Game Debate to the Death! Luigi's Mansion VS Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker photo

Last week we finished our PS2 odd debate brackets with a monstrous battle between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Shadow of the Colossus. Despite a few recent landslide wins, I have to say that I've never seen so many Dtoiders say "This was a really hard choice" in the comments as I have in the last month.

Last week in particular I heard a lot of different people saying the same thing, and I just want to let everyone know your words aren't going unnoticed. So, with a huge demand for a Colossus versus MGS 3 debate, I promise that I'll visit that topic as soon as this odd debate theme is finished for each console. As for last week, here are the results:

  • Shadow of the Colossus (86 votes) -- Winner!
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (39 votes)
  • Favorite Colossi:
  • 1st: Phalanx (pictured below)
  • 2nd: Avion, the Bird
  • 3rd: Gaius, the Knight

This week we move on to two new games and a new console. Both games have different gameplay methods of focus, but both have something in similar. Both were surrounded by plenty of initial criticism for not delivering the desired next step of their series (cough, Mario 128 tech demo, sob, sob, sob, cough, Ganondorf fight tech demo, expletive, expletive, expletive, cough).

So how did the two games end up doing? Which combination of gameplay, setting and story did you enjoy more? Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some Gamecube childhood friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: Would you like to see another Luigi game any time soon? What about a "Celda" game for the Wii?

Windwalker because at least it was a full game...well, even though a LOT of that was padded out by repetitious boring sailing. I used to sail a lot in my youth when I lived on the Gulf Coast and it is a wonderful feeling to be out on the open water with the wind sweeping across you in the warm afternoon sun. Nintendo took that experience and beat all the joy out of it.

this shouldn't even be a debate. Zelda wins. Also, new Luigi game - don't care, Celda - yes please.

My wife has played 2 games to completion. The original Zelda, and Wind Waker.

I don't know if this counts as two votes, but we definitely vote for Wind Waker. It's awesome. I even loved the really slow travel system which allowed me some time to pretend I was working. Since it got my wife into games a bit, and because I absolutely loved the style, it's probably up among my top 10 games of all time.

Definitely WW.

Other than slow sailing on treasure hunts, I think Windwaker is my favorite all-time Zelda (but that's probably just because the style suits my aesthetics).
And Luigi looked neat (first thing I saw on that generation of consoles and i was blown away), but I borrowed it from a friend and beat it in just a few hours, and even in that short span it was repetitive.
So definitely Windwaker of Luigi's mansion.

And for the bonus--I don't want ANOTHER anything, but if they could make a new Celda, or a much deeper Luigi game, I'd be down for either.

I played both games and enjoyed both of them.
That said I have to give it to Wind Waker, I loved the new art style and really everything about it ('cept for the triforce bs like everyone else)

Bonus: Yes, I think another Luigi game could be a lot of fun and pretty unique. And yes to a new Celda, though I'm glad to see Nintendo is keeping the art style for the handhelds at least.

As for the Xbox I'd have to say Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow for sure, it's one of my top games ever and my friends and I went back to it even after two sequels (one next gen) and other "big" multiplayer games.

My vote: Wind Waker. Possibly my favorite Zelda of all time.

Bonus Question: I don't really care about a new luigi game, unless it was as funny as the paper mario games.

As far as Zelda goes, I don't want it to be like WW or TP style (even though i truly enjoyed both). I want it to be completely messed up, and journey into a heavily steam punk/futuristic realm, similar to FFVI/VII did for the FF franchise. There's no denying it worked. And in all honesty, Zelda needs a real breath of fresh air.

Wind Waker obviously. And I would love for another game like Wind Waker, since it's one of the best Zelda games. Actually if it weren't for the grind of collecting treasure maps and the endless ship travels, it would be my favorite.

Also Luigi's Mansion is incredible and so much fun.

Argh I hate to make this hard decission, but Wind Waker would be my pick mostly for fullfilling my Zelda demands.

Though Luigi's Mansion is a LOT of fun. The exploration adn the silent atmosphere made it feeel amost like a hybrid with Metroid too. Luigi's Mansion doesnt fail to entertainment on its features and Ghostbuster style.

And if I want another Luigi game? Yes. And I want it to be unique as this title.

I've got to give it to Luigi's Mansion. I just find it to be a simple, fun little game. I also prefer the visuals over Celda.

