The game series debate continues! Last week we ended the Mario series by choosing the all-star of its RPG past and having it battle the pinnacle Mario platformer game to the death. Some disagreed with the two that made the finals, others bowed out of the voting process due to an inability to choose, while others just sat back and watched with excitement. Stirring from their decades of sleep, the two Super Nintendo giants went to war for the title of the best Mario game of all time, and one went back to its slumber with all the stars:
- Super Mario World (20 votes) -- Dtoid Army's favorite Mario game of all time!
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (11 votes)
Resident Evil is another series that stretches back many years, and much like the picture above, it also has shadows from its past that refuse to be forgotten. Can Resident Evil 5 overcome the success of its predecessor? Will one of the older titles be the survival horror game that still survives after all these years? A newer portable game perhaps? Or will a game in one of its sub-series surprise us all?
Which game do you like the most out of the entire Resident Evil series, and why? What aspects of its game design, gameplay, visual and audio experience made up your mind? Give it some serious thought, share your thought process with all of us, and then get some friends who also enjoy survival horror games to join in on the fun. Because it was a long and varied action game. it never got old and the characters were unusually interesting. Also spanish is my first language to when I heard "!Detrás de tí imbecil!" it resonated that much more for me.
Odd numbers are not good for the RE franchise. 3 and 5 seem to me like minor upgrades to 2 and 4 and not as exciting or interesting as their predecesors.
The scariest for me was the first one because I was 12 (I think) when i first played it. and this is just becoming too long a post so i'll just end it
If it does... RE 4. HANDS DOWN.
"This game contains scenes of explicit violence and gore."
I know 4 is going to win, but if you vote for that fucking game, I'm sorry, you've confused action and horror.
Resident Evil 4 and 5 were good action games, I'll grant you that, but they were terrible Resident Evils. Resi 4 in particular is just... they could have called that game anything else and it'd have been fantastic but as a Resident Evil it's a complete misfit in every single way.
I admit the very first game on the PS1 was pretty damn creepy at the time so it deserves some mention, but horrible controls and other shortcomings keep it from ever reaching the top spot. RE4 is special because I had written off the entire series by the time it came out only to witness it revive almost every aspect of RE games in a spectacular way. There are a lot of memories associated with the game that I don't have time to go into but I do recall seeing RE4 being played by my friends and the first thought coming to mind being "this can't seriously be a Gamecube game."
Goddamn fantastic game on just about every level. I know other people will have their own opinions, but if RE4 isn't in your top 3, then I seriously question your judgment.
this is going to be a slaughter
My roommate's played a few of them and he says 4 is the best, like most people I know... So I guess, he votes for RE4 through me... if that's allowed.
But hey! I've seen the movies! So next week I'm good.
Kidding, 4's the best you sillies.
We could trust Dtoiders to be honest about that, right? ...Right?
I was just thinking that. I'd love to know, out of everyone who's syaing RE4, how many of them have played the other Resis and of those, how many of them played the other Resis before RE4 came out.
Oh, and the intro scene for the Licker...
I'll grant, though, that time has not been kind to it. My loyalty is more borne from nostalgia than anything else. Tank controls died as they should have. But RE2 will never die for me.
BQ1: Resident Evil 3, while solid, was pretty much story-less. It just felt like they weren't trying as much as they have before or after it. RE5 was fun as hell, but a complete divorce from horror, and that's blaspheming in my mind.
BQ2: For most games: The shotgun. Something about the flicking up to get a headshot. Magic. I loved Krauser's Bow and Arrow in RE4's Mercenary game, too.
BQ3: William Berkin - His continued transformations and importance to the story of the second game made his fights that more frightening and meaningful. His second form (I think), with the giant eyeball in one shoulder and his face shoved to the other is still one of my favorite mutations in the series. A solid second is Wesker in his new form in Code: Veronica.
BQ4: RE: Code: Veronica. Most consistent. This is a tough one to answer, but CV just has the most memorable tunes (besides the police station in RE2). Alexia's theme is so memorable, too.
BQ5: Resident Evil 1: Gamecube remake. They really amped up the atmosphere in this one, and the Crimson Heads still give me the creeps.
