Last week we saw two Nintendo titans go to combat and the outcome felt just like Kimbo Slice's last fight. Landslides are always more painful when they involve two great competitors, so it was sad to tally these results and see a Zelda game rarely fall flat on its face:
- Super Mario Galaxy (90 votes) -- Winner!
- Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (26 votes)
However, in Link's defense, about one in five Mario votes came stapled with an apology to the Zelda series. This week we move on to the Wii odd game debate finals bracket with a quirky adolescent game paired up with a peculiar childish game. Since both games received even more than average amounts of support in their rounds, I'm really interested to see how the conflicted demographics will impact this discussion.
Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some Wii friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Then we move on to the PS3 brackets!
Bonus Question: What was one thing you didn't like about the game you voted for?

I loved everything about the game. I guess one thing I COULD say is that the camera was sometimes wonky. But that's really all I can think of. In my eyes this is a perfect game. One of Nintendo's finest, and the best entry in the Super Mario series so far.
While I think Mario Galaxy is a near perfect game from an execution/commodity standpoint, No More Heroes is more (pardon the pretentiousness) *important* game, considering the Wii and its placement in history as a game of this generation.
Over dramatic claims aside, No More Heroes does what you would expect a game from Nintendo first party to do. It engages the audience in a fresh experience that plays up its presence on the hardware its running on. The motion controls are used tastefully but satisfyingly. The WiiMote speaker is used in ways that just make sense in the context of modern/newer gaming and cultural ideas (The wooshing of the saber and the phone calls between missions). The graphics play up to the Wii's ability to push unique artstyle.
And the setting, story elements, and structure tap into some of the most basic elements of gameplay that anyone can relate too. Grinding, fetch quests, stupid hard one shot kill experiences, hidden items, shopfront commerce, driving, learning combos, leveling up, upgrading equipment, and a one level bullethell shump to boot! Its all in there. All of it. Not to say its a perfect game, but the thing stands as a snapshot of gaming in this generation. Even the concept of game as art and/or cliche is tossed in, for good measure.
I loves me some Mario. But No More Heroes stands as a greater benchmark of the ages than even the near flawless product of Mario Galaxy.
The open world was debatably poor, of course.
No More Heroes is vastly over rated and all the style in the world couldn't make up for how many terrible design decisions were made during it's development.
If it were an anime if would be awesome but as a game it's trash.
More than that though it was the sense I got that Nintendo - Miyamoto - knew that this game was absolutely brilliant, at times it seemed almost arrogant introducing and throwing away brilliant ideas like they were almost an afterthought. I would never dare to say this is as good as Super Mario Bros. 3 but for me it's as close to that level of perfection as a third person platformer has ever come.
Bonus question: the somewhat cliché slippery slope ice world seemed out of place in the rest of the game.
Let's see... No More Heroes is another jewel made by Suda51 who is like motherfucking Quentin Tarantino for video games.
However Super Mario galaxy pushes back Mario's fresh look on the game type he really should stick more.
... ehhh.....
I think.... I will go with Super Mario Galaxy. It was a perfect execution for inventive platform game design and giving Mario some of his delicious glory back. It's not like its the first 3D platformer he got, its simply that the whole gravitation stages was something that you couldn't see in any, if not much, titles around.
Still I think No More Heroes is awesome but kudos for the guy in the red cap.
Bonus Question Answer: Texture pop-in. That's really all that bugged me about the game.
I think it was its overkiddifying on the places such as the bunnies at the beginning or some of the dialogue in other languages, but its freaking Mario anyway, it has always been that way i guess, maybe I am getting too old haha.
While No More Heroes is a really fun game, it had some game design hiccups that hurt the flow of the game
Galaxy however was executed brilliantly from the opening scene to the ending credits. The game was fully polished from the touching story book cutscenes to the soundtrack, level design, brought back boss fights, and near-perfect game play. I agree now that Nintendo should try something new with the 3D Mario's in the future (Not collect stars) but this was one of the best games of this generation, in my opinion at least.
Galaxy is arguably the best 3D platformer ever made, but can be pretty lacking in personality. It doesn't take a lot of risks, but after the shoddy reception Sunshine received and all the risks it took, you can't blame Nintendo for playing it safe with Galaxy.
On the other hand, Suda51 had every reason to want to take risks wtih NMH, and for the most part, they paid off. No More Heroes is dripping with personality, enough to endear the game to thousands of people, and generally make up for the game's faults.
