Game Debate to the Death! Handheld Metroid VS Handheld Castlevania photo

Last week I asked everyone how they preferred positioning their next generation gaming consoles -- horizontal or vertical? Everyone made some sex jokes and a few people even cleverly retorted with "Diagonal!" The results were pretty even though, so it made for a good debate:

  • Vertical: 39 votes
  • Horizontal: 42 votes - winner!

This week I'm taking another great reader suggestion (from our now famous naked reader Dexter345) and making the Metroid handheld games go to battle against the Castlevania handheld games. Both game series have graced the same Nintendo handhelds, and both have received great reviews, but which is better as a whole?

The setting in the two series is dramatically different from each other, but gameplay is somewhat similar, so weigh the pros and cons, cast your votes, give a short reasoning, and check back next week for a winner.

I would have to go with handheld Metroid, before the DS. the side scrolling Metroid's on the GBA are amazing. Not much a fan of Hunters though

I love Castlevania! I'm going with that. Besides, the only portable Metroid game I have is Fusion.

You can't beat Metroid 3.

Vote: Metroid

I must sit this debate out, i've only played a few handheld metroid games, and none of the castlevania handheld games. now that i finally have a ds i plan on finding out what ive been missing though, i've only heard good things about them. I'm guessing I will still like Metroid handhelds better though simply because of the setting and moves.

Metroid. Sure Hunters wasn't great but Zero Mission and Fusion were great.

Also, the Castlevania games started getting really repetitive.

Vote: Metroid.

No contest here, without a doubt Castlevania wins this debate.

No Metroid game can come close to the amazing DS showings of Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow. Dawn of Sorrow is probably my favorite Castlevania of all time if not one of my favorites of all time period.

Castlevania gets my vote. Metroid Prime: Hunters, while creative and graphically pleasing, just isn't as enjoyable as Dawn of Sorrow or Portrait of Ruin.

2D side-scrolling fun Metriod games, can't really judge Castlevania on the account I only played one game, and lost intrest before finishing it. My vote goes for Metroid.

Can't decide, they both do similar things in different ways, and I appreciate both of them almost equally. But Hunters wasn't the greatest. So no vote.

The original post doesn't make it clear what aspect of Metroid you're supposed to look at, since it says the Metroid Prime series instead of just Metroid. Furthermore, we're just looking at handheld games, so we can't include Super Metroid (or Symphony of the Night) in this arguement.

Either way, definately Castlevania; Fusion tried to hold my hand too much, while Metroid Prime: Hunters is more of Quake with a Metroid skin. That leaves the superb Zero Mission, which is out-numbered by Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, as well as either Portrait of Ruin or Circle of the Moon, depending on your tastes.

Fusion was decent. Kinda a poor man's Super Metroid. I heard Zero Mission was decent, but it's the original with new graphics. I prefer the original frankly, so I dunno. That got ported anyway on the GBA, so I'd go with that one.

I won't touch the new castlevania games, DS or GBA. I played the first one on the GBA, saw how much it had changed since Super Castlevania and I never wanted to mess with it again. Too much back and forth crap. I like my Metroid like that. My castlevania games all have a linear progression.

And keep the freakin' RPG out of my Mega Man.

Castlevania. Probably just the setting more than anything. The brooding atmosphere of evil waiting to be vanquished sort of wins out against wandering lonely planets to stop menacing aliens.

I would go with Metroid only if they do one for the DS in the faithful spirit of Super Metroid. No super-linear crap (*cough*Fusion*cough*), and bring back the equipment select screen.

Definatly Castlevania. I just beat Portrait of Ruin and its one of my favorite games ever. Metroid was fun for a while, but I sucked at it and the single player was boring and did'nt last long. Castlevania is my vote.

Metroid, as in 2d metroid games? Metroid Prime is only on gamecube, DS (in 3d), and will be on Wii.