Speaking of which, I've never liked the Zelda games: the incessant chopping of grass and having to talk to annoying NPCs make the games too tedious for me.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

How could it be any different. In fact, if you put Wind Waker against anything, it's going to win from me. Though maybe not against Lylat Wars. Well, maybe just. Or maybe not. But, yeah, no, yeah, no. Oh I can't decide. Maybe that should be next week's.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker vs. Lylat Wars.

I loved Luigi's Mansion, but we're going with Wind Waker on this one. No contest.

As for the bonus question, seeing as how Nintendo's remaking Metroid Primes 1 and 2 for the Wii, I'll get we see the Wind Waker on it eventually.

Wind Waker, no doubt. Seriously, the only Gamecube game that can compare to Wind Waker is Metroid Prime. (Of curse, IMHO)

Bonus question: Yes and yes. A new Celda would make my life perfect and a new Luigi game would be cool too.

Tough choice, I think they're both underrated (or unfairly treated). Will probably go for Wind Waker though. After getting over the initial graphical shock it was an amazing, charming game.

Enjoyed Luigi's Mansion a hella lot too. Would definitely be up for another Luigi-centric game at some point. Even if just to mix up up that sometimes stale Mario Mario Mario pattern

Also wat are the other two games you picked? I don't know how Luigi's Mansion got in there when there is stuff like Metroid Prime, Viewtiful Joe (was GC exclusive for a good while), MONKEY BALL, Killer 7, Rogue Squardon, Paper Mario, and realistically RE 4.

As for future X-Box games, DEATH ROW. But nobody played that awesome game, so Smilebit is always a good bet with the awesome Panzer Dragoon and Jet Set Radio. I'm also partial to Otogi, then there's Crimson Skies, Ninja Gaiden, and mmm, Unreal Championship 2? Also I'd consider The Warriors lead platform for that, since it could run splitscreen co-op reasonably well (which was awesome in that game), and is the only X-Box game I know of that actually supported 720p.

Zelda Wind Waker of course. Luigi'S Mansion was only about 4-5 hours long and I was so dissappointed that I was able to finish it the day I bought it.
Also the graphics of Wind Waker looked so great with the Cel shaded look.

So for your Bonus question. A Luigi game: Yes if it is a lot better than Luigi's Mansion. I actually like that character.
A cell shaded Zelda on the Wii: Hell yeah! With the shitty graphics of the Wii that is probably the only way we will ever get a Zelda game on the Wii that looks at least decent.

Wind Waker is my choice, as it is one of my top 5 games of all time. The game is beautiful, that is all I have to say.

Also, does anyone remember the dancing guy in Windfall Island who teaches you the song to change night to day? He was pretty much the gayest character ever. I love that guy.

Wind Waker.

But let me say, I've enjoyed the Luigi character, up to the point where they started relegating him to pure buffoonery, starting with Luigi's Mansion. Awesome, a game where Luigi has to save Mario. That's brilliant! But then you make him piss his pants with fear for the entire game? That's BS. And then to prance him around as the victim in Galaxy? The Luigi character deserves more than that. He was the original Player 2!

Super Luigi Sunshine woulda been brilliant.

These are my two favorite GC games so I'll go with Luigi to soften the loss.

Also, as much as I hate it, the Wii was built for a Luigi's Mansion 2.

Wind Waker, no contest.

I actually really liked Luigi's Mansion. The controls were tight, the graphics were great, it was innovative and fun, with a bit of good humor thrown into the mix. But I can beat it in about four or five hours. The title as it stands right now is just too shallow and short.

That being said, to answer the bonus question, I would love to see it given a sequel or a fresh start on the Wii. There was a lot of good stuff there in the original Luigi's Mansion, but one night just wasn't long enough to display it all effectively. :(

I'd also be behind another cel-shaded Zelda game. The art style in WW was very quirky and fun, and sometimes I think it reflected the Zelda 'verse better than the pseudo-realism of Twilight Princess.

I feel like a traitor, because I really, really love Luigi, and while Luigi's Mansion wasn't bad, Wind Waker was amazing.
I would love to see a Celda game for the Wii, and would buy it instantly, especially because I loved Phantom Hourglass so much. Everything needs more Linebeck!
And I love Fronz's idea of a Paper Luigi. That sort of mechanic would suit the character very well, and I have hope, especially since they gave him so much attention in Super Paper Mario. I would sell my right arm to see more Mr. L!
