Last week we finished up the Xbox 360 round of odd game debates and now we move on to the Wii brackets. After a ridiculously brutal matchup against Fallout 3, BioShock had to go the distance once again against the highly anticipated, and first round massacre champ, Mass Effect. Here are the results:
- BioShock (83 votes) -- Winner!
- Mass Effect (55 votes)
This week's first round Wii debate comes from the suggestion of Dtoider Grafkhun. In his exact words, "No More Heroes --- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (both are action games, yet totally different)." The setting and gameplay moods are definitely polar opposites so I've got a feeling a lot of people will be voting with their guts this week. Just make sure you give the opposing side some serious consideration before making your decision final. Then fill us in on why you made your choice, get some Wii friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.
Last week also brought out more fresh robot faces with brand new accounts -- it's good to see newcomers jumping in! If you're still lurking without an account, what are you waiting for? Pick a week when you're familiar with both games and join in on the fun!
Bonus Question: What was one thing you didn't like about the game you voted for?

Bonus: Schpeltiger controls. Shit was whack.
The thing I disliked the most from No More Heroes...? Maybe the fact the enemies were nothing but cannon fodder. I know the overworld is going to be mentioned, but personally I thought it was a brilliant irony that Suda51 implemented (the overworld is boring because it's boring to Travis).
Didn't like: The grinding between levels, but that was my fault because I always bought a bunch of stupid crap after every boss fight.
Didn't like the side mission that are insta fail if you are hit once, especially when the enemies were using guns.
But I know which one Dyson is voting for ;)
It was just... as Nalm said, the city was pretty lackluster. There wasn't really anything to do and it was pretty bland all around. I also didn't like the overall choices of weapons and how the final one I found to be less effective other than its unlimited power source.
What I didn't like...the #2 fight more than anything. Apart from her having an absurd amount of HP given her next-to-final-boss status, she has an instant kill and it took me FOUR TRIES to kill her on EASY. *gnashes teeth* I didn't have as much trouble with the other battles in the game, but this one took the cake forever.
However, No More Heroes brought something wholly fresh to the Wii table. It feels undeground without being completely amateurish. It lent an aire of auteur presence and feel with cult superstar Suda 51 putting his thing down. And, maybe more important than all that: its a 3D beat'em up that manages to use the Wii controls in the some of the most satisfying ways to date. There are few thrills greater than registering that final sword swing and watching Travis put his body into a baseball style swat, complete with gushing visual and audio effects. The wrestling moves would find their way, oddly enough, into this month's Deadly Creatures. The suplex motion is slowly becoming as familiar as the quarter circle fireball!
Also, ebay lightsabers.
Bonus: I didn't like not being able to immediately restart the one-hit-failure type missions. I appreciate the tension, but the penalty killed those missions for me.
Technically, MP3:C is the better game, but if I were trapped on a desert island with only one of them, it would be NMH. So NMH gets my vote.
And the one thing I didn't like about NMH was the way the city parts of the game looked so much worse than the "action" parts of the game.
No More Heroes gets my vote.
Bonus: Overworlding was basically lame. Dodgy controls, bland environments, lots of needless driving around... got pretty repetitive.
Even though the city needed to be fleshed out, and it wasn't near as slick looking, it was still amazing fun and original. Prime 3 was too FPS for my Metroid. It took you by the hand too often, and felt too linear. If this was Prime 1 my vote would be different.
GOD I CAN'T WAIT FOR DESPERATE STRUGGLE!!!!!!!!!!
Metroid Prime 3 took a complete turn in how Metroid Prime and Metroid games felt. You had a group of douche nozzles helping you out for goondness sake.
And No More Heroes was all flash and no substance. The gameplay was an absolute bore.
Eh, I guess I'll go with No More Heroes. I had a tad more fun than I did with Metroid prime 3 (1 will always be the best).
As far as what I didn't like about the game, hyper mode isn't as cool as it could have been. It's supposed to feel kick ass, but I kept feeling like I wasn't making effective use of it.