If its the 2d games my vote goes to Metroid. Castlevania has been getting MIGHTY repetitive, even with the latest release, despite it still being an AWESOME game.

Holy crap, did I suggest this? This is a tough decision. Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission were excellent, but then so were Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin...

I'm going to have to vote Castlevania, just because there are more of them. Also, because Metroid Prime: Hunters was not nearly as good as the 2D Metroid games.

Metroid Prime Hunters sucked. Pinball was good fun. Zero Mission and Fusion are in leagues of their own for great 2D gameplay. As far as Castlevania games go, I've only started at Aria of Sorrow and worked my way up to Portrait of Ruin, and they were all pretty great. Harmony of Dissonance really put me to sleep. So overall I would have to go with....

Castlevania.

Metroidvania. Castledroid.
They're both great series. I've had so much fun with both, but on my old green GB I played the heck out metroid2, finding glitches and secrets for years. Castlevania on green gb wasn't as good for me.

OH! If it's metroid prime hunters (the only handheld metroid PRIME) vs all handheld castlevania games, castlevania all the way.

...but if the author just didn't know the diff, metroid.

So, I'm really torn here. Metroid kicked this whole thing off, but I'll be god damned if Castlevania SotN isn't about the best game ever. That means that by their more recent portable iterations, they're on equal footing, IMO. I love Metroid.

But I gotta give this to Castlevania.

That said, if Metroid beats Castlevania to WiFi co-op through the campaign, it will win my heart back. Just, uh, throw the SA-X in as the second player. *cough*

And quit with the Prime games on DS. They aren't good. No, really, they aren't. Konami is kicking your ass, Nintendo, because they're doing your Metroid gig better than you are. I'm sure you don't care, with your money-printing DS, but come on.

Castlevania times 10.

ENOUGH TALK, HAVE AT YOU!

(yes, I know that's from SotN which isn't on handheld but the new handheld games have been basically just trying to match the awesomeness of THAT game and coming only a tiny bit away from succeeding. Being almost as good as one of the greatest games of all time gets you a vote from me)

As someone who owns two Castlevania and two Metroid games for the Gameboy Advance, I'm definitely going to have to go with Metroid. Castlevania is fun and all, but there's just so much more you can do in Metroid games.

It's unfair for people to even be MENTIONING Hunters or Pinball. The post specifically stated "the gameplay is somewhat similar", meaning only the sidecrolling games should be compared.

In that respect, I think Metroid wins, but only by a shade. Metroid gameplay has been the same since the NES; Castlevania has taken nearly twenty years to get to what the original Metroid achieved. Nearly every review for the modern Castlevanias has mentioned "metroid". Don't get me wrong, Castlevania is amazing. But it needs another twenty years of evolution to get to where metroid is now.

Plus, Metroid survived the move to 3D a whole lot better than castlevania did.

I'm fairly new to Castlevania, having only bought Super Castlevania IV from the Virtual Console a few weeks ago and buying Portrait of Ruin shortly after. The games have really drawn me in, which is really kind of odd, since I never really cared for this kind of theme. After playing for a week, I've put 24 hours into PoR, and I'm extremely close to having every item and monster listed in the guides section. I enjoy this game every time I play it, which isn't something I can say about many games.

Thinking about Metroid, I don't think I like it as much. I haven't played that many (Prime, Fusion, NES Metroid, Super Metroid), but I've still played more Metroid than Castlevania. I like Metroid games, but they aren't as appealing as Castlevania. I don't really know why, I think the "Metroidvania" games of the series take elements from Metroid and add to them, which is something I really like.

I vote for Castlevania.

Zero mission is awesome. Fusion is really good, but too short. Prime hunters is a FPS rather than a proper metroid game(which was disapointing). Castlevania games on the GBA and DS have been consistently brilliant. Usually enormous, taking hours and hours to beat, and almost always with craploads of collectibles and extras once you're done. It's got to be castlevania for me. Metroid invented the style, but I think castlevania perfected it.
