Game Debate to the Death! Resident Evil movie series photo

Leeloo Milla Jovovich stares deep into your soul. Last week we discussed which Resident Evil games were the best and worst in the whole series, and as promised, this week we take a break from gaming to debate which Resident Evil film is the best. Before you grab your popcorn or blindfolds, here are the top results from last week. The complete lack of a landslide might surprise you!

  • Favorite Resident Evil game:
  • Resident Evil 4 (35 votes) -- Winner!
  • Resident Evil 2 (29 votes)
  • Resident Evil GameCube remake (12 votes)
  • Resident Evil 3 (9 votes)
  • Least favorite Resident Evil game:
  • Resident Evil 5 (12 votes) -- Loser!
  • Resident Evil 3 (6 votes)
  • Resident Evil 4 (5 votes) -- tie!
  • Resident Evil Zero (5 votes) -- tie!

As some of the readers picked up on, it looks like every other Resident Evil game in the main series has had tremendous success. RE 2 was a huge hit, RE 3 gathered mixed reactions, RE 4 was overwhelming, and RE 5 underwhelmed. So should we expect great things from RE 6? With Capcom suggesting that a Resident Evil 6 game would be a complete reboot of the series, my guesses are that the RE pattern may continue.

The Resident Evil movie series will surely also continue on for many more years. Which film do you like the most out of the entire Resident Evil series, and why? What set it apart from the other movies in the series? Give it some serious thought, share your thought process with all of us, and then get some friends who also enjoy Resident Evil films to join in on the fun. Hit the jump for new bonus questions and next week's debate topic!

BONUS QUESTIONS:

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?

SUBMIT YOUR OWN QUESTIONS FOR NEXT WEEK:

Each week I will post what next week's debate will be, and allow you to all post your own "bonus questions" in the comments for next week's debate. I'll choose the best of the bunch and then we can get some serious feedback from all different gamer perspectives on not just each game/series, but also a few individual aspects of those games/series. Have something you're dying to know what other games thought of in the game or series? Post your question in the comments and find out what the response is!

I've only seen the first, and that was just because of Podtoid's commentary. It was quite awful, but by far the best moment in the movie was towards the beginning when Milla Jovovich woke up with amnesia. She saw a notepad with a message on it, and tried writing the same thing in order to compare the handwriting, to see if she was the one who wrote it.

It was just a nice, subtle touch in a movie in desperate need of them.

I watched the first one and it was incredibly meh from what I remember. Maybe saw the second one, but if so it's so bland I can't distinguish it from the first.

BQ2: The Fifth Element.
BQ3: Probably any seen with DJ Ruby Rhod. Green! Green! SUPER GREEN!
BQ4: The Fifth Element.
BQ5: RE prolly wins here. Yeah. Yes, it does.
BQ6: The aliens and villain in cahoots came off kind of weak, in a way that they never seemed worthy or capable of doing any evil.
BQ7: The Passion of Christ Wii?
BQ8: World of Warcraft, both live action (can't wait) AND another one in all CG (fingers crossed).
BQ9: Multipass.

Wow...the consensus of this site really gets me. Just look at the top 50, and the mario one, and this...I'm pretty much in agreement with all of it. The only question I would like to know the answer to is, Which Fallout is the best/worst?

The first movie was the only one to really try to be inline with the series canon. However it had a hollywood tweak to it, making it into it's own entity entirely. Unfortunately, they took that small tweak in story and direction and leapt on it like a fat cat on a small mouse toy. (Poor kitty isn't getting skinnier no matter how long you play with him Travis). :(

