Game Debate to the Death! Mass Effect VS BioShock photo

Last week's debate was insane. I've been doing these debates almost every week for three years now, and it might be the closest to the perfect game debate we'll ever witness. The ways in which the two contenders were varied was so useful for comparing and contrasting them, and nearly every single comment did the topic justice. I've never in all these years seen so many people say "I signed up just for this debate" and you have no idea how happy that makes me feel. I <3 Dtoiders.

I've never had so much fun and excitement going through hundreds of comments to tally a winner. The outcome was incredibly close and each side should feel honored to get so much praise. The Xbox 360 2008 game of the year versus its 2009 console throne replacement was truly a battle of titans. Here are the results:

  • Fallout 3 (83 votes)
  • BioShock (87 votes) -- Winner!

Considering about half of the votes last week were noticeably nail-biter "Damn you, Fronz! I can't decide! Fine, I'll go with _____ and here's why..." votes, that says a lot about how great both games were in their own ways. Anyone who owns a 360 should definitely go out of there way to play both of these games, as well as Mass Effect. This week could easily turn into yet another photo finish debate that comes out close.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some Xbox 360 friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Are you still a reader without an account? What are you waiting for?!

Bonus Question: Start casting suggestions for games you'd like to see in the Wii odd debate tournament brackets!

Gotta take BioShock.

Definitely Bioshock. I thought it was way more interactive, and I felt infinitely more connected to the story and the world of Rapture. Mass Effect was a turn based RPG masquerading as an FPS, complete with time freezing to select your entire party's next attack. Things like that make it really hard to suspend your disbelief and get into a game, IMO.

Bioshock had a much more inviting control layout, and simple tasks like walking and looking around felt way more natural. Even the most minute detail looked like it got more attention in Bioshock than in Mass Effect.

BONUS: Don't underestimate the power of Raving Rabbids! Even though I'm voting for Brawl to rule them all.

Well I've already said a lot about both, and that all still stands, but in this scenario with these two particular candidates, a different dilemma comes to mind.

BioShock kicked ass at storytelling and immersion, and pushed the boundaries in these areas, so it seems like an obvious winner. Besides the fact that simply Mass Effect's dialogue setup alone is enough to make it a worthy contender, what comes to mind is that Mass Effect pushed the boundaries of gaming as a whole. By touching on some advanced and more mature scenarios it is still a golden example of how to elevate games from just fun pasttime hobbies to serious mediums of storytelling that deserve just as much attention and credit as movies do. BioShock was amazing, but it really doesn't fit those shoes.

In essence, BioShock showed the industry that we've been slacking with storytelling, but Mass Effect showed us all we've been slacking in even more and important ways.

And fuck, I am such a sucker for Grim Fandango dialogue tree interface design. This is really hard to choose, but...

VOTE: BioShock.

It is very possible that I would vote differently if I ran this debate again in a year from now. The reason for my pick right now though, is that the thing that attracted me so strongly to gaming is its ability to bring imaginations to life. To make up an entire world that is not real, and make it feel so damn real. And then the whole conundrum that goes along with it that South Park has explored in the last year -- it may not be real, but when millions of people are affected by something that is make believe, well then it's not exactly "not real" either. And BioShock is one of the most immersive games in several years. My god does Rapture both kick ass AND feel real, and its characters and imagery feel so vivid. So it gets my vote.

BQ: Don't forget to make suggestions!

@ Link39 -- you make some great points about how pause menu setups for party combat can destroy the immersion.

Bioshock, but my saying is a little biased, as I've never completed Mass Effect, my brother likes it(cant seem to like the same things much) and I like my gameplay more faster than "Talk to this person to move to an elevator to talk to another person to move to another elevator to get in to a 60- second battle; and repeat."

Mass Effect.

Bioshock was good, but too short. I beat it in less than a day.
That plot twist really pissed me off.
Mass Effect kept me entertained for atleast a week and a half.
That's my vote.

Bioshock for me. The opening hour of that game was possibly the most awestruck I've been whilst playing video games since I was a child My frind came round to watch me play it the day I got it and we were both just sat laughing at how good it was. 2K Didn't quite carry it through to the end unfortunately but it's a truly beautiful game.

Mass Effect was good (pc version played) but just seemed a little flat and sterile for me.

So yeah, Bioshock.

OMG this is going to be so fucking hard. I played and beat both of these games soon after I got them. But I am going to give it to...

BIOSHOCK!

It was just better, hands down. Mass effect did nothing new. At all. TO give it to you straight, I would just rather throw bioshock into my 360 rather than Mass Effect. Also I have played through biodshock twice, and mass effect only once.

Bonus question:
metroid prime 3 vs. fire emblem radiant dawn.
This should be interesting.

Mass Effect, like Fallout 3, was fantastic. And, like last weeks debate, I'm going with Bioshock simply because, while it was shorter, it packed more fun per minute than Mass Effect did. I still want to give a respectful nod to Mass Effect, though, because I had more fun playing Mass Effect, but that's because it was longer which essentially gave me more opportunity for fun.

