Game Debate to the Death! Katamari Damacy VS Metal Gear Solid 2 photo

Last week was the final round of the Nintendo 64 odd debate brackets. GoldenEye 007 is one of the most talked about N64 games of all time, and if there was ever a game from the same era to put it to the test, then surely The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be the one most worthy. Many people expected landslides in both directions, proving that each side underestimated its debating competition. Both games put up a good fight, yet one clear winner remained standing in the end. Here are the results:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (71 votes) -- Winner!
  • GoldenEye 007 (44 votes) -- "I'm in-VINC-ible!" -- Oh wait . . .

This week we enter the PlayStation 2 round of odd debates, and to celebrate, I've rehashed the very first game debate ever posted on this site. Originally, the way these debates would work, is that I'd pick two commonly debated games, as well as two games you've almost never heard compared before. The results would often be interesting and educational, and that's why I started these odd debates once again.

So this week we see Katamari Damacy and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty face off yet again. Their gameplay controls? Nothing alike. Their graphics? Couldn't strive for more different extremes. Their stories? One line plot versus several hours of dialogue. This debate should be challenging, and demands some lengthy consideration before casting your vote. Don't just go with your gut; weigh the pros and cons of each game and really think about your answer.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PS2 childhood friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What's your favorite PS2 game?

Ouch, sizzling harsh decission for me.

Aghhh... I think I'll go by... Katamari. Metal Gear Solids are freaking balls to the wall awesome but Katamari is a whole original concept itself.

I could say metal gear 2, until metal gear 3 came and did it right.

Katamari Damacy I will say just because nobody else does, and it has rainbow beams and a cow on the cover and you can run over children.

I don't have a favroite ps2 game.

Katamari Damacy. It seemed like MGS2 at first, but the soundtrack to KD is so fucking good, it pulled ahead.

MGS2 all the way. I don't think the games are really comparable since they have two completely opposite appeals and goals in mind. I hate to make this analogy, it's not perfect; but, MGS is like a Kubrick film, with a more niche and cult following compared to say Mel Brooks with less serious intent and just wanted for people to have a good time. It would be like comparing A Clockwork Orange to Young Frankenstein, both movies are amazing but depending on my mood I'd rather watch one over the other.

(Also: I probably used the semicolon incorrectly, but everybody's doing it)

Dtoid staff have been brought up on involuntary satutory rape charges for placing Katamari Damacy within proximity to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. This is a criminal offense in many states and provimces of the world, but on this case, I am standing by Dtoid and casting my vote for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for being one of the greatest games I have ever played. Let it be known, though, my condolences for Katamari Damacy, which I have enjoyed to a smaller degree.

MGS2 had an amazing amount of immersion. Just the number of things that interact with your tv screen is impressive (water, goggles, bird shit, fog, ice.. etc). There's almost always three ways to do anything in the game. It really -- gameplay-wise -- took metal gear to the next level. But the story? SUUUUUUUUUCKED. sorry. it was terrible. I think if the liquid arm weren't in there, it could have been salvaged.
*SPOILER* The whole Y2K was a front for installing global surveillance software idea was _really_ cool *END SPOILER*, but it didn't make up for things like vamp and otacon, or the Oedipus side story. or SSS having twelve different *gotcha!* meanings. I'm won't mention raiden.... except right there.

MGS2 is still a great game, though. But since it's the worst game in the (great) series, my vote goes to:

Katamari Damacy! it blew me away! I never saw it coming. The game is so simple: "push the ball, pick up stuff" And girls love it once they've tried it. The level design was orthodox, but really clever. What other game has played with scale so well? NONE! that's who! It was the first game in a long line of decent expansion packs. oh... those were sequels? could have fooled me. While it is no longer a budget title.. it came out at $20. How awesome is that!? very. Do I like answering my own questions? yes.

And the number one ps2 game: Grand Theft Auto III (the liberty city one). I miss the chalk outlines when dead NPCs fade away. why'd they get rid of that!?

God this is tough. I don't own a PS2, and yet these are the 2 PS2 games I own. Don't ask me why.
I think I'm gonna have to go with Metal Gear. It just did more to push the medium forward in terms of production value, cinematic quality and storytelling. It was legitimately epic. Not that Katamari doesn't have it's place in the medium, we definitely need those thinking-outside-the-box type games to keep video games from stagnating, and Katamari is fantastic in that regard. Still gonna go with MGS.

VOTE: MGS2
great debate this week!

Both revolutionary in their own rights, played both enough to flesh out an opinion out of it. It's heart-breaking to have to choose between one of them but I'll vote for MGS2. I've (rarely) seen games with a funky gameplay/ambiance like Katamari Damacy but I've never ever seen a game with a script/story like Metal Gear Solid 2.

Katamari is better because MGS has always (even in MGS4) had frustratingly archaic controls, lazy and confusing storytelling, and overall it's just a clumsy game. Katamari was was almost perfectly executed for what it what, had an excellent and unique sense of style, great music, great graphics and art direction, and fun gameplay.

As for the bonus question, I've got to pick both God of War and God of War II. Easily.

Katamari - by a landslide. I have played both and enjoy both, but Katamari takes it - based on the cultural (or countercultural ) impact it had - what little that was.

I guess when it comes down to it, I feel like MGS2 was like a movie you could be in and Katamari was the gestalt idea of a video game - groundbreaking and amazingly fun.

These games aren't even in the same fucking universe's leagues. I'll call for MGS2, but that's only because I like it more. Now if you pitted MGS2 up against say Splinter Cell, that'd be a debate.

Lol sorry for the drama, but anyways, thats how I associate the game with, happy feelings!

For me, Katamari Damacy.

If we're going to be arguing about the quality of the game, I think it would probably go to MGS2, but there's something to be said for importance, too. MGS2 might have been a very well done stealth-action-shooter thing, but it was still a stealth-action-shooter thing, and it had been seen before. Katamari was something new and different on a console that didn't have a lot of new and different, and even though it could just as easily have been a stripped-down Flash version and not have changed that much, it was inspiring enough to give rise to games like De Blob and Okami, titles which would have flunked miserably in a publisher's eyes if Katamari hadn't already proved that different can do well.

katamari was fucking brilliant. Everything from the gameplay to the style to the storyline is brilliant but i have to go with mgs2. The scope of that game makes it stand out. MGS games can always be counted on to provide some of the most exciting and powerful experiences in gaming.

Metal Gear Solid 2.

I'm a fan of story driven titles and clever dialogue. one of my favorite moments in gaming history was when the voice of coronel Campbell told me that I've been playing for too long on MGS2 a genuine WTF? moment.

Favorite PS2 game? The original God of War

And since I forgot to post it in my other comment, Splinter Cell came out about a week after MGS2 and showed what a real stealth game was all about, time and time again the SC series have had much better gameplay than Metal Gear with only the story helping MGS(and even then not by much.)
