Game Debate to the Death!Monster Hunter Freedom 2 VS Patapon photo
Last week's debate was the first round of the PSP odd debate brackets and it was a hell of a fight. For the first many votes, things were completely tied up. Then, as expected, LocoRoco took the early lead and didn't look back. Towards the end, Crisis Core gained some momentum and tried to catch up, but . . . wait a minute . . . wow. Congratulations Crisis Core on an epic comeback! Here are the results:
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (27 votes) -- "Winner!"
  • LocoRoco (25 votes)

Okay, you guys and gamer girls asked for it. Two weeks ago I had everyone cast their recommendations for PSP games, and here's two games many of you seemed adamant about. As usual with odd debates, comparing these two won't be easy, but that's why we're doing it. Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PSP friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What was one thing you didn't like about the game you voted for?

Pata-pata-pon-pon.

It's totally different from other games, playing a game where youre attacking other creatures to a fun beat is always great.

Personally, I'm thinking this should be MHF2 instead of the iffy original, but what the hey. MHF is hardcore, "You keep what you kill" action. It requires patience, perseverance and actual ability to master and defeat all its myriad beasties.

Patapon is kid's stuff. I'll take Monster Hunter Freedom for the kill.

I vote for both

MHF2 needing a team to beat a monster when no one has it >_<

P2 having to focus on only the game if someone calls or something I'm not coming till I'm done

Fronz! I am going to keep demanding that you write a feature non Vs. related, while simultaneously supporting it! You have a bright mind, and I know you're capable of writing an awesome "etymology of the vs. culture" feature at some point.

Patapon. It was too darned cute to pass up.

Bonus:
I didn't like the mechanics of the game; it was stylized, but could have been so much more.

I'm voting Monster Hunter only because I want to say a big f-u to Sony for going with download only in the US for the Patapon sequel. If you can't tell, I'm still very bitter about that.

Bonus: I felt the game didn't really tell you everything you needed to know (like obtaining ka-ching and the infamous desert level).

I dunno, there are so many MH-clones on the market today, like Phantasy Star Portable or Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce or hell, every 3D game for the system! *rolleyes*

Null vote because I barely did much in Pata, and I didn't ever play Monster Hunter.

My vote is for Monster Hunter.

The one thing I didn't like about the game is steep learning curve ( you really need guides for this game ), and that is why a lot of people never played it for long enough and then make comments on it.

MONSTER HUNTER

Because its the ONLY game out there that lets you hunt huge, awesome looking dragons and beasts with 3 mates, and then make sweet armour and weapons from their hides and teeth and claws and stuff.

What dont I like? Well, a lot of things; the series is pretty flawed. I guess the biggest problem is exactly that; the whole fricken series has the same issues, because Capcom havent changed much since the first entry on the ps2. Theyve added stuff, sure, but theres far too many frustrating problems with the games that Capcom seems to love to ignore. As long as they still sell... darn japanese.

Other than "using their organs to make weapons", you just described the gameplay of any Phantasy Star.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 - Some of the most fun I've ever had grinding. Great design and style with tons of items, weapons and monsters; as well as recipes, item making, farming and fishing. Being able to adventure with friends and take down giant beasts with guns, swords, bows, bombs and traps, all of which you can make yourself, make it one of the best games the PSP has to offer.

It suffers from some pretty intrusive loading screens, and when the level only takes 5 seconds to load, it makes you wonder why they didn't opt for a smoother loading transition that loads smaller segments of the level instead of entire areas at once, effectively removing the loading screens. The mission setup screen is horrible, movement speed is a little slow and the missions can become tedious.

Patapon - Fun for a while, but with less than a handful of commands it ultimately suffered from a lack of depth and become monotonous and boring. Perfect for short bursts of gameplay between other games, but definitely not something I'd want to sit down with for a few hours and get in to.

A nice idea with sub-par implementation and a repetitive nature of gameplay, often bordering on annoying.

My vote: MONSTER HUNTER FREEDOM 2

well in that case, why'd you pick patapon?

I have to vote for patapon myself due to ignorance on the other choice. Also I didn't like the grinding cause the monsters got stronger while you're basically stuck where you are.

I defy anyone who hasn't put 200+ hours in, to bad mouth Monster Hunter. The PSP series are the games that changed my gaming habits forever. You have to really live MH to get good at this shit. It's fucking amazing.

I've put in around 500+ hours in MHF and MHF2 and cannot wait for MHFU, I still play MHF2 every day! In fact, I'm giving up smoking right now and using MHF2 as a distraction, I play instead of smoking.

Never has grinding been so un-boring, it's the perfect yet wierd combination of RPG and fighting game, it spills into your real life and has you watching videos on how others do it and reading guides etc.

i have lost so much of my life to MH - I've killed 2 relationships by wanting to play MH more than hang out with my mrs, and i don't care. that save file with ALL of those weapons and armours and stuff is worth losing those bitches for (was not too into them hoes anyway, my fiancee actually plays with me now!)

i've made my 2 PSP owning buddies buy MHF2 and we get together a couple of times a month and hunt the shit out of those monsters till the early hours of the morning.

I gave Patapon 2 a damn good playing, but after a couple of weeks of repetitive pat-pata-pata-pon-ing I got pretty bored.

I will never bore of MH.

i may even have to borrow back my Wii when MH3 comes out. Now that's saying somethng, the Wii sucks balls.

MHF for the mother fucking win.

Bonus - I don't like how they're bringing MH3 to the Wii instead of the PS3. the PS3 would rock the MH world hard! i want, no, i NEED a beautiful High Def Monster Hunter game.

Back to farming G-class Tigrex for some sweet archer armour.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Patapon gets really repetitive after the first hour, but i couldn't stop play Monster Hunter. It's almost entirely skill-based, so even if you have the best armor you can still get killed pretty fast if you dont know what you're doing. Plus, the multiplayer on it really brings a team together. The one thing i didn't like about Monster Hunter was that it starts off slow, but once you get to the Khezu, it really ramps up.

@Magnalon - making stuff out of their organs is as important as the killing, if not more-so (since repeating quests to get that one scale or whatever is what makes the game last 400+ hours). But sounds like Phantasy Star could be worth a try, i always had a slight interest in that series.

Patapon for sure. MHF2 was way to repetitive and the camera was too unmanageable.

Bad thing about Patapon would have to be having to repeat certain parts over and over to farm

wait i'm changing my most hated thing about patapon 2. Disappearing f-cking items. Theres nothing worse than having something good drop buy being unable to reach it in time or WORSE prevented from reaching it due to how long some conversations take. Theres no need for disappearing drops in any game when are developers gonna stop using that shitty mechanic.
