modes by playing like a scrub.

I think both are extremely good games, but I have to say SFIV. If I had more free time, I might say BlazBlue, but knowing that I have to spend 20+ hours just trying to get down the precise timing of the most basic of combos (which involve 16 button presses each) is a turn off. Every time I boot it up and go into a guide to start trying to learn a character, I just get too overwhelmed when I see something like "This combo is completely basic and shouldn't be used in any kind of real play against human opponents", and then see that it involves whiffing two throws on purpose so you can cancel into a million button press combo that requires < 5 frame precision. I pretty much gave up on it after spending about 3 hours just trying to get down Arakune's 'basic curse loop', which apparently is a requirement to do anything with him. If I had the time, I'm sure it'd be my #1 game, but I don't, and it's not the kind of game you really have much fun with if you can't pull off any of the combos.

Also, finding out that I had to purposefully lose 6-8 times for every character in story mode just to get the 'real ending' was a massive turnoff. As gorgeous and fun as the game is, that design choice absolutely boggles my mind. I know story mode isn't really important in fighting games anyway, but jesus christ, what the fuck were they thinking?

Blazblue. Both games have vastly different ways of playing, while SF might have more characters to choose from alot of them are derivatives(Ryu derivatives) and as such lack to some extent variety. In Blazblue every character is almost radically different and I feel that is part of what makes the game fun to play. There is a ton more content then there is in street fighter, which for a less hardcore nut equates to more things to do than get your butt kicked online. The arcade component has a better in context story as you fight, with the vocals sometimes being different depending on who you fight. Online play is fast, and very easy to get into. Fighting mechanics are fast and furious on your feet mind games rather then turtle or force opponent into your shoryuken mindgames. While at the same time being just as accessible as the street fight series. I won't comment on graphics, both look great depending on what your looking for. Sound... the music is far better than SF4 but nothing can beat SF4's cheesy intro music that oddly penetrates your brain and does wierd things like making you hum it.

Bonus Question: Hard to come up with a true negative at this point in time, just like I really wouldn't be able to come up with a true argument for SF4's negatives since they both do their job well for different audiences. Much like any fighting game there are some balance issues, and while theres no infinite juggles some of them so a tad more then they should. Some moves are more spam-able than they should be as well(like Jin's ice car but no where near as annoying as zangeif).
