Game Debate to the Death! GoldenEye 007 VS Super Smash Bros. 64 photo

Last week we had an early Halloween Debate between Silent Hill and Resident Evil 2, as well as a separate debate between the two series. Both games proved to be huge winners in earlier PlayStation One debates, and this week each game came out a winner in one area. Here are the results:

  • Silent Hill (44 votes) > Resident Evil 2 (20 votes)
  • Resident Evil series (38 votes) > Silent Hill series (14 votes)

Interestingly enough, if you add the results of both debates, you get a tie. It will definitely be a debate we revisit once a year. This week we move on to the Nintendo 64 round of odd debate brackets, with two incredibly successful games of different genres.

Don't forget -- the point of these odd debates is not to just vote with your gut -- it forces us to be more analytical and think like a game designer. It gives us unique discussions that force everyone to think outside the box, consider all the pros and cons of each game, and compare and contrast them in a way that really makes us think about why we did or didn't enjoy a certain game.

Which games do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some N64 friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

P.S. So far, it looks like I've stumped you guys again! This week's Monday Mind Teasers still has an unsolved cover.

I'm going with Goldeneye, mainly because of how many more hours of my youth were wasted on that in comparison to Smash Bros. I don't think either of them hold up that well by todays standards but Goldeneye did a helluva lot to progress console FPS as we know it.

Yeah, Super Smash Brothers for sure. I'm a huge fan of the series. Goldeneye was good, but as it's been said, it hasn't aged well. Smash 64 has.

Goldeneye!... but that's a tough call.
I still remember that first weekend I rented goldeneye. I never left my friend's house. SSB was great, but it didn't claim as many late nights and neglected school assignments as Bond deathmatch did.

No xboxlive Goldeneye makes me cry..

Never owned Smash, put 100's of hours into Goldeneye. If you didn't have a PC, that was IT for FPS gaming back then, and I played the ever living fuck out of it. I got every single cheat unlock, fucked with every glitch, used a Gameshark to unlock hidden content, all kinds of crap.

I agree with the fact that Smash 64 has aged better, but IMO Goldeneye has such a special place in my childhood. Getting 3 buddies and spending an afternoon or a sleepover making up games within the game along with remote/proximity mines were the most fun to be had for me and my buddies at the time.

Damn, a hard decision
Still today we play 64 in a weekly dosis, with over 40 games to chose, and the only four we always play is: Conker BFD, Starfox, Goldeneye and Smash

But to be honest, the one we play the most is smash. It never NEVER get boring. 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, FREEEE FOR AAALL!!. I just love smash 64 so much and is my favorite still today. And the Gourmet Race song kick ass

Smash bros is my vote

I could probably write pages about either of these games, but I'll keep it simple- Smash Bros. invented a new kind of fun, Goldeneye merely exposed an existing type of fun to a larger audience. My vote goes to SSB.

Smash stands the test of time better, though, but I've had way more fun and memorable experiences playing 4 player split screen Goldeneye with friends

Smash bros opened up a whole new style of play for fighting games. Not many have tried to copy it, and sure it isn't a deep experience for most, but it's a great idea, and endlessly fun to play with new people.

Goldeneye had a great multiplayer and it was one of the few FPS games I actually enjoyed all the way through, but it just doesn't beat the step towards new ideas in Smash Bros.

Wow, good question.

On careful reflection, I realize that I could only really support Smash Bros.

Goldeneye was a fun FPS, and a rare exception to the movie-lisence-equals-crap-game law, and buckets of fun on a 4-way split screen (if your friends didn't suck). End of the day, its just a decent FPS that had pretty fair graphics for its day (and painfully primative in retrospect). Its only innovation IMO was bringing established PC FPS experiences to the consoles in a particularly succesful fashion.

Smash Brothers was a revolution on the other hand. A classic example of a game from Nintendo's "fun for all audiences" school with exciting cartoon combat, and a 'easy to learn, challenging to master' control and combat system. And OMG, you can make Mario and Fox McCloud fight!! That blew my mind.

I rented Smash Bros when it came out, but just after I rented it, I bought the game on a highschool field trip to DC (from Ontario, also back when it was cheaper for Canadians to buy shit in America). A friend had brought his N64 and Goldeneye. Well, in the hotel nobody wanted to play Goldeneye after we started on Smash Bros. Smash Bros dominated the console on the trip, and long after we got back.

Smash Bros not only wins against Goldeneye in this GDTTD, but Smash Bros KILLED Goldeneye in my peer group. We never really got back into it after that.

Man, this is a gooood one! It's gotta be Smash Bros. though. I wont say it was more fun because in that respect there's almost nothing between these two behemoths of audio visual entertainment, but Smash has held up better over time, and it was so well balanced. Having said that Goldeneye offered a great hardcore challege on the hardest skill setting, damn that was good, and getting all the cheats as a reward for completing a level superfast = genius idea. Wait, now I'm changing my mind, crap! Gotta stay strong!

Goldeneye is possibly my favourite game of all time...

A question of Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 may have resulted in a mental debate with myself. However, the memories of hiding around corners in the Archives with a golden gun just can't help but put a smile on my face.

Goldeneye, hands up, hands down.

How can there be so many people voting for Smash Bros? Goldeneye has aged well, both graphics and gameplay, while Smash Bros has gotten several sequels that offer the exact same gameplay, only better, rendering it obsolete. And no, Perfect Dark doesn't count.

I vote Goldeneye!

Lets see, a revolutionary shooter that defined the direction that, industry dominant, FPS multiplayers would take for over a decade or, a pretty fun 2 button fighter that you could play stoned and still be pretty much the same quality of player.

SSB is fun sure, but if we're anakyzing the merits of the games, Goldeneye clearly is superior.

Super Smash Bros, no question. Goldeneye hasn't aged well, but SSB is still unique and fun to play after all these years.

A little more personally, SSB was also the game that turned me into a gamer, and was the first one that I was actually good at on my own. So there will always be a little place in my heart for it. :D

Goldeneye without a doubt.

Smash Bros was a completely different game before it turned into the gratutitous Nintendo fan-service brawler. It had no name characters in a new, kinda strange style that would have died a silent death in the gutter. But Nintendo's characters saved it from such a demise. Only the characters are remarkable... they were already remarkable before this game. The gameplay, to be perfectly honest... not so much.

As for me, Smash was a good game, but Goldeneye 007 had a greater impact on the world, ushering in the age of the console FPS and reigniting console multiplayer. And I got to shoot the guards' nuts off... and they reacted accordingly.

As much as I loved Goldeneye with it consuming many hours of game time, both in it's single and multi player, it's Smash Brothers that gets my vote on this occasion.

Smash was a unique concept at the time (and still is really)in it's merging of the platform and beat 'em up genres in a way that really only Nintendo could have done with it's large back catalogue of colourful characters. With a fantastic alternative to the tradtional power bar and it's 4 person at a time combat it inovated in a couple of areas that no one had thought to before. It's something that only Nintendo themselves have come close to rivaling or beating.

This is not to take anything away from GoldenEye which is arguably the most succesful Movie/Video Game tie-in ever and it did a lot of things very well. It's just that Smash Bros did more.