Liked:
- original characters
- sweet art style
- over the top presentation
- good controls
- awesome wrestling moves and
- eccentric music (virgin child was an awesome surprise)
Disliked:
- most of the jobs weren't that fun
- city was too big with little to do in it
- special power-ups rarely obtained and can be executed at times when there's no enemies
- the up and down sword position wasn't that important and didn't add much to the gameplay
Metroid Prime 3
Liked:
- impressive controls
- great graphics and detailed art direction
- pretty good combination of combat and puzzle-solving
- loved the new items like the grapple beam and lasso
Disliked:
- lack of offering more beam weapons and armor suits
- lack of creative boss battles
- voice-acting was decent but prefer not to have it
- Didn't care much about the allied bounty hunters
As much as I really liked No More Heroes, there's a lot that could be improved and I hope Grasshopper does so in the sequel. However, the game's sense of style and attitude as well as the combat mechanics made it a lot of fun to play though.
Metroid Prime 3's controls, level design and pacing felt like a refreshing change and one that made it easier to complete without having to backtrack long distances.
I'd have to go with Metroid Prime 33 for offering solid gameplay that does more to innovative and is also more polished and better looking.
No More Heroes offered two cool endings while Metroid Prime 3's was rather dull especially for the ending of a trilogy.
Bonus Question's Answer: The Fact that it froze on me - yep, No More Heroes froze on my a couple of times, first when fighting Destroy man, secondly when fighting speed-buster and lastly when fighting bad-girl. It took me a long time to forgive it for freezing on me, right when I was about to win.
Anyways, I have only played a bit of NMH, but I still prefer MP3:C. I liked the other primes, but I felt they were a bit too adventurey, and I liked how MP3 had a bit more shooting than the others.
Vote: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Bonus: using the grappling hook beam thing, a minor complaint, I just had some difficulty getting the timing down right using it.
Two things, though. Why don't those missions have a restart option? I don't want to drive all the way back to the stupid chick who can't speak proper English and has so much damn eyeshadow that she looks like a raccoon and then drive all the way back to the stadium just to miss the three baseballs yet again.
Second, the final battle. Took over 1000 hits. I clocked that in around 30 minutes. And the pattern didn't change at all. What should have been epic turned out to be a chore. Seriously, his HP should have been cut down to about 30% of that.
It's my favorite Wii game yet, as it actually makes the motion controls fun, unlike Zelda (which I loved, just no those shitty wii controls).
The worst part of No More Heroes was easily the overworld/"sandbox" city map. God it was awful, boring, and everything looked like shit. Just shows how much I loved the combat.
I hate how almost every boss had that same stomp-the-floor-and-make-shockwaves-that-you-have-to-time-your-jump-over move.
NMH really stuck with me though. That was a great game.
No More Heroes was a great game too, but it just needs more cowbell compared to MP3
Either one could use a good sequel. Too bad we aren't going to get another good Metroid game for a while
Usually I pick all the matchups but semi-often I also let reader input pick exactly how things go down. This time it was a bit of both.
Metroid Prime 3, on the other hand, is a very refined experience with wonderful graphics for the Wii's limitations. In comparison though, it just doesn't hold the same kind of "charm" that No More Heroes possesses.
Both are great games, and they definitely both hold their ground quite firmly. If there is any problem with them, it would be No More Heroes tacked on open world hub and repetitive combat, and Metroid Prime 3's "been there, done that" feel with poorly developed characters (more specifically the other hunters).
I find most games now a days seem to lack a sense of "character connection". Just because you stick a good guy in front of me and say "he's a great guy", then have him blasted into oblivion does not make the player feel sorry for him. Sure, he could of been great at writing poetry or kicking kittens, but I sure as hell wouldn't know that with the 5 minutes of total character development they had.
This problem could also be from the lack of "human connectivity" with the character that seems to be looked over. Hard to feel connected with a card board cutout.
Bonus: No hit missions were controller throwing level of frustrating. No boss rush mode.
BQ: the fact that some of the submissions immediately dissappeared if you failed them :-( some were quite fun but way too short :-)
I played MP3, first one out of the series. Not my cup of tea.
I loved it; can't wait for the sequel!
I didn't like the overworld travel in NMH, I think they should've done more with it or left it out. Also, longer would be nice, but I'm not going to complain it was too short.
The thing I really started to dislike was the whole playing the same assassination mission over and over again to earn enough money to fight the next boss, other than that No More Heroes is my # 1 favorite Wii game.
