Game Debate to the Death! Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker VS Resident Evil 4 photo

Last week wasn't just one of the best debates in a while, it was one of the best debates we've ever had here on Dtoid. I remember a few other discussions that ended with a one vote difference, but it hasn't happened in months. At first the score was dead even, then one side took a monstrous lead that lasted for fifty votes. Just when I had thought this was over, the other game rallied and not only tied it up, but it too took a giant lead. I was astonished as I saw the crown switch hands several times for a climactic finish. Both games and both sides of the debate should be proud for the charismatic support they received, but in the end, here were the results:

  • Resident Evil 4 (70 votes) -- Winner!
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee (69 votes)

I really thought Melee would win the gold in the Gamecube debates, but instead we have a very interesting finals match between two story intensive games. Both games helped revive their series, but the similarities end there. It's hard to compare two games with such drastically different art styles, story content and gameplay mechanics, but that's exactly what you have to do this week.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some Gamecube childhood friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Then we'll move on to the Xbox brackets of odd debates.

P.S. One of this week's Monday Mind Teasers are still unsolved!

Wind Waker.

Also, RE4 shouldn't be in ANY sort of match to decide top GAMECUBE games. It only got popular when features were added and it was shipped to the biggest console at the time, PS2. The GC version isn't anything special compared to the PS2 version.

wow.

alright. I love both these games, but, just because Wind Waker throws a sneaking mission right in the beginning of the game that kept all of my friends from playing it ever again, leaving myself as the only one to share adventures with......

...I'm going with Resident Evil 4. Please don't eat me Miyamoto, but I'm taking a stand against sneaking missions.

DAMN YOU FRONZ, DAMN YOU.

This is a really tough one for me. I love the Zelda series with all my heart and Resident Evil 4 was just as amazing. The funny thing is when I would get frustrated with Reisdent Evil 4 I would pop in Wind Waker to calm myself down a bit. Both games are amazing when you look at them in there respective catergories. But I am going to have to go with Resident Evil 4, it was nothing liked I played before and the action cutscene were awesome and the boss battles were just plain epic.

One vote! I remember I didn't vote last time, due to the fact I love both RE4 and SSBM, just for curiousities sake, what happens if a debate ends up in a tie? what is the tiebreaker? if there even is one.

Anyways, RE4 and LoZ: WW. I got to give my vote to RE4, just because I logged in more hours in that game than LoZ: WW. Wind Waker was awesome but it was too easy and exploration wasn't such a main point of the game. Although I actually enjoyed sailing around, there wasn't really any motivation to go out and discover every island out there. It was exploration for explorations sake. RE4 on the other hand had some crazy tough sections, double Garrador hallway was a nightmare for me and Salazars right hand is a pain the buttocks without a rocket launcher. But, the hard parts weren't hard due to cheapness or anything. Also, WW was quite short (in comparison to other LoZ games) and RE4 was actually quite long (first playthrough alone for me was about 20 hours).

Vote: Resident Evil 4

also, no bonus question? or is the monday mind teaser the bonus?

Eh no, the game was plenty popular on GC, and the PS2 version ran, controlled, and looked like crap compared to the GC version just like all the other Capcom GC games that were ported to it (Killer 7 is virtually unplayable on PS2).

And RE4, coz' as much as I love WW's look and sound, in all honesty I got lost and bored wit it =/

Considering I have only played the gamecube version and have little to no interest to get the PS2 version I am going to have to disagree with you there.

I actually just bought RE4 for Wii and was planning on playing it next (just beat No More Heroes -- I'm catching up after a long VG hiatus, and brought my Wii to my lady's house. Upon return home, I will begin catching up on 360, starting with Mass Effect).

I withhold my vote until then, but I must say my heart leans toward Zelda. Either way, I guess I better get crackin', especially given the support drummed up so far for RE4.

Not to sound like a dick, but, from my knowledge, a lot of RE fans waited for the PS2 version, rather than buy a GC just to play RE4. It also sold more units on PS2 than GC (400,000 more, or something). I'm not denying the impact of the game, I just think it would be better to put this on a PS2 game debate.

Hm.

