Game Debate to the Death! LocoRoco VS Crisis Core: FFVII photo

The last debate was the DS odd debate finals bracket between two games that had no problem making their way to the third round riding the hands of fan support. Despite a strong start by both sides, here are the results:

  • Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure (20 votes) -- "Good Show!"
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (48 votes) -- "Objection!" Winner!

This week we enter the PSP round of odd debates and start off with two drastically different games. One has great graphics for its handheld, while the other strives for cartoon visuals. LocoRoco's controls are completely unique compared to almost any game, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is no exception. The moods, settings, stories and gameplay goals are all going to be hard to analyze against each other, but that's exactly the goal of this week's debate. Figure out what exactly it is you loved and hated about each game, and decide why one game does or doesn't deserve a win over the other.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PSP friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What was one thing you didn't like about the game you voted for?

I'm pretty sure that I'd like LocoRoco a lot more, but since I'm not a PSP guy and haven't played either of these, I'm not voting this week.

Thanks to all who cast PSP suggestions last week -- I used the top 4 most suggested titles. I just made sure not to have rounds one and two be similar titles compared against each other to keep these as odd debates :)

After the PSP rounds we'll move on to PC odd debates and then finally be back to anything goes!

Loco Roco. Easy.

Crisis Core was a big pile of missions and "meh" gameplay. for a game that was in development for so long, I expected better sidequests. The only real redeeming factor for me was Zack and I just think Zack is a cool character. more than Sephy and Cloud.

I really liked Loco Roco for its simple charm and odd music, but it was over pretty quickly. The controls were ok, but it felt a bit wishy-washy sometimes if I was trying to go in a certain direction.

Crisis Core wasn't perfect despite it having a pretty good setup from the get-go and slightly tarnishing it with the Loveless crap along with shoehorning Dirge of Cerberus elements really rankled me. When it focused purely on Zack, I really enjoyed the story and the ending was much more than I was expecting beyond the obvious.

Short version: Crisis Core.

I wish I could really give a fair vote, as I only really played Crisis Core. But I will agree, it was a lot of missions and you could be God-powerful if you knew what you were doing in Materia fusion. And being able to defeat the hard secret boss without getting hit...yeah, I dunno about that.

At least LocoRoco looks fun and is insanely cute-looking.

Null vote. :(

I haven't played either. I'd probably like Loco Roco more, although Crisis Core is one of the few FF games who's gameplay looks fun to me. Of course, this is not a vote for either.

VOTE: LocoRoco

I got a lot more hours out of Crisis Core...I really liked the missions, as repetitive as they were, because they were a great way to kill some time. The story was really good and very well done, and wasn't too ridiculous with the typical Final Fantasy insanity. As someone who enjoyed but does not cum over FFVII, I really enjoyed Crisis Core and had a fantastic time with it.

But LocoRoco is just awesome. Classic platforming, tons of shit to collect, loads of replay value, awesome music, and outstanding graphics. It's just the better game overall and a lot more fun. Plus, my girlfriend is super into it, so we will often bounce back and forth between levels trying to outdo each other.

BONUS: I don't like how frustrating LocoRoco gets towards the end. Spikes and death and lots of cheap shit in the last couple of levels.

Locoroco. By a landslide.

Crisis Core looked amazing, but was undone by its brain-dead button-mash gameplay and unnecessary slot-machine mechanic.

There was something about Crisis Core that made the game very boring for me when I was half way done with it. Also, the story seemed like it was ripped straight out of a fanfic.

I vote for LocoRoco.

One thing I didn't like about it though, it wasn't a remake of FF7.

Everything else was great.

Crisis Core.

I didn't dig LocoRoco as a portable puzzle game. For PSP, I'd rather stick with games like Crisis Core that show off some graphics and have good gameplay and work as a "home" videogame experience than play puzzle games, which I reserve the DS for, which is more of a "10 seconds to play don't care what just go go go" type of system.
Besides, no puzzle game yet can beat Meteos.
The ending to Crisis Core was incredibly well done. Everyone knows what's coming, but I didn't expect it to actually... work so goddamn well.

As much as I really dislike all other iterations of the Final Fantasy series (yes, even 7). Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core is a great game. I enjoy the combat and I love how they went away from turn bases. God I hate turn based combat. But yeah, FF7:CC gets my vote this week. Sorry, those cute little Rocco's!

Crisis Core was great, production value wise, but it was nothing more than a button masher. You could seriously do nothing but button mash the ENTIRE GAME and win.

I loved both games, and actually didn't finish LocoRoco (borrowed permanently by a friend that moved away), but I have to give it to LocoRoco based solely on the uniqueness of the gameplay mechanic and the catchy if not obnoxious soundtrack.