BQ6: None of them are very hard, to be honest... Though I guess CV has one game ending mistake in it that makes it impossible to finish if you didn't hold onto one item. Resident Evil 4 is pretty challenging as well, but so much fun you don't notice.
BQ7: Ada. So ambiguous as to whether she's a friend or foe... STILL, even this far into the series.
BQ8: This one is probably a little obvious: Steve of Code: Veronica. While his story arc was cool, GOD he was whiney.
BQ9: I wish it had the gameplay and over-the-shoulder perspective we now have in the RE series. The controls were admittedly clunky as hell in RE2, and while that definitely adds to the panic, it becomes a headache reeeeeal quick these days.
BQ6: the original resident evil was the hardest. I played it for the first time a couple months ago, and actually had to restart because I ran out of ammo. Ammo is incredibly scarce for the first half of the game, and I was constantly having to knife zombies and reload saves when I messed up and lost too much health while knifing. Later installments gave you more reasonable amounts of ammo.
RE2 is probably my favorite. Then again, the iconic mansion in RE1 is forever etched in my memory (especially the fantastic REmake version). I can't choose. RE1, 2, and 3 are all excellent.
Also, John Johnson and Ace Flibble are my new dtoid heroes.
Least favorite game: the umbrella/darkside chronicles, they were mere retelling of previous games, bringing nearly nothing new to the game.
Favorite weapon: Krauser's bow and arrow, a tie with ada's shotgun, just cause they're fun
Favorite Boss: None really, they were all variations on shoot the glowing target. I hope RE6 will have a better boss style, although fighting against wesker in RE5 was an improvement, albeit not much since it always came down to only one way of beating him.
Best Music: RE4 soundtrack, the ambience was just great.
Scariest: the original, it was way harder than any of the other ones, and when you were scared you had to either shoot all your ammo or run!
Hardest: the original, it required a finess that these newer ones just don't have. They throw fodder at you now, and don't make it much of a variety.
Favorite Character: Ada, she's everywhere behind the scenes yet they refuse to flush out her story, just makes you wanna know why even more.
Least Favorite: Spencer, you never fight him, all you do is see him die. Such a disappointment.
One thing to change: the plot has to come together again, and stop putting in characters that you kill off 2 hours later.
The old games were great for their time, but the controls were absolute total shit. The camera angles made for some nice scares and shit, but even those needed to go. RE4 simply brought RE out of the dark ages. The game was still scary, but not in the same way. It was more about the overwhelming amount of enemies and the sense of isolation the game gave you.
I don't mind if you dislike the game, but to say it is anything less than a real RE title is doing the title a great disservice and is pretty disrespectful to the creators of the game.
RE5 of course, is fair game for complaints. It was not scary at all.
Loved the creepy atmosphere
At the time, it was the pinnacle of Survival Horror and the game did not apologize for throwing sudden and creepy surprises at you. Multiple endings, speed runs, Tofu and Hunk, and unlockable costumes made it it's own.
BQ1- FUCK THE KNIFE
BQ2- Grenade Launcher with Acid Rounds was the way to go
BQ3- Leon vs Krauser. Awesome fight.
BQ4- RE5 had the best and most memorable, especially all of Wesker's fights
BQ5- Resident Evil REmake for the Gamecube. The graphics for it set the mood really well. Hunters and scarecrows gave me chills whenever they popped up
BQ6- Resident Evil 2. I say because of it's length and constant backtracking with stronger enemies depleting ammo faster, it made for a nice challenge.
BQ7- Albert Wesker before RE5. His mysterious nature is what attracted me to him. Plus he was a badass
BQ8- Salazar. Mediocre villian.
BQ9- ALL THE GODDAMN BACKTRACKING AND KEYS AND SHIT.
BQ1: What was your least favorite game in the series? Why?
The Longbow from RE5. Don't get me wrong, this is mostly out of my sheer uselessness at using it, but I could never kill Manjini/Ouroboros/Whatever efficiently with it. At all.
BQ2: What was your favorite weapon in the series? Why?
This one's easier. The 'Blacktail' pistol from RE4. Once you upgraded that motherfucker, it was basically unstoppable. The reload speed was godly, and it was probably the most used and most reliable weapon in my inventory.
