Game Debate to the Death! GoldenEye 007 VS The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time photo

Now that the Presidential election is over, we can move on to the debate that really matters! Last week we had a ruthless matchup that readers often compared to picking which of their children they loved more. While there were dozens of votes for both sides, as well a vicious bonus question battle, in the end the winner was clear. Here are the results:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (101 votes) -- Winner!
  • Super Mario 64 (34 votes) -- "Oh no!"
  • Zelda series (27 votes) -- Winner!
  • Mario series (26 votes) -- "Mamma Mia!"

This week we enter the Nintendo 64 odd debate finals bracket, with Ocarina of Time fighting the FPS winner from the first round for the championship. With a single player adventure game versus a multiplayer shooting game, this couldn't be more of an odd debate final for us to decide on. Will nostalgia weigh in more? Or will you make your pick based on how these two games have stood the test of time?

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some N64 childhood friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Then we move on to the first PS2 round of these odd debates.

P.S. There's still a few Mind Teasers that are unsolved!

Ocarina of Time... Like I said when I voted for Smash Bros over GoldenEye, GoldenEye was just never my thing. Looking back, it's even less so, while Ocarina is still something I'd gladly play...

I say Goldeneye... However the only reason I say this is because of the hours that myself and three friends played split-screen with it.

If I had no friends at the time, I would have said OOT.

Zelda all the way. That game is STILL fun to play every now and then.

I hated the controls for Golden Eye.

I never could get the hang of using buttons to look around. It fels WAY too jumpy for my tastes.

Well, I think Super Smash Bros. VS Ocarina of Time would have been at least a LITTLE more interesting, but this is how the dice were rolled, so I had no choice.

As for nostalgia -- I played both games far more than was healthy back in the day. Do I still play either of them on occasion? Zelda 64 has stood the test of time incredibly well and will always be a classic. However, in my opinion, GoldenEye is barely playable nowadays.

I'm still surprised GoldenEye won the first round when PC shooters were already progressing farther around the same time, but so be it. Usually in these odd debates, multiplayer games give single player ones a hard challenge, but not this time.

Landslide VOTE: Ocarina of Time. It's a well deserved win.

How is the Zelda series better than the Super Mario series?

I guess people love rehashed bullshit...

:O

That said, my vote goes for Zelda this time. It's one of the few N64/PSOne era 3D games that are still playable.

While I do remember some good times with Goldeneye, it never really picked up for me and my relatives. It also sucks now. It's pretty much unplayable.

Zelda, no question. Goldeneye only has nostalgia still going for it while OoT is still a blast to play.

also that isn't bond's hand to the left of the pp7...its his mouth

I'm not even going to bother voting for this because

1. I never played Ocarina. Or any Zelda for that matter. So I really have nothing to compare goldeneye to.

2. Ocarina is going to win anyway.

OOT has more than stood the test of time since it was first released. Goldeneye...not so much.

So OOT, no contest. This is the easiest debate I've seen yet.

007, because why not. It's not like it will matter who I vote for (OMG, just like in the real elections!).

That said, I'm glad the zelda vs mario series race was close. I picked mario, but it wasn't an easy pick.

And I don't care what everyone says. SM64 kicks OoT's ass.

Man, neither of the games I voted for made it to this round.

On the one hand, we've got an overrated but still excellent Zelda game. On the other hand, we've got a revolutionary multiplayer game that hasn't aged nearly as well as it could have.

My vote goes to Zelda, I guess. I could go back and play it today, but I couldn't do the same with Goldeneye.

If I were to base my opinion on the current playability and enjoyment of both game at this time it would have to go with Zelda. That game stands the test of time with gameplay, story, and so on.

However based solely on my childhood memories I have to vote for Goldeneye. All of the late nights playing 007 until we literally passed out from sleep deprivation, there are just so many epic evenings and battles.

Final vote: Goldeneye, just too much fun.

For me, Golden Eye 007.

This was a great multiplayer game (at the time) and it was awesome going over to friends houses to play.

I never really liked any of the Zeldas on the 64, they were garbage when compared to the NES/SNES versions and I actually thought Wind Waker was pretty decent...lol

OOT, because it is still highly playable. It's no "A Link to the Past though.

I think Perfect Dark offered WAY more than Goldeneye,in terms of replayability, and depth.

Also,to thoses who disliked the controls in Goldeneye (and PD,you can use two controllers for dual analog stick functionality, which was WAY ahead of its time.

Still going with Zelda, since it has aged very well. Goldeneye is kind of archaic by the FPS standards today, but Ocarina is still one of the best.

I prefer the Half-Life Goldeneye mod, for that game, anyway.

Christ people, Ocarina of Time. Nostalgia does not make Goldeneye a good game, as much as we all loved it when it came out. Ocarina of Time is still playable and relevant, while Goldeneye is only important for its presence on a console and how much people liked it back in the day.

I never had Goldeneye, but my next door neighbor had it, so I played my share of it. Not sure how it would hold up today (though I haven't tried). I actually had Zelda, though, and like I said for the last debate, I beat it a couple years ago, so that gets my vote without hesitation.

They were both amazing back in the day, but to be honest, they are very old and dated now.

I think I enjoyed Ocarina more while playing it, but I got a ton more playtime from Goldeneye, so my vote has to go with Bond on this occasion.

As for those that say these titles still stand up today, they don't really. They are both done and dusted, time to let go.

Goldeneye. For me it's easy, replayability, multiplayer, and hot chics that aren't fairies. I'm also one of those peeps who just doesn't understand the fascination of that particular zelda title. I preferred Windwaker.

Oh don't forget the golden guns.

Hmm...the game I spent weekends playing with my closest friends or that silly little game with the kid in a green dress...

Yeah no contest here - Goldeneye

(Although to be fair I would vote Ocarina of time IF the debate was purely based on which had aged better...I just got way more fun and playtime out of Goldeneye then I ever will out of OoT.).

Ocarina of Time. Like many others have said - it's still VERY playable, as are all of the Zelda games, imo. OoT is both simple and elegant, in its own way, large open areas, allowing for exploration, but not leaving the player overwhelmed (which is saying a lot for the era, nowadays it wouldn't cause anyone to bat an eyelash). I'd be interested in seeing an Ocarina of Time versus A Link to the Past matchup, personally. I'd actually have to think about which I'd vote for.

OoT is totally overrated and everyone says Goldeneye is dated now blah blah blah.

I would never go back and play EITHER of these games now, but I got about 5-10x as much playtime out of Goldeneye back in the day. So I'll give it my vote for all it's not worth.
