Game Debate to the Death! Phoenix Wright VS Henry Hatsworth photo

Last week was another battle between a recent-ish DS game versus an older DS game, and this time the support was for the other side of the fence. Here are the results:

  • Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure (36 votes) -- Good Show!
  • Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (9 votes)

This week we enter the finals round of the Nintendo DS brackets. Both contenders received tremendous amounts of support leading up to the finals, so I predict a lot of people will be torn when casting their vote. In true odd debate fashion, these two games are very hard to compare to one another, so I look forward to reading a lot of well thought out comments this week.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some DS friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What four PSP games would you like to see in the next few rounds of debate?

Aghhhhh. I have to give it to Phoenix Wright. Hatsworth is in my top 10 list, maybe even top 5, but Phoenix Wright is top 3. It's not uncommon for me to be up at 5am gaming but for Phoenix Wright I stayed up until 5am on a school night (having to be at school at 8am the next day) to finish it because I was so enthralled.

The bonus question has no bearing on me since I don't own a PSP.

Crap, this is tough. Phoenix Wright has a bit of a legacy, but Hatsworth is effing awesome. They are both really different types of games. Gonna vote for Hatsworth, nostalgia be damned!

As for PSP games, Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Wipeout Pure, Patapon, and LocoRoco.

I wish I could just list Monster Hunter Freedom 2 four times. It's by a large margin the best PSP game out there.

since I had not yet played henry hatsworth, i went out and got a copy so i could vote in these debates. after quite a few hours with it, i'm a little bothered by some of its gameplay. don't get me wrong, i'm really enjoying it despite some of its frustrating (and admittedly challenging) nuances, but mostly i'm not a fan of combining tetris AND metroid style gameplay simultaneously. at first i thought it might be better to have them separate, like maybe the tetris stuff was just for the boss fights at the end of each level, but the more i weighed the pros and cons, i realized the better it is they combined both and made the game that much more hard/interesting from start to finish. i've got to admit that even though it might bug me -- occasionally even get under my skin -- that i'm glad they did it that right.

hell, it even somewhat reminds me of the NES days when a game didn't just last a night or two, had tons of replayability tucked into secret level design areas, and actually challenged you to beat the game. i like that it's not a dumbed down metroid or DK country game. it has some british balls to it.

all that being said, i can't really fault ANYTHIING phoenix wright did, but i can fault several things henry hatsworth has done. some of the more challenging aspects of the game are obviously done on purpose, but i have to doubt the reasoning things such as letting me die AFTER a boss has been killed. come on, seriously? there's also a few level areas that are just as poorly designed as the countless brilliantly designed corners of each level. so that knocks the game down a few points.

but if i made a list for all the pros and cons of each game, henry hatsworth offers farrrrr more than phoenix wright, and shows a lot more imagination by varying levels and even the gameplay design itself. so there's really only one choice i can make this week.

VOTE: Henry Hatsworth.

One of the first hand held games that made me really play my DS even I was at home (usually I only boot it up when I'm out)

I think Phoenix Wright is probably one of the most immersive games regarding the story, and I just didn't get that feel with Henry Hatsworth.

I'm pretty biased because Phoenix Wright was one of the first DS games I bought and that really got me into portable gaming, so I'll have to go with Phoenix Wright. And Fronz brings up a good point about the imaginative design, and if that were the contest it would be Henry Hatsworth hands down, as it stands I thought that at no point in Henry Hatsworth did it come close to that satisfying feeling of yelling your final objection in a case when you nailed someone.

Phoenix Wright hands down, there hasn't been a game that's hooked me like that series has. The compelling story telling and interactive investigating game play. It's what makes it the best game on the DS by far.

Hatsworth is an incredible game, but Phoenix Wright wins out via it's numbers advantage. I wouldn't lose the Phoenix Wright series for just the one Hatsworth game. Maybe once Hatsworth has a sequel out (there better be one!) it'll be a different story, but for now the legacy of Phoenix Wright has to win.

I'm going to start by saying I haven't played any Phoenix Wright game on the DS. With all the people saying it's one of the best DS games out, I may have to try it at some point. But as it stands Tetris Attack (in all its incarnations) is my favorite puzzle game of all time. It is so simple, yet so addicting.

By seamlessly combining my favorite puzzle game with a very addicting action platforming game, EA has made one of my favorite games of all time. I will admit that it is just hard once you get in to the treasure dimension...and I too fell victim to the death after boss trick. But it just works on so many other levels.

My vote is Henry Hatsworth

Wooo. this is a tought one. i recently played henty hatsworth and love the mixture between an plataform game and tetris attack, but my feelings say Phoenix Wright, simply for the reason i love it every single game of the franchise.

About PSP...mmm...i haven't played a lot of psp but my picks would be God of War, Patapon, MGS Portable Ops and Tekken :3

I'm gonna vote for Phoenix soley on the fact that while Hatsworth is a ton of fun, its immensely frustrating at times because of poor design choices, I don't like arbitrary difficulty.

That and the game goes from a difficulty climb to a difficulty cliff, it gets insanely hard after awhile and the bosses take way to long to kill.

Phoenix Wright doesn't have nearly as many flaws as Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure.

That's mainly because Phoenix Wright doesn't try to do much beyond tell a story and throw a few dialog-tree-related puzzles in your path, while Henry Hatsworth decided to take a high-level 2D platformer and experiment with grafting the best puzzle game of all time into it as an action gameplay element.

Vote: Henry Hatsworth, because it dares to try something new and different in a platform that exemplifies the video game industry's insistence on rehashing the tried-and-true over and over again.
