Game Debate to the Death! Red Faction: Guerrilla VS inFamous photo

After much discussion and deliberation, the previous debate has finally come to an end. I expected an onslaught of opinions from both sides, and I definitely wasn't disappointed, but towards the end of the comments something was gnawing at my gut. I love seeing new faces pop-up on Dtoid, even if they're faceless default Dtoid avatars.

However, when one side is winning by a healthy margin, only to fall in flames as the other side rallies to a win atop the raised hands of a bunch of new accounts or readers who only comment twice a year, then, well, I feel the need to verify the votes before posting the results. So after a lengthy recess of going through each and every comment one by one to make sure there was no dupe accounts or other debauchery going on -- which there thankfully was not -- here are the final results:

  • Prototype (66 votes)
  • inFamous (87 votes) -- Winner!

This week we take another reader suggestion and pit the winner against Red Faction: Guerrilla -- a recent game that Vexed Alex thinks is better than both the two above titles. So what about you? Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What are some other debates you'd like to see? C'mon, gimme somethin' juicy!

part of my inner schizophrenic has been silently sitting in the back of my mind for a decade or so, twiddling his thumbs waiting for the game industry to continue paths that stopped being paved long long ago. destructible environments? shelved. sure, you can chalk it up to not having the technology needed at the time, but when you ask what was bumped to the top of the list instead -- a billion continual graphics improvements -- you realize that's kind of a bullshit excuse. stop being lazy and simple and cliche. there's plenty of other ways to run all the way to the bank. visuals aren't everything. guitar hero and rock band are enjoying the audio path immensely. can we finally get some fucking realistic environments and A.I. in this industry? yes? we can? kthxbye.

VOTE: Red Faction: Guerrilla.

I really enjoyed inFamous but I just haven't had an urge to even try Red Faction.

Also, I'd like to see:

Devil May Cry vs. God of War
Okami vs. Twilight Princess
Blazblue vs. Street Fighter 4
Mass Effect vs. Fallout 3
Killzone 2 vs. Halo 3

My list could go on indefinitely.

Hell, we just got Red Faction and I haven't had a chance to play it yet.
But I played through Infamous and actually ended up not liking it very much at all, mostly because it is fucking boring - on the other hand I loved the Red Faction demo.

So I'm giving it to -- RED FACTION -- because it can't possibly disappoint me as much as Infamous did.
If it does, I will kill myself. With electricity.

Capcom or SNK?

Yeah, I got nothin'

Red Faction has a lot of things I value in a game. It's interesting, it's a fun setting, it's sci-fi, it's got cool weapons, and great multiplayer. But I think inFAMOUS outclasses it in almost every way. It doesn't drag on longer than necessary, the combat is interesting and unique throughout, it retains a solid amount of replay value in the alignment system, the story is presented in a visually pleasing manner (I'm a big comic book fan), and Cole has a surprising amount of character, as opposed to... whats-his-face-man-guy.

My vote: inFAMOUS.

Infamous. I played both demos and went with infamous. I don't regret it but I do hope to borrow Red Faction from a friend someday.

my votes for Red Faction: Guerrilla

Infamous was a good game and I'll pick it up when it's down to $19.99-29.99 but Guerrilla was the most fun game I've played this year (lost and damned / Fallout 3 DLC not withstanding.

Just something cathartic about the destruction in Guerrilla.

I haven't played either, and normally I would say that I won't vote, but fuck it. Red Faction. inFamous looks like boring, repetitive, unoriginal garbage to me. Even if Red Faction is the same, at least they are trying with the destructible environments, something which most developers just half ass, even though it is way more important than graphics imo. What does inFamous have? A morality system? Yeah, I'm sure that worked out great...

RED FACTION WINS: because it does have true non-linearity in some parts, and near infinite re-playability because of it and the destructability the mission may be defend this base, or kill this person but eatch time you play
the mission (or the game) and its gonna be different

Red Faction made blowing shit up fun again, but the realization that once again no other game will ever borrow the Geo Mod tech makes me sad.

InFamous, on the otherhand, was just a poorly made game and could have used another year of work.

I vote Red Faction.

I haven't played a game that just focuses on being fun in a long time. Red Faction ditches the awful convoluted story of both inFAMOUS and Prototype and goes straight for the jugular.

Whatever that means...

Ahh, whatever. Red Faction is just fun - inFAMOUS isn't!

No idea on what game is best, but I do know what debate we need.

Portal Gun vs. Gravity Gun

Not exactly a "game" debate, but seriously, how could anyone expect me to make that decision?

I wasn't impressed with Red Faction just playing the demo off PSN, looked alright I suppose but I'm waiting for it to hit the bargain bin before getting it.

Infamous gets my vote. The title interested me from the moment I heard it. And I wasn't disappointed. I loved the atmosphere. I loved the environment. Everything about the game was great (except for chain link fences). Even though I will admit that probably an extra few months for some more polishing up wouldn't have hurt the game (it's not perfect after all) since it felt like the release was rushed because of the competition with Prototype. Red Faction on the other hand just couldn't interest me. I downloaded both the single and multiplayer demo. But I just couldn't bring myself to play them. I had no interest.

Bonus: I have to agree with Havoc Fang. I would love to see a debate based on a series such as MGS. Seeing the reasons why someone votes for this game in a series over that one would actually be amusing. But any series would do. Prince of Persia, Reachet & Clank, the various Mario games, etc, etc. Another interesting idea would be remakes vs. the originals. Of course the debate I would like to see between two different games/series would have to be this:

Twisted Metal (the series) vs. Vigilante 8 (the series)

inFamous, because the story was just more impactful from the beginning.

I really dig games that open with a huge mysterious event. Red Faction just couldn't get me to care within the first 30 minutes of play. The character has zero motivation.