BQ3: What was your favorite boss fight in the series? Why?
The Verdugo battle in RE4. Holy crap, was that intense. It was one of the most harrowing experiences I've gone through.
BQ4: Which game had the best music overall? Why?
To be honest, RE music hasn't been particularly memorable for me. But if I had to make a choice, RE2. That police station music had my nerves on end.
BQ5. Which game was the scariest? Why?
Easily RE1: Gamecube Remake, with RE2 and 3 (3 mainly due to Nemesis) lagging closely behind. Had the most tense atmosphere, and it gave a very palpatable atmosphere of fear and claustrophobia. It took me a few tries to get past the first few hours. It scared me to a point where I forgot the practicality of Spencer Mansion's convoluted door opening mechanic.
BQ6. Which game was the hardest? Why?
Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Y'know... I still haven't beaten it. Best dust off my ye olde Dreamcast version.
BQ7: Who is your favorite character in the whole series? Why?
Ugh... this is a little harder. I'm so tempted to vote Barry Burton just because of the unintentionally hilarious lines he consistently delivered, though I'm looking at it a tad more functionally here. It's a battle between Ada Wong and Claire Redfield... screw it, Ada. She's unquestionably the coolest RE character ever, this was something I felt in RE2, though RE4 solidified this. All through RE4, half of me was wishing I could see what Ada was doing at that moment. Saying I was overjoyed at Separate Ways in the PS2 version is an understatement.
BQ8: Who is your least favorite character from the whole series? Why?
Ashley. Why?
"Leon, help!"
BQ9: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the game you voted for this week.
This one was so simple, I actually grinned when I saw it. I'd enjoy RE4 a lot more if it allowed moving while shooting. I know that the concept was new, and I don't expect Capcom for it years after it's release, especially since moving while shooting would of been slightly difficult considering that it was originally developed for the GameCube (which was not very well suited for those kinds of mechanics) but still. A man can dream, can he not?
And as for naming something I'd like changed in the title I voted for, RE4, it would be the ability to walk, albeit slowly, when shooting. I'd say just copy the Dead Space way of doing it.
I doubt people being too young really affects this, A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario World all won. So if we were to look at it from an ageist perspective, the majority were old enough to have fond memories of the Super Nintendo and would be alive to remember the early Resident Evil games for Playstation.
As much as I LOVED Resident Evil 4, I have to go with either the REMake or Resident Evil 3 as my favorite. The atmosphere, was scary, it was actually a survival horror game, and it retained what Resident Evil was, and will always be in my heart : A game that was scary as hell.
I hope they go back at least once. Hope.
Plus the gameplay was much better then the previous games in my honest opinion.
BQ1: What was your least favorite game in the series? Why?
Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 was great, and I waited years for RE5, only to find a game that tried to capture the greatness of 4, but come short in every aspect except the fact that it was nice to look at and had multiplayer.
BQ2: What was your favorite weapon in the series? Why?
Shotguns.
BQ3: What was your favorite boss fight in the series? Why?
The Krauser fight in RE4 is pretty epic.
BQ4: Which game had the best music overall? Why?
RE1 Remake. It's so atmospheric, ambient and creepy. It just fits the game so perfectly.
BQ5. Which game was the scariest? Why?
RE1 Remake. I've never had another game make me turn off the console because I was too nervous to continue.
BQ6. Which game was the hardest? Why?
Resident Evil Zero.
BQ7: Who is your favorite character in the whole series? Why?
Jill Valentine.
BQ8: Who is your least favorite character from the whole series? Why?
Billy. Meh.
BQ9: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the game you voted for this week.
The save system from the older games is the only thing that really bothered me. Finding a typewriter and being out of ink ribbons is frustrating.
The pacing, atmosphere, sound design, and the varied amounts of enemies were my favorite aspects. Those Regenerators and Iron Maidens were the scariest things in that game.
BQ1: What was your least favorite game in the series?
3. I just couldn't get into it.
BQ2: What was your favorite weapon in the series?
The Magnum.
BQ3: What was your favorite boss fight in the series?
The U3 monster. Holy shit.
BQ4: Which game had the best music overall?
Eh...4?