Crisis Core did what all the other FFVII spinoffs failed at though and actually added positively to the cannon of the game. I mean, it's all pretty much rehashed from stuff already covered in VII-proper, but very smartly fleshed out. The battle system was also a enjoyable and not necessarily a buttonmasher if you didn't want it to be, and the mission setup was perfect for a handheld. Hard choice.

I have to say LocoRoco. Crisis Core was alright in terms of looks and production value, but like with many things with the Square Enix name on it recently, the amount of angst was too much for me to handle. Ugh. I hate that stuff.

As for the bonus question, what I didn't like about it...the longetivity of it? I don't remember it being that long.

Crisis Core. Good remixes and rock style music, answers a couple more questions from the FF7 world, and interesting gameplay.

Bonus: I gotta go with two things, the absolutely confusing as shit Materia fusion system and the massive amounts of unecessary "side missions" you get to do to get the strongest equipment.

My Vote: Loco Roco.

@Mystic Violet: "Also, the story seemed like it was ripped straight out of a fanfic."
I completely agree and not a very good one either.

FFCC would have been my vote had the escape from Nibleheim mansion not panned out the way it did.
The game play itself was fine, it was just a bad case of lousy story telling. This happened far too often in that game for my liking, but this was the most offensive to me!

Troops coming from all angles trying to prevent your escape from Nibleheim. A constant epic stream of battles ensue with them. A slow painful process. Must... protect.. cloud and escape this place! We're free, the exit out of town is right there. Man I'm tired. Let's go rest back at the mansion. You know, where we came from.

And as a side note: I don't give a rats ass about Genesis. Why add and make a new character integral to a plot that shouldn't have really needed him in the first place? (Yes, I know he was from DoC but I didn't care much for that game either).
Genesis was a cheap Spinosaurus to Sephiroth's Tyrannosaurus Rex. The whole plot was basically Jurassic park 3 but with better haircuts.

I'm not a big PSP guy, but I know that Crisis Core is the only game on that console to have garnered my full attention to finish it from start to end, so it gets my vote. Most PSP games i'll play for a bit, lose interest, and not come back to for ages, but CC had me glued to it for a solid week!

I'm not a fan of LocoRoco. I felt that after you'd seen one of its levels, youd seen them all, and the game felt like a chore for me to finish, rather than something I enjoyed. It was a shame, I was looking forward to the concept too..

Bonus question: I hate the way Crisis Core doesn't save the missions you'd done on a New Game+, and its the one reason I haven't replayed it yet. I swore i'd do all the missions, but after doing about 33% I managed to finish the game, and lost them all.

The missions were fun, if repetitive, but I wouldn't ever slog my way through the bulk of them with no narrative in between. And I certainly don't want to finish the ones i've already cleared again..

Dammit. It gets harder every time. I like both games a lot. I didn't expect to like FF: Crisis Core but I love it. On the other hand I can't imagine anyone to dislike LocoRoco. Both games got an excellent soundtrack too.

I'm gonna flip a coin. Heads is LocoRoco...

*flips coin*

OK, LocoRoco it is.

Bonusquestion:
Those Loco eating plants are fucked up. I hate it when you've got 100% on a level and right before you finish it you get eaten or hit a spike or something. Really frustrating.

Oh snap, we're talking LocoRoco 1 here right? Forget everything I said. I was thinking about LocoRoco 2.

Vote goes to: Crisis Core

wahhh, CRISIS CORE, easily. It's one of the prettiest games on the handheld, and it added enough characterization to the utterly bland FFVII cast that I actually -liked- them. Not to mention the *spoilers* One Winged Angel scene arly on *End spoilers* was one of the best moments in a game in recent memory. And, of course, missions or no it was -fun-. Hell, the missions made it even easier to enjoy as a portable--which was kind of the point.

I really didn't like Loco Roco at all, honestly. I could never get the hang of jumping well enough (I know, I know), but even then while I like the style, it's still just 'meh.' Nothing against casual games, but against a great RPG it's no contest.

Never played LocoRoco, so if my exclusivism towards CRISIS CORE doesn't qualify me, then vhatnevah. However, I'm charmed with CC-FFVII-, and how its ending was executioned what neat (I'd read someone claiming the ending was great, so I went in thinking final-FMV-ish, but I mean the final leg of gameplay). Also, seeing Sephiroth before he became teh villin, back when he was what others admired and strived for (in FFVII's world, not ours), is one of many enamouring traits.

However, what I haven't liked is the carpal strain it puts on my right hand, especially since I'm using a PSP-1001. Very much a press-X game (haven't played Hard Mode cold-start yet, and don't plan to, as I've still been getting my ass handed to me in the final battles (I was doing so well that last time, then I got combo'd without any PDs left to use; however, I now have Genji Armor, so after I cobble up an HP+999% Curaga, I can go in with so much gun-blazin').