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?
RE:Extinction. It just took the Resident Evil story, and made it into every post-apocalyptic desert movie. It's like Mad Max without the cool parts. (i.e. they only kept the desert setting)
BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
Yes.... I own the first 2, saw the third in theaters and I wanted my time back after.
BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
I have yet to listen to the podtoid commentary, but I gotta put a line in for the Red Queen's laser light room in the first one. That stuff was straight out of Cube.
BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
Yes, The Fifth Element was much better than any of the Resident Evil movies. Much more entertaining humor and the story is at least coherent.
BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
I own Ultraviolet on Blu-Ray... I don't ever plan on having Resident Evil: Extinction in my house.
BQ6: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the movie you voted for this week.
I wish they changed the setting. The games all stem from a timeline where the breakout of infections aren't so ultimately out of control that they have decimated the earth. Sure it takes place in the Nevada desert, but how much more cliche' can you get. Weak.
BQ7: What's your favorite movie based on a video game?
Super Mario Brothers and Double Dragon rate pretty high, but they don't topple the Street Fighter movie by any means. Definitely my favorite, Street Fighter. It's not a GOOD movie, but it's a beer and pretzels movie if there ever was one.
BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?
BlazBlue would be a great game to have a movie made out of it. I know everyone is all "Lol anime" about the game, but maybe if they made a movie, the story would finally all make sense.
BQ9: Multipass.

I'm going to cheat and say Resident Evil Degeneration...the CG movie that came out a year ago. I really enjoyed that. It was like watching a cutscene for two hours. Beautiful.

If you are merely reffering to the crap live action films...The first film is easily the best, because while it is campy...it was atleast okay. 2 was worth watching to see Jill Valentine. Oh dear.

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?

3. It was painful to watch. It tried to argue that the T-virus could infect the water and dry it up making everything a desert. As an environmental scientist, I find this absurd.

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?

Yes. Unfortunately. I'm a huge RE fan and while I know they aren't going to live up to one of my favourite videogame series, I can't help myself.

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?

Seeing Jill Valentine look sexy in the second film.

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?

The 5th element rivals my distate for the RE live action film series.

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?

Wtf is Ultraviolent? Oh dear god, now I'm going to watch this film and its going to be all your fault, Fronz. I'll thank you now for making my eyes bleed.

BQ6: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the movie you voted for this week.

Nearly everything.

BQ7: What's your favorite movie based on a video game?

Resident Evil Degeneration

BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?

Killer 7 would be pretty epic.

I just looked around the living room and saw BlazBlue, but even re-reading my comment, I realized that NMH would make an awesome and ridiculous movie.

4 is absolutely one of the best RE's in my book...in fact, it's one of the most recent games that made me feel giddy with how much I was enjoying it as I played, and I continued for another run with gusto. Of course, I love upgrading stuff, and am an RPGer at heart.

BQ1: RE2...it just had nothing interesting going on
BQ2: Almost...I don't know if I ever finished RE2.
BQ3: Don't recall exactly, but the scenes where Milla showed off her badass powers were awesome. And when she discovers all her clones...creepy.
BQ4: I like 5th Element more because it had better action, hotter Milla (loved that hair), and because it was much more vibrant with great actors, characters, and action.
BQ5: I think so...Ultraviolet was a blurry mess with absolutely nothing going for it.
BQ6: NA
BQ7: I don't think I can name one. The Wizard immediately comes to mind, so I'll stick with that.
BQ8: God of War, I think. Followed by Sands of Time!

The first film was the best when you consider what it came from and what they had to work with. The fact that in one of the most pivotal scenes most of the backdrop is made of cardboard cut-outs says a lot about the task they had just getting it off the ground. I can't imagine too many people on here really followed the development of the first Resi film but in short, Capcom completely screwed them over (which incidently is why althogh the first film is a direct prequel to the first game, the second and third films strayed completely away from the game worlds). They did a helluva lot with their $30m budget (which sounds a lot, but to put that into perspective the terrible third Terminator film had a budget of $200m). Sure, the acting and script was hammy at times, but so were the Resi games back then too. The effects were okay given the relatively low budget (again, we're talking about a film that had to make-do with cardboard cut-out scenery), the soundtrack was good, the action set pieces were decent, it was (originally) a perfect prequel to the games in terms of the plot and most of all it reignited zombie films (an achievement often wrongly awarded to 28 Days Later, which actually came afterwards and wasn't, to be honest, much of a zombie film). I also have always really loved that they never actually use the word 'zombie' in the film and all the Alice In Wonderland references.