BQ5. Which game was the scariest?
4. Regenerators and U3.
BQ6. Which game was the hardest? Why?
I found all of the remakes on the Gamecube to be difficult, if only because of the controls.
BQ7: Who is your favorite character in the whole series?
Leon. Duh.
BQ8: Who is your least favorite character from the whole series?
Barry.
BQ9: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the game you voted for this week.
I wish it was longer.
1. Resident Evil 5, sure, Resident Evil 1 was pretty bad but not horrible considering the time it was made for.
2. Definitely the Chicago Typewriter from Re4, I need not explain this.
3. My favorite boss fight is probably the Bella Sisters from Re4, it was pretty intense up against two chainsaws.
4. Re4 music was the best, because it actually added a creepy feel to the game.
5. Resident Evil 4 was the scariest, you know, because it actually had scary enemies and music.
6. Re5 was the hardest, not that that is a bad thing, because it means you have to really try.
7. The Merchant from Re4 is the best character for me, I probably don't have to explain why.
8. Chris. I fucking hate him. God damn serious little bitch. If your fighting zombies, you gotta be having a good time.
9. If there's a Re6, bring back everything in Re4, that game was fucking amazing, roll with it.
You know, it's true, the older games enemies were not as scary, although this is partly do to technical limitations at the time. The REmake'a remade creatures were scarier than the original, to prove the point.
But yeah, nothing like those regenerators and chainsaw dudes in RE4. Oh, and the big dudes with the claws.
And the things that pop out of enemies heads.
And yeah, also, the music is sweet.
BQ1: What was your least favorite game in the series? Why?
Oh god Outbreak. The only thing I like about it is the opening music, which is ironically one of the best scores in the series. But it can keep its pseudo-tank mechanics.
BQ2: What was your favorite weapon in the series? Why?
Infinite Rocket Launcher
BQ3: What was your favorite boss fight in the series? Why?
Hm. I would say Krauser's Commando stage, just because 1) he's my favorite character, and 2) the hilarity of having a random G.I. Joe/ Metal Gear skirmish in my Resident Evil.
BQ4: Which game had the best music overall? Why?
Deciding among: Biohazard Medley, the opening of Outbreak, the opening to RE4, and most of the music of RE5...well, nevermind, I'll give it to 5. It really had that going for it: Majini Battle 2 and 9, Wind of Madness (the greatest Wesker theme), and Pray. RE needs more orchestra.
BQ5. Which game was the scariest? Why?
Zero was my first RE game, and my first zombie game really. Train level had some great atmosphere.
BQ6. Which game was the hardest? Why?
Zero again, but that was just because I didn't know that there was a run button my first playthrough. Ups the difficulty significantly. Also, leech zombies are bitches.
BQ7: Who is your favorite character in the whole series? Why?
Eh, let's go with Krauser. He's like Venom to Leon's Spider-Man.
BQ8: Who is your least favorite character from the whole series? Why?
I can't say. Even Steve and Alfred were cooky enough to make me smile. It's like the goofier and hammier the character is in this series, the better.
BQ9: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the game you voted for this week.
Flesh out the Tyrant fight more. It was fine for the orginal, but really could have used some more strategy mechanics in the remake.
BQ1: outbreak series. Capcom should release them now, all planned "files" from 1 to 4 (of 2 released) with the "over the shoulder" view, and they may become very popular. Releasing the online-oriented game on PS2 wasn't the best idea.
BQ2:Bazooka from RE1. Most satisfying zombie kills in gaming history (well, except l4d pipebomb, of course):) (with explosive rounds) Handgun comes as second favorite.
BQ3: Maybe, the Nemesis fight, when you can hit the levers which can pour acid on him. It was the first (and almost the only) RE fight i can think of, where you can use environment to hurt the boss.
BQ4: A very hard choice, but i'll stick with RE2. But actually i love 1-3 music all the same.
BQ5: Well... i never thought RE was scary. Any of them. So, i guess the only honest answer will be RE1, because i was really scared the first time i found out that zombies don't die the first time they fall.
BQ6: That depends on what "hard" is - frustratingly/broken/cheating-hard or just hard. If the first one, then RE4, the hardest and most frustrating RE experience i ever had. If hardest as just hard and on normal difficulty... hmm... i guess REmake is the hardest one then.