Bonus Question:
I could care less. I seriously haven't played a single Wii game that I enjoyed. I'm not a hater, it's just not the type of experience I'm looking for.

Bioshock, haven't played ME yet, but I'm still voting for Bioshock, because I can.

Vote: Bioshock

bonus: do you want us to put 2 games against each other? or just name one game and you pick the game it goes up against? anyways,

No More Heroes --- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (both are action games, yet totally different)

Super Smash Bros Brawl --- Battalion Wars 2 (again, not similar at all)

Trauma Center: Second Opinion --- Okami (both are ports with bascially just added waggling, yet better than the originals)

Trauma Center: New Blood --- Tatsunoko versus Capcom (uhh...)

Augh, this just points out why having a 360 when I have a PC is so lame. All these games getting nominated for 360 matchups I can and have played better versions on my PC. Is there even going to be PC matchups? Probably not.

So uh, Bioshark I guess. Because taking photos is fun.

Also, need to start doing some DS games.

Not even a tough choice: BioShock by a landslide.

Mass Effect sucked. The only reason it won the last debate is because Assassin's Creed is just about the only game that was a bigger disappointment.

This is like choosing which one of my children I love the most.

Even with my Big Daddy on top of my PC tower, I have to give it to Mass Effect; I bought it twice, for the 360 and then with promises of prettiness and bug fixes, PC.

It is so close for me but my vote is for Mass Effect purely because I am looking forward more to ME2 than BS2(Damn it, stop the milking BS, it does not need a prequel!)

Wedge brings up a good point with PC matchups. They might be ahrd, but you could do something like the first two games from the earlier years, the second bracket from the four years or so after that, and so on.

Mass Effect.

The open universe did it for me. The multiple dialogue trees, the sense of accomplishment when you're mentioned in the loading elevators, all that made for a solid experience for me. While bioshock is definitely a great game in its own right, Mass Effect just takes the cake for me.

Bioshock. Say what you will about the gameplay or the length, but it gave us another brief glimpse at the narrative sophistication that videogames are capable of attaining. In my mind, that alone is enough to merit the mountains of praise it has received these past few years.

Long story short: Bioshock

Long story long:

I found both of these games to have well-written characters and both (main) storylines were interesting enough to draw me forward. But Mass Effect had far too much filler around it's meaty narrative bits. I can appreciate that it's a fully fleshed out universe, but I never cared for all of that extra stuff. The main plot drove me forward, but it was a chore to get to sometimes. Bioshock on the other hand was so tight and well paced that I never felt like I was wading through useless filler or unnecessary backstory.

So win for the story (and atmosphere for that matter) to Bioshock.

As for the actual games themselves, Bioshock was a little too easy at times, but I enjoyed the combat and the variety of ways you could deal with foes throughout the game (even though turrets weren't as useful as I would have liked). Mass Effect on the other hand feels clunky to me, and the inventory system was a big hassle to deal with. It breaks up the actiony bits too often, which is what I feel the running around/talking to people/traveling places/buying things bits should do. Having to stop and dive through menus during and around combat was a real bummer for me.

Gameplay win goes to Bioshock too!

This is my first game debate, I can't believe I never got in on this before :)

Interesting choice. I guess, in the end, i played Mass Effect right through because i enjoyed how it played, despite its many faults. I did not play Bioshock much at all because i hated how it played, despite its many amazing qualities.

So Mass Effect. But Bioshocks gonna win. Id put Fallout 3 ahead of ME, too.

Out of the two, Bioshock. The story, the gameplay, the creative manner in which you disposed of enemies, all of it. Way better. I just recently finished it a 3rd time on the PS3 and it's still an amazing game.

Mass Effect wins my nomnomnomination, for several reasons. Bioshock was fanfuckingtastic, and exactly what the industry needed at the time to show fans and naysayers alike just how amazing and immersive a game could be. Mass Effect, however, drew me in and didn't let me go for weeks, I shit you not. I played and beat Mass Effect eight times in a row, only using the same character twice, so I effectively (see what I did there?) used six different characters for six different gameplay experiences. I also tried every difficulty and did every sidequest, finding every precious mineral and alien crash site. Bioshock I greatly enjoyed, but I played through and beat it once, didn't touch it for months, then played and beat it again. Mass Effect is a game I will still play, and have been doing so off and on since I got it. I waited with bated breathe for the Bring Down the Sky DLC, and now I cannot wait for Mass Effect 2. Bioshock 2 excites me also, but I have to give my heart-felt vote to Mass Effect, knowing it will probably lose anyways. Both are excellent games, and both deserve top honours in the world of video games, and I am oh so glad to see both made it this far.

As with most everyone, I found the atmosphere in Bioshock to be completely engrossing. Yes, it was very straight forward, but it played out so beautifully, although I think I speak for the majority when I say that the endings were a bit of a let down.

Mass Effect, although I love me some sci-fi, didn't pull me in as much as I needed it to. I think perhaps I wanted another KOTOR. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

Verdict: BIOSHOCK

Also, I'm going to be a bitter bitch, I call a rematch for Fallout 3!