Actually I could rant for hours about the first film. First time I saw it at the cinema, I think I was 14 and it was the first zombie film I'd seen at the cinema. Scared the crap out of me, I literally could not sleep that night. Went back the next day and saw it again twice in a row. Since then I think I've seen it something like forty-odd times.
I am unashamed to say I own all three Resi films on DVD and am eagerly awaiting the fourth. They're fun mindless entertainment, I don't see why anyone - let alone so many people - complain about them.

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?
Resi 3, because Claire really wasn't anything like game-Claire. That's been my only 'oh no it wasn't like the game wah wah wah' complaint I've had with any of the films. RE:Degeneration is also worth a mention, that was really terrible though it's not really part of the film series so I suppose it doesn't count.

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
Yes. Far too much.

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
Resi 1, when Alice thinks Rain has died on the train - great callback to RE3:N.

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
Beyond both having Milla Jovovich in 'em, I fail to see the correlation. Fifth Element isn't that great really. Take out multipass and there's not much good going for it.

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
Definitely, because Ultraviolet was a a terrible piece of perma-Photoshopped shite.

BQ6: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the movie you voted for this week.
Only think I didn't like about Resi 1 and most definitely could have been improved was One's death in the laser hallway. It was cool to see someone get sliced up into tiny cubes but it made no sense for him to justs tand there and take it when he clearly had another 8-9 feet of hall behind him he could have backed in to.

BQ7: What's your favorite movie based on a video game?
Resident Evil 1, without a doubt.

BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?
Vagrant Story. There is no game that screams for the cinema more than that.

BQ9: Multipass.

I fully understand and completely realize the producers of the RE movies were going for a unique turn with the movie series based on the video game, yet I didn't like any of them. Honestly, they were each rotten.
If they were going to change so much about what we loved about the game(s), they should have just titled them something else. It's obvious the studio suits were just trying to cash in on the game's name.
Also, House of the Dead.

Favorite was RE1. I thought it was OK, and it had some cool parts. Not a terrible movie by any stretch.

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?
2. God it sucked. I don't really even have to give a reason. Give me a reason it was good.

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
No, after 2 I never wanted to see another. 3 looked retarded.

BQ3: BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
Laser part in 1 was cool. I also liked it when the girl in the water opened her eyes.

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
The only thing keeping me from seeing that movie is Mila Jovovich (or whatever the hell her name is). I can't stand her. She might be my least favorite actor. She crapped all over RE1 as well, but not bad enough to ruin the movie for me.

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
I guess. I saw like 10 minutes of Ultraviolet and wanted to kill myself. At least RE2 was sort of watchable, even if it sucked.

BQ6: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the movie you voted for this week.
Replace Mila Jovovich.

BQ7: What's your favorite movie based on a video game?
Super Mario Bros movie. I saw it when I was little and I loved it. I know it's terrible, so I don't watch it anymore, and I don't look at clips. I don't need to go back and retroactively fuck up my childhood anymore than it already is. I'm just happy with the memories, even if they are false.

BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?
Metroid. No, they would fuck that up. None then. Just please stop destroying my childhood Hollywood. Actually, they've made Alien video games. Make another Alien movie. And have it not suck please. Seriously, it's not hard to do. Just put the Alien on screen, have it be badass, keep Predator the fuck away from the entire production, and stop writing shitty dialogue. In fact, you can keep writing shitty dialogue. Aliens had shitty dialogue, and it was great. And don't butcher the fuck out of it in post like you did with Alien 3. Dammit.