BQ7: I'd say Barry, because i really love that guy, but he is rarely seen. So i'll say Wesker. It was really great to watch him (and play as him) in RE5. If Wesker is not a "valid" choice, then Jill:)
BQ8: Least favorite character will most likely be Alfred Ashford or Steve. Simply because they had awful voice actors. But if i had to choose of the "main cast", then i'd say Chris. Most boring character of the series.
BQ9: RE3 came as close to perfection of the "classic RE" formula as it could, so i don't even know what could've been improved without breaking "fun" in the classic formula. I just wish it would've been re-relesed today on all consoles in the exact same way as it looked and played but with fully-rendered scenes instead of prerender, more "3d-like" camera (like Dino crisis, for example) and had few things added to reference newer games in some way, so it looks better as a part of the series. Some special action-oriented mode with over the shoulder view and more RE5-styled gameplay would've been great too, but only as a second mode, not as a substitute for the almost perfect original.
I disagree with your assessment because the Resident Evil series just doesn't have the universal acclaim that the Mario and Zelda series have. Basically, to even call yourself a gamer, you had to have played Marios 1-3 and probably RPG and World, and you had to have played at least two of the following: Legend of Zelda; a Link to the Past; Link's Awakening; Ocarina of Time. People played all those games when they first came out, they were still playing them 15 or 20 years later, and they'll still being playing them in another 15 or 20 years. I really don't think that any of the Resident Evil games will be getting that much notice beyond the nostalgia of those who already played them. Thus, the reason that people know about Mario and Zelda games is because they went back and played them, whereas the RE series isn't legendary enough for people do to that with.
tl;dr - The RE series is incomparable to Mario or Zelda because RE just doesn't have the same staying power that those two pillars of the gaming world have.
Call me lazy, but I'll just take the bonus questions and answer them, other than a quick favorite RE game question. Like being in school! Only a cool school for a degree in zombie.
Favorite in the series: Resident Evil 5.
Okay, so it doesn't have the same adventure flow of most the old RE's. But RE5 has incredible graphics, ties up the story, has a great new character in Sheva and while co-op is debatable if it removes the scariness or lonliness feel of past games (actually, the lonliness being gone isn't debatable, obviously you're not alone, your friend is there talking to you on the mic)...but RE5 was still one of the best co-op games me and my wife ever played.
This was high quality, never dragged in it's pace, had the best story, tied up loose ends and certainly had the best controls of any RE game.
For all the remorse I have for seeing the adventuring aspect disappear into an action title, this was still the best and most fun of the series and a great game.
BQ1: What was your least favorite game in the series? Why?
For me, and I'll probably be the lone person to think this since it's usually so heralded, Resident Evil 4. Though part of it is unfair to the developers, since I hated having to play a Gamecube. Never could stand that controller.
Yeah, it came to PS2 eventually, but I only played the Gamecube version. So there.
For all it's praise, I thought the story was the weakest and most removed from the series, the game's locations weren't that interesting. It wasn't terrible as a game judged on it's own merits, but series-wise I've liked the interlinking stories of all the main RE games and this one didn't do it for me.
BQ2: What was your favorite weapon in the series? Why?
My feet. So I could run for my life.
BQ3: What was your favorite boss fight in the series? Why?
The whole Wesker ending of RE5. Not because it did something somehow better in the gameplay, it was fine but nothing innovative, but just because I'd played the whole series from the beginning on day one.
10 years or so with the series just brought a sense of...I don't know. Closure? It was simply fun to finally face the guy who betrayed everyone way back in the first game.
The sense of character history carried it as more involving. Just like the whole MGS4 thing.
BQ4: Which game had the best music overall? Why?
No opinion. I think back on my memories I remember moments, but for some reason not the music. That either means it did the job so well that it blended into the experience that it wasn't a distraction...or it was so bad I blocked it out. Let others rule on this one.
BQ5. Which game was the scariest? Why?
Resident Evil 3. Maybe not now with how it aged, but back then when Nemesis showed up for the first time coming right at you and you just tried all your weapons with nothing working and he's right ontop of you and you had to run for your life down city streets with those terrible controls....Controls might have had me swearing, but they did the job at making me get into it and get the feeling I was going to die.