The gameplay is fun as hell, but it's not exceptional. The graphics are really fun to look at (most of the time), but they are never exceptional. The only place the game really achieves is in the personality department.
I guess if someone said I had to stop writing this and play one of the two games right now, I'd pick NMH, just because I'm tired as hell and I'm not up for anything more complicated than some mindless murder. Overall though, there are more times in my life when I'd choose Galaxy... I think.
Man, this decision is a lot harder than I thought it would be!
Vote: Super Mario Galaxy
Bonus: It's a tad too easy. I'm glad it was never cheap, but then maybe that's why its so endearing, the ease of the gameplay.
The thing I didn't like about Galaxy was that you couldn't play two players. No, that 2P controlling the pointer bullshit doesn't count. It's been a long time since they've had a real two player mode in a Mario game.
I remember how much fun it was in Super Mario World to have 2 players and each take different paths, clearing all the levels twice as fast. In SMG they should let 2P control Luigi and it alternates every time someone dies or gets a star. You could have split up and each taken on a different Galaxy at a time.
Mario games never appealed to me that much, dunno why. I got TO the last boss, but never bothered to beat him. No More Heroes on the other hand, I'm on my third playthrough (time for BITTER MODE).
My one complaint would be some really annoying boss fights (I'm looking at you Holly).
Crazy new gimmicks, same old Mario fun
It's only problem? Could have been harder. Getting all 120 stars should be terrifyingly challenging and not just grueling towards the end.
The other fun aspects of NMH are the bosses, music, art style and controls and collecting t-shirts and searching for dumpsters.Plus, the game's sense of style and humor make it pleasantly unique. If you haven't played it yet, then NMH is a fun and worthwhile game.
Super Mario Galaxy gets my vote for a couple of reasons.
Visually ,the game is one of the best looking around. Secondly, the controls are tight and the mix of old and new gameplay makes SMG one of the most entertaining, bold, innovative and refreshing platformers in years. The original, orchestrated music is among Nintendo's best and I also liked how epic the game's beginning and ending cut scenes were.
In addition, I really did like the game's difficulty curve. The linear level design of the mission structue and game pacing also lends well to being a pick up and play kind of game.
Some of the things I didn't like that much in SMG was the use of fairly annoying techno music for the power-up items and the lack of creative boss battles (though Mega Leg's was pretty cool and Bowser's boss fights was easy but very fun)
I always say SMG and NMH are the two greatest Wii games of all time, but Mario gets the edge because it's goddamn Mario. NMH is an amazing experience but has a shitload of flaws, like the useless overworld and eh graphics. Mario Galaxy is amazing with very few flaws, in fact none that I can really think of.
But I have to for the bonus question. One issue I guess is that I didn't like how they had the Honeyhive Galaxy and then down the line a reskinned version of it. And when you played as Luigi, it would have been interesting to have him and Mario switch places instead of Luigi saving Luigi...that was weird. And I guess it could have used some voice acting for the minimal dialogue. All very minor complaints for an otherwise life exploding experience.
I'll go with Galaxy, but it's tough. If I had to review both games, I'd probably give Galaxy a 10/10, so I have to go with it.
That said, I'm personally more attached to NMH. Galaxy is a game I recommend to just about everybody, but NMH is a game I can strongly recommend to some people with the utmost certainty.
I guess if they were comedy shows, Galaxy would be Seinfeld, and NMH would be Tim and Eric.
Does that make sense?
Yes it does, I don't have the patience, andy kaufmanism, or whatever you want to call it that T&E requires, but I could watch 12 hours straight of side splitting seinfeld.
Bonus Question: That it ended and did not have more levels like Sweet Sweet Galaxy (I think that's what it was called), like perhaps an endless one.
My vote is for No More Heroes.
You take that back. Tim And Eric is god awful.
Sifl and Olly, maybe.
Kids in the Hall, maybe.
T&E? Blech.
I will answer the bonus though. It was missing something, just like Miyamoto said. He couldn't identify it, and I can't really either, but something was unmistakably missing.
Why didn't I enjoy SMG? It was annoying to me. I honestly never beat it and didn't play it too much. I guess it was boring or meh .. it's hard to quite put my finger on it. All I know is that I hardly looked forward to picking it up to continue through my save. The game is beautiful and everything but in terms of play wise, I found myself preferring to play something else.