I really feel that the Resident Evil movies could have been potential blockbusters, but all I really see is the director's mary sue( Alice).
The story is constantly centered around Alice, no matter what.
It takes away almost what the franchise is all about, which are the characters and Umbrella's crazy subordinates.
So long are the heroes and the heroins that make up the series in general, it has now evolved around one single person while the others play as mere "sidekicks".
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate them being in the movie in the first place, but I feel as if the movies where just a well written fanfic...Well, somewhat. Hell, by the third movie,it just reached maximum when it came to umbrella's "Special B.O.W". I can appreciate new characters for the sake of the film, but I really feel that I have Alice constantly shoved in my face on how great and powerful she is. Ok, I get it OMG ALICE IS SO STRONG!
She's not a bad and I don't hate the character, I just don't like that the entire movie being eveloved around her entire life story when that isn't what it should be about.

1. The third one. It wasn't as exciting as it should be. The world has already gone to the shitter so when it does hit the fan, it's not so surprising as it should be. Only if newly formed B.O.Ws where still forming and there where still a good amount of survivors, it would be fun to see everything turn into the tenth level of hell.

2.(Sigh) Yes,I am a sad RE fangirl. It's like a car crash, you know it's going to be bad, but you still have to see what it looks like.

3. Heh, in the second one, I really enjoyed the part when the Nemesis approached the store with all the S.T.A.R.S members and shot up the whole place.

4. The Fifth Element is a classic that will always stay fresh, especially if you haven't seen it in a while. While I find Resident Evil movies something to watch if there is nothing else on HBO. "Eh, I have nothing else better to do."

5. I'm going to have to be fikkled on this one, I really could care less for either.

6.As I mentioned in my rant earlier, I really can't stand the whole mary sue going on with Alice.

7. Mortal Kombat. Or Double Dragon, for the lulz, oh the memories.

8.Parasite Eve, that would be pretty interesting, plus, a forgotten classic in my opinion.

9.Blarg.

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?
Resident Evil 2, because the first is fine, the third is at least funny and a little fun, but the second... oh God, the second. It's just a bomb thrown at your face. And when it explodes, you just... feel the smell of shit.

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
Yes, I have. Including Degeneration, btw that is the best of the movies. But that doesn't count, because it's not a live action movie. Right?

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
Michelle Rodriguez becoming a zombie. Why? Because she's a badass. And as a zombie, she's even more badass.

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
Umm... let's say no, because I didn't watch so...

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
Didn't watched that movie either. But i'm pretty sure that the 1st RE movie is better than Ultraviolet.

Umm... Nemesis good guy? That was total bullshit. I didn't had to see that. That was so stupid and... oh gosh, that was just bullshit. Just bullshit.

Silent Hill. It's just great, I mean... it's an adaptation, no big relations with the game with the exception of some characters... but yeah. That movie awesome, at least for me.

Would be Extinction, sucks donkey balls! I did like how they used the tyranta at the end but they could have done a better job on the character model itself

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
Seen em all. 1 was ok, 2 was awesome, 3 stunk worse than rhino ass

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
When Aice rode in on the bike and started shooting up the Lickers in the Church in Apocolypse and just so smoothly and sexily spun the guns around on her fingers before inserting them into the holsters. Damn that was kinda kinky, no?

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
Wow kind got mixed feelings on that one. I loved 5th Element and Apocolypse.

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
Oh God yes, even though Extinction sucked it was far far far better than ultraviolet. For one thing there was no Mila boobies, automatic fail right there.

Aside from being bitter at the loss of Resident Evil 2 in last week's poll, I hate ALL video game movies. As a film fan, I'm angry for every atrocious movie that's made and receives more attention than some gems out there. As a video game fan, I'm angry that oftentimes the best representation of games to the general public is through these turds.

Favorite in the series is the second. Simply because of Nemesis really, even if he was wrong.

BQ1: What was your least favorite movie in the series? Why?
The third one. Felt more like Terminator with Zombies than Resident Evil really.

BQ2: Have you seen all of the Resident Evil movies?
Yes. For some reason.

BQ3: What was your favorite scene in the entire movie series? Why?
To be honest, I don't know. Nothing about any of them strikes me as particularly memorable. Except perhaps the cliché "running along in slowmo while glass shatters" scene.