That was a good gaming moment in my life.
BQ6. Which game was the hardest? Why?
It's a tie for Resident Evil 1, 2, or 3 on PS1 (not talking Cube remake or Dreamcast ports here, even though I played all those too). Because of the controls.
Actually, lets give the nudge to 3. Because some of those rushed moments, the running, were bordering on impossible with the control scheme and the other two had less running.
BQ7: Who is your favorite character in the whole series? Why?
Wesker. All about the greater good and actually wanting to help the world be a better place, but was tripped up by his own meglomania making him lose sight and become a dangerous villian when in his heart he was trying to be a hero.
I relate to that.
BQ8: Who is your least favorite character from the whole series? Why?
Leon. Something about his boy band haircut. That's really all the reason I have in why. But it's enough. I'd be happy to never see him again.
BQ9: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the game you voted for this week.
I vote for RE5, but I wish they had slowed down the pace and had more of the adventuring of the first three games, so it had more of the Resident Evil "feel" instead of the Gears Of War meets Resident Evil feel (Resident War?).
And they still need to work on making the inventory screens being less cumbersome.
BQ1:As far as worst I would say 0. Sweet tap dancing christ that game was lame. If I was counting the offshoots I would say Resi outbreak File 2 but I do not count those
BQ2: shotgun. There are other more interesting ones but the shotgun is the most useful.
BQ3: The second to last fight with the Nemesis in 3. There is one point in it that scared the shit out of me and it is probably one of the scariest moments that I have ever come across in a game.
BQ5: 3. Nemesis is one scary ass motherfucker.
BQ6: 3 again. Doesn't even have a normal setting. Just easy and hard.
BQ7: Barry
BQ8: Steve from Veronica. Probably the most annoying character ever conceived in the series
BQ9: The last chapter could have used some work. They supplied you with way too much ammo so it wasn't as intense as previous chapters and it made the last boss too easy.
The fear and intensity I felt from playing that game has yet to be matched in any other RE game. Plus, it had Jill Valentine.
See, it's like tradition for me and my buddy Ty to play through the RE games together. We would always just take turns playing, so with RE5 adding co-op, that made it a whole new experience. Exactly what we wanted. But still, it's hard for me to say which is the best. 1, 2, & 4 are just too good.
Just scanned through some thread and saw you wondering people's ages, to get better perspective on their views. Which I think is a great point.
So I'll bite. I'm 35, played videogames since day one that the Atari 2600 came into stores, got new console after new console all my life. I play all styles of games, owned all the consoles in "console wars" over the years and could care less about bias towards certain corporations. I don't favor one machine over another, just which game is truly the best quality.
There you go. Should put some understanding on my Resident Evil experiences.
I totally agree with you, knowing people's ages would bring more understanding to where their viewpoints come from.
BONUS QUESTIONS:
BQ1: I haven't played any of the non-main releases (Outbreak, the shooters, handheld, etc.), so other than those I'd say 3 was my least favorite. It was very action oriented, but not in a good way like RE4
BQ2: Favorite weapon? Shotgun, of course!
BQ3: The first time you fight William Burkin in RE2. Or the Alligator in RE2, if only because that simple puzzle to kill the gator.
BQ4: RE2. That police station as you enter. Just great.
BQ5. REmake. Because I thought I knew that mansion...
BQ6. Hardest? I dunno. Maybe 3, simply because of Nemesis.
BQ7: Claire. She was my first. After that though, I gotta give my props to Barry. Oh, and I can't forget the Ashford Twins, simply for being fucked up!
BQ8: Least fav? Sherry. That's the little girl from 2, right? She adds nothing really. It wasn't a challenge to be her, she added nothing to the story, and was just plain annoying.
BQ9: Umm... it could use an REmake-like HD update for modern consoles...
Btw, i recently posted about enemies opening doors in my ukrainian gaming blog analogue of destructoid's "memory card"
Capcom introduced this concept in Dino Crisis in a cinematic way. (dinosaur suddenly bursting in the room and jumping on the table, breaking it, was awesome)
