Last week was one of the closest debates we've ever had. For the first fifty to sixty comments there was a steady tie as both games refused to back down. Eventually one game's momentum brought home a win, but just barely. Here are the results:
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (51 votes) -- Winner!
- Professor Layton and the Curious Village (41 votes) -- Objection!
It's interesting that half the votes for each side were cast with obvious indecisiveness, so both games should be proud of their performances. This week we move on to what will most likely be another nail-biter photo finish. This showdown was brought up numerous times a few weeks ago when I asked for DS suggestions, so let the (puzzle) games begin!
Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some DS friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.
Bonus Question: What was one thing you didn't like about the game you voted for?

Henry Hatsworth.
Take that as you may.
Vote: Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure
Bonus: some cheap tricks here and there in the game, other than that, it's grand.
So I have to go with Henry Hatsworth.
And to answer your bonus question, I hate how ridiculously easy the first two worlds are, then you are immediately flooded with enemies by world 3 and later. How unprepared I was.
I put an insane amount of time in Puzzle Quest and give props to any game that can keep me coming back with it's addictive qualities. Mixing puzzling and RPGing is a pretty sweet deal.
But I've been Playing Hatsworth for a week straight now, practically non-stop. The personality just -shines- throughout this game. The added nastiness of managing both a puzzle game and a platformer that I'd gladly play on its own, well, it tips the hat!
Vote: Henry Hatsworth!
Bonus question: This game was amazing, but it gave us Galactrix, which was a letdown of the highest intensity. Basically the glory of the first game caused me to buy a shitty game. But the original is still amazing.
Puzzle Quest was fun as hell but pretty damn broken and glitchy too. Also the dialogue was hilariously awful. If they could make a sequel that fixes all the problems and make it seem like the computer AI isn't rampantly cheating, it'd get my vote and money.
I vote for Hatsworth.
The first thing that drew me to Henry Hatsworth, other than the classy hat, monocle and tea, was the fact that EA of all people decided to do a throwback game to the old school platformers, which I had more than my share of back in the days of the Genesis and Super Nintendo And it had a puzzle twist, which appealed to me even more.
The day I walked into my local Gamestop, I had 30 bucks to blow and it was either that, Puzzle Quest Galactrix, or Moon. Now, Moon was the first eliminated just because of the fact that it was 20 bucks the week earlier (which I'm still kicking myself for). So when it came down to Classy Guy Puzzle Adventure or PQ:Galactrix, it was a very difficult decision. I am a avid PQ fan, owning the DS version of Challenge, so I basically knew what i was getting myself into. But the very idea that this game successfully (judging by what i had read in reviews) combines the values and properties of a puzzle game AND a platformer, which sounded more interesting to me than a mix of RPG and Bejeweled. Sure I could also blow it on New Super Mario or MarioKart or the newest Mega Man Zero game, but I decided to follow my gut and my heart for Hatsworth.
There were some things that I didn't like about Puzzle Quest. Whenever the opponent somehow luckily got the perfect combo chain and could destroy me in one hit afterward was disheartening to say the least. And the amount of grinding I had to do was just frankly not worth it, this coming from a guy whose been through just about all Final Fantasies and Personas. Plus just the seemingly low production quality also furthered that point.
Now don't get me wrong, there are some things about Henry Hatsworth that rub me the wrong way. The staggering difficulty that hits you in the face in world 3 was just mind blowing, but it was a welcome advancement, considering the first 2 worlds were a cakewalk. I also didnt enjoy and never do are the invisible walled sections were you walk into a small portion of platform and get stuck there while a wave of enemies bombard you. It shows poor level design and an all around break in what should be seamless action with small but necessary stops for puzzling.
All around, I though Henry Hatsworth was much more enjoyable. Does it last as long as PQ? No. Does it get its money worth more than PQ? No. But Henry Hatsworth does get my vote for better game because of an overall greater use of the DS's hardware and a much appreciated throwback and fan service to the old school platformer.
TL;DR Henry Hatsworth
Also I'm amazed Layton even came that close. I guess at least some people can see it's a vastly superior game. Afterall, these are game debates.
Because Bejeweled is unfun, slow and chance-based while Tetris Attack is fun, fast-paced, and skill-based.
Bonus: Agh Crippling Difficulty Curve.
Because as much as i loved PQ on XBLA i found the Ds version difficult to control and i can only play match 3 for so long. Henry Hatsworth mixes it up with some genuinely challening platforming. Also, once you get a few particular spells for PQ you're pretty much unbeatable. Hatsworth is a constant challenge :)
However, I've started REALLY getting into Henry Hatsworth. Like REALLY. The blend of puzzle and platforming works so damn well. The charm of it is so damn good. I love this game
and so, my vote is for Henry Hatsworth!
Tea Time!
PROTIP: You can go to the official site at www.henryhatsworth.com/ and download the game's soundtrack, all free and legal like.
Henry Hatsworth found a perfect balance between hand / eye skill and the "Tetris Attack"-style puzzling is much more enjoyable and balanced than the "one move and you're dead" stylings of PQ.
My vote would definitely go to Henry Hatsworth. (Even if its fourth-world boss is twenty times easier than its third world boss!)
Both games also have ridiculous difficulty curves, though in opposite directions. I'd rather have a game challenge me to the last boss than let me "pwn" my enemies with spell spam.
..er, Hatsworth. I loved Puzzle Quest and all, but I loved the combination puzzle and platforming experience better. That, and Puzzle Quest is severely luck-based. Tell me how many times an enemy you should easily curbstomp has somehow managed to beat you? It's even worse in Galactrix!
Bonus: The difficulty is the best answer. Things start taking off single hearts per attack early in the first world, and you lose your superwtfpwnagerobot charge if you lose your silver hearts. Which, for boss battles or cage matches, can really screw you hard. But if you want a second answer, the fact that you can't refight bosses. It's not a feature in many games, but it would have been perfect in this one. Taking on enemies with new powers and all...
I daresay it's probably one of the best games i've seen on the Nintendo DS for a looooong time.

Bonus question: I didnt like the attacking skills animations, or better, the lack of them