I don't know...I'm going to be rational here. Wind Waker is one of my favourite games. Everything is near perfect about it except the fetch quest...RE4 on the other hand I think has less flaws...Although the final boss was a bit disappointing.

This is sadistic.

The games are so different both are so successful at creating their respective atmospheres. The graphics are definitely the best on the system and are both beautiful on completely opposing ends of the spectrum. Windwaker's advancement of Ocarina's combat was great, the dungeons felt fresh and the story was quite a departure, incredible though...

RE4 of course was the redefining of, not only a franchise, but a genre. The execution was incredible and the rediculous story was delivered in a pretty effective way. Not to mention the masterful implementation of the often annoying QTE...

I think...I have to give this to RE4. I was in love with Wind Waker more, it was the graphics, the nostalgia. RE4 though managed to drag me into a world I never hoped to enter and over all it's got less flaws...

RE4, though it breaks my heart.

While I love wind waker it just had too many flaws to consider it over RE4. The triforce hunt, only 4 real dungeons, etc. It could have been better with more dev time.

So my vote is for Resident Evil 4. I still consider it to be one of the 10 best games ever made.

"Also, RE4 shouldn't be in ANY sort of match to decide top GAMECUBE games. It only got popular when features were added and it was shipped to the biggest console at the time, PS2. The GC version isn't anything special compared to the PS2 version."

So what you're saying is that RE4 was a bad game until it came to the PS2? You're an idiot. The gamecube version was better than both the PS2 and PC versions which toned down the graphics. The PS2 had extras but they weren't really worth the downgraded experience. The game was made for the gamecube.

Both great games, but Wind Waker has so much more memorable personality as a game. The graphics and the music will still be relevant for many years to come.

This one is a super hard choice, it's almost utterly unfair to choose as they are equally perfect in my book. I have to tilt my vote to RE4 though on this, simply because I play it more on Wii these days, and waggle+aiming/shooting, is like the best thing ever.

It's so painful to choose between the two... very painful.

But I am going with Resident Evil 4.

Damn. This absolutely kills me, since Wind Waker is one of the few things that can make me truly happy at any given time, but I'm going to have to go with Resident Evil 4.

As truly phenomenal as Wind Waker is, I can think of ways in which it's flawed. RE4, on the other hand, was and is just about perfect.

I love how many people think this is a no brainer, and yet it seems to be a very close race at this point.
Vote: Wind Waker

It's tough because I love both games and have sunk massive amounts of time into each, but I just think Wind Waker does much more for video games as a medium than does Resident Evil. Yeah, it's a great action game, it's a fantastic action game in fact, but that's about as much as you can say. Whereas I could go on for hours about everything that makes Wind Waker such an incredible experience.

Wind Waker was a good game but a weak entry in the Zelda series (especially since it followed up the flawless Majora's Mask). RE4 on the other hand is the best in the series and redefined it's genre.

So yeah, RE4.

Going with RE4 here. Windwaker was nice, and fun, and pretty, but had way too many damn fetch quests! I mean, good LORD did it have fetch quests! Like, Myamoto must have been walking down the street and passed the Fetch Quest Store, and there was a banner on the store that said 'Going out of business sale!' on it or something, so he bought the store out. I can't remember where I was going with that, so I'll just reiterate that RE4 gets my vote.

I still don't know why MM is as acclaimed as it is. I've beaten every major platform release of Zelda (major platform releases excluding the wand of gamelon and that other turd), no less than 5 times each (barring TP, as I just haven't had time to do it that many times yet), yet I have not been able to stand beating MM ONCE. I just don't like it. I thought WW had a very epic feel to it, and the gratuitous sailing never bothered me all that much.

RESIDENT EVIL 4! I remember a long long time ago when i was in grade 7 or 8 there was this trailer for the 'new' Zelda game that was suppose to come out on the new generation of consoles. It involved Gannon and Link fighting and the graphics blew me and my fellow elementary school friends away! Then that game came out with its little cell shading and cute little characters. What a disappointment.

Wind Waker is fun, but along with padding you can't skip cut scenes. I've found that a very invaluable factor in game replay. It's why I enjoy replaying Twilight Princess.

So RE4, for faster pace, when the games are otherwise just as excellent.