BQ4: Do you like The Fifth Element more than your favorite Resident Evil movie? Why or why not?
Fifth Element. Just so happens to be one of my favorite movies ever. I mean, it does pretty much everything right, from humour to setting to badass weapons that self-destruct. So yeah.

BQ5: Do you like your least favorite Resident Evil movie more than you liked Ultraviolet? Why or why not?
Ultraviolet I thought was pretty awful. In fact no, really awful. Resident Evil at least had SOME good scenes, I can't think of anything I liked about Ultraviolet without rewatching it. And I really don't want to.

BQ6: Name one thing you didn't like, or wish was improved, in the movie you voted for this week.
Closer to the storyline of RE3. But then again, I could say that about the entire series, needs to be more of a horror film than an action film, much like the new games need to be more horror than action games.

BQ7: What's your favorite movie based on a video game?
Silent Hill. Just because it actually captured SOME of the feeling of the game.

BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?
Halo. District 9 was frigging amazing, that studio working on a Halo film would be amazing, provided it is a proper story based film, not an EXPLOSIONS HURR TEABAGGING JOKE film.

While I still think RE2 should have won last week, there's no other game that it should have lost to besides RE4.

As with the RE movies (most unnecessary debate ever... I thought it was a joke when it was hinted at last week), I'm gonna go with Degeneration. It's light years ahead of any of the live action movies.

I think my bitterness for the first movie comes from the fact that George Fucking Romero was originally the director... but instead we got this Paul W.S. Anderson (Uwe Boll lite).

great to see RE2 almost win last week! I would love to see a remake with resi4 gameplay.

this weeks debate is easy. all the movies are absolutly junk. thats it. they just ruined the name of the games and I still hope some smart director will take the franchise and reboot it. but if I MUST choose one, I have to say the first one, because it was nice to see umbrela and t-virus and the licker in a movie for the first time, then we realise the story and characters are lame and then cant take it anymore.

the worst is the third because the plot have nothing to do with any of the games, but the second is close behind, really, Alice beating nemesis on a hand to hand combat? jesus, no more comments.

btw, Milla must adore making movies where she is a badass lady and beat the crap out of everybody.. all resident evils, fifth element, ultraviolet, etc. whats her problem

I must say Hitman, the movie wasnt that good, but it didnt ruined the game at all. With Silent Hill close behind, the first half was perfect but then they inverted the cult's purpose, filled the movie with peopple, forgot about piramid head and took the story far away from the game.

BQ8: What video game would you most like to see get a movie adaptation?
I would love to see a Galerians or a Parasite Eve adaptation. great stories, great plots.

I guess I'd pick RE2, it was actiony but had plenty of decent horror moments. It was big and dumb and violent, just what I'd probably expect from the series.

BQ1: I dunno...RE1 wasn't exactly anything special. Degeneration also has some fantastically awful moments, but none of them were bad, they're just dumb, popcorn entertainment.
BQ2: Yep.
BQ3: That crow seen in the third one's kind cool, I guess. And all the dead Milla Jovovich's in a ditch made me think of ET so that was a good part.
BQ4: Yes. The Fifth Element had style. Resident Evil has not.
BQ5: Haven't seen Ultraviolet.
BQ6: I 'unno. It's not a very good movie...
BQ7: I just said it wasn't a very good movie, but probably that RE2. Kinda like the Street Fighter movie too. It's really bad, but in a good way.
BQ8: None! No more adaptations into film.

Degeneration is the best RE film. Stays in cannon, has actual RE characters that I care about, and introduces a new female protagonist that isn't a complete disgrace.

That's not to say I didn't garner a certain enjoyment out of the first two Milla RE films, but the third one stinks. I think of the live action RE movies as fan-fictions, or alternate realities, and what I really like about RE is held in the games. Degeneration kept to those, and thus wins.

I'm going to have to choose throwing acid into my eyes.
Throwing acid into my eyes is the best Resident Evil movie ever.

The first RE movie was awesome. I never understood why all the hardcore gamers hated it when it came out. It's probably the only videogame movie I can show my non-gamer friends and not be embarrassed.
