Game Debate to the Death! Prototype VS inFamous photo

Last week's debate was the last odd game debate in our almost year long journey! It also ended with one of the best "odd debate" matchups of the entire series, with a legendary multiplayer game with virtually no story going up a legendary single player game that oozes in verbal detail. Even though Valve didn't create the initial spark in Portal, I think the torch has officially been passed. Don't worry, we'll get some Team Fortress 2 debates going in a few months. Here are last week's results:

  • Portal (65 votes) -- "Terrorists. Lose." -- Winner!
  • Counter-Strike (37 votes)

This week we go back to our debate roots, picking random reader suggested game discussions over which game, series, developer, genre, console, characters or anything else you're interested in, is the best out of group of options. This year's worth of odd debates has bought us plenty of time to keep from running dry, so I'm looking for some really interesting reader debate ideas!

So which game do you think is better, and why? They're both mindless fun games that feel like twins in some aspects, and definitely cater to the same crowds of gamer audiences. There's already been countless debates between the two, so let's get to the bottom of it once and for all! Give it some serious thought, get some friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What is one thing you disliked about the game you voted for?

prototype. it's more cathartic. plus that stupid twist in infamous made me remember the 6th sense. that and infamous make the fatal flaw of writing in making a movie/game: the ending having no clues prior and basically making the whole movie/game based on the ending.

I vote for inFamous.
While Prototype had some stellar gameplay elements working for it, I felt that the elements in inFamous came together as a more complete game. Also, the game tried to have a compelling story with characters that might as well have been cut from cardboard. The Web of Intrigue was a valid attempt at trying to innovate story telling in games, but using it as a "collect x number of items" mechanic as well led to failure because the consuming the targets rarely revealed anything interesting and all the cuts were short, choppy and detached from the game itself.
My least favorite thing about inFamous: the lack of any real meaning to the karma system. A simple cause and effect system that didnt limit you to specific powers would have worked better imo.

Prototype, because it fulfilled all my mass destruction fantasies, and gave me new ones I wish I'd thought of.

Bonus: Alex Mercer and everyone he knows are bland, soulless, impossible to care about and could be replaced by furniture without anyone noticing for a while.

Prototype.

Alex Mercer is a monster. He knows it, accepts it, and uses it to wreck up the place. The character is completely uncompromising. No damn morale quandries about using the power for good/evil. He's the embodiment of John Carpenter's Thing. What more could you ask for?

Game could have used more Web of Intrigue and more meaningful side quests. More power upgrades for some of the combat morphs.

Seems like only the people who vote for Prototype mention that the game is FUN...

But of course, having fun is not the point of gaming anymore. Now it's about using games to argue why your console is the best.

InFamous for me. Prototype is fun for about 3 hours, but a that point you kinda care less about kicking helicopters, or the boring missions. Sure in Infamous you dont travel as fast as in Prototype, but it kinda gives the city a much larger scope, and the districts do have a different feel to each other, whereas in Prototype the whole city looks like it was pulled out of Vice Vity, and every block looks practically the same to me.

Infamous also wins on the "has characters I care about" aspect, the story kept me hooked to play just one more mission, whereas in Prototype I felt I really didnt care at all about Alex and anything he did.

Also Infamous makes you work for your powers, and each upgrade has meaning, in Prototype you start out as a God and become increasinlgy OP, so much that you never really appreciate your new powers.

I got bored of Prototype pretty quickly. Running up buildings and plowing through pedestrians was fun for maybe the fist 10 minutes but when all youre doing is holding the right trigger it gets old fast. I dunno. I enjoyed Infamous enough to play through twice. Prototype ive played for maybe 5 hours and i dont really feel compelled to keep going.

Something I didn't like about inFAMOUS is how underused the soundtrack was. It's an amazing effort on its own and makes the game better when played, but it's just not often enough that the game deems whatever you're doing worthy of getting some accompaniment.

InFAMOUS simply because it atleast tries to give you a multifaceted story and world, where Prototype seems content with spraying blood hate all over your screen. I'm frankly kinda disgusted with it to be honest..

Prototype- For 2 reasons. No bullshit cheap and pathetic karma system to get power ups (of which there are a lot more varied amount in Prototype including using transports and guns which are reasonably effective). You are just as much of a bastard with as much collateral damage as you want. And i play games ALWAYS as a nice guy.
And cos its multiplatform so everyone can play it.
Hell im all for polish but some game sacrafice fun and gameplay and art style for polished graphics...

@braulio there are no water deaths in prototype he just jumps out. AMAZING!

inFamous is my vote

It was a much more focused experience, because of its tighter gameplay and good characters and story. The one thing I disliked about it though would be not enough of a payoff for going all out on one side of the karma system, all it really did was give you different moves and give you a different epilogue for whichever side you were on.

Still agree that Prototype is awesome, but thats more of a game to play for a quick blast whereas inFamous is a game you actually want to play to the end.

Prototype's more fun, but it doesn't last as long. Then pacing's all wrong so you feel too strong to begin with then everything is just more of the same.

inFAMOUS beats it on all other counts. Plus it has one of the best game stories of this year, and has a fantastic ending song :)

inFAMOUS.

InFamous FTW. Prototype's graphics were shoddy and it looked like i was seeing the same building times 1000. InFamous's controls were much smoother than prototypes where you had to twist your fingers to attempt at a move.

InFamous for me as well, but both are fun in their own right, it's the polish and the way that InFamous is delivered that pushes it ahead. Both game play-styles are quite different, and appeal to different parts of me.

InFamous. Better story (with some actual, surprising character development!), more engaging gameplay (jumping off of high areas actually feels like an accomplishment) more of a real superhero game (instead of eXXXXtreme slaughter of civilians at random). Genuinely great comic book-style twist at the end, too.

Infamous all the way.

I am playing through Prototype on the PC on high settings on 1680x1050 & the graphics are so bland - the only things that look any good are Alex & a few select enemies, the buildings & streets are so flat they look like a GTA San Andreas. It's such a bad console port it even says "Press Start Button" when you load it up - how many PC's do you know with a "Start" button? I might think slightly better of it using a controller on a TV as a decent resolution on a decent monitor just highlights how out of date it looks.

As far as gameplay is concerned I'm already getting bored with Prototype. The running from A to B is fun, but when you're running up the sides of buildings that are almost completely featureless it quickly loses the immersion factor. The fighting is fun for a while & Alex's powers are cool but it get's tiresome quick & you don't feel like you've got any accurate control over anything you do.

I went through Infamous twice to get all of the trophies & enjoyed it to the very end.

Forget karate kicking a helicopter. You can drop a Randy Savage elbow on a tank.

Side note: Those who are complaining about the Hunters, get Hunter Dirtnap and use whipfist. And be better at playing games.
