Game Debate to the Death! Damacy to the Death! photo

Last week's debate had us all rocking out to our own tunes, then South Park called us fags, and then we rocked out some more. The results are in, and it looks like there's a clear winner in Dtoid's Battle of the Bands 06 debate:

  • Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s: 5 votes
  • Guitar Hero: 15 votes
  • Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock: 17 votes
  • Guitar Hero II: 43 votes -- Winner!

Next year we'll have Rock Band and Guitar Hero go head to head, but this week we shift the focus to another game series that started slow and then caught on like wildfire. Back in 2004 a little game called Katamari Damacy came out and quickly collected katamari dust on the shelves, while a few of us kicked and screamed and pleaded that it wasn't getting the recognition it deserved. Word of mouth eventually paid off, and since then we've had three other fabulous friction games to enjoy. Few game characters have brought me as much joy as King of the Cosmos has, and this week is dedicated to him and his faithful Prince.

Which of the four Katamari games shown in the picture above did you enjoy the most so far, and why? Give us a reason for your Damacy decision, get some friends to give their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

i really liked the original the best. It was so new and fresh. Not that the others aren't good but that game really changed my defenition of a good game.

DAMACY FTW

We Love Katamari. It has the best music, the most original content, the most varied environments, arguably the best graphics, and the best "story".

Watch for yourself if you don't believe me.

We Love Katamari. It had everything the original did and more. Better music, more stages, more cousins, presents, everything. Plus, many of the levels and ideas managed to stay fresh at this point, unlike the latest entry into the series.

I'm going with We <3 Katamari since the levels were even more fun than the first, the music was just as crazy, and because i think the last level in We Love Katamari is perfect. I loved it when the camera zoomed so far out that you realized the perspective of the screen just bended and you're now rolling around your huge ball on only a slightly larger sphere. It was sort of like an introduction to Super Mario Galaxy :)

Katamari Damacy.

All the others are the same game in a different, less original, set of clothes anyway. This is the only real game in the "series."

People make fun of Mario for being derivative and over-used. Apparently none of those people played the Katamari game(s).

We <3 Katamari!

I'm with Tron on this one. I like these games for the fun colorful environment and new gameplay concept, but I keep coming back to the series because of the music. I havent played me and my, but Beautiful Katamari didnt blow me out of the water like the other two. I especially liked going to space and something besides the same fucking place slowly getting more congested.

Fine, I'm going to say it: Beautiful Katamari.

I love the sheer volume of things to find and collect. Being a huge fan of finding and collecting, I love all the Katamari games, but this one is better. The graphics are worlds better, while still maintaining the distinctive anti-graphic look.

Also, it is where I met Lucha, my favorite cousin by far.

We <3 Katamari.

Kuru Kuru Roku was debuted on this game. Best song they've done for the series. Also the missions were the most ludicrous. A million roses for you. Oh and you have to collect them for yourself first.

Really, it was the best game in the series so far. I don't dislike Beautiful, but it does seem shorter than the other entries.

Me and My was AWFUL. This game is only playable with dual analog. Sorry.

I prefer the original more. It might have the least amounts of lvls, but the control for the original game out-weights the others. I dunno why but the controls on the other 3 just doesn't mount up to the original.

I vote the original Katamari Damacy. It was so new and different, which accounted for a lot of its appeal. After that, it was just more of the same...

Don't even get me started on Me & My Katamari's controls or Beautiful Katamari's dubious downloadable content.

I really liked the original Katamari Damacy. I loved it originality. It had the best control handling (in my opinion). I couldn't stand Beautiful Katamari. I can't even finish it, it's frustrated me so much.

I say Katamari Damacy. The feeling you get when playing the game for the first time is like no other. We Love Katamari is excellent, and the co-op is good fun, but I still prefer the first game in some ways. I never played the PSP iteration and I've only played a demo of the 360 version, therefore I can't say much about those. So I pick Katamari Damacy.

It's a tough call between Katamari Damacy and We <3 Katamari, I thought they were both pretty awesome. I only played Me & My Katamari for a few minutes and Beautiful Katamari was okay, but not quite on the same level of awesome as the first two.

After playing Beautiful Katamari, I'm pretty convinced that they could just keep cranking out the sequels and I would play them all without complaint. As long as the levels are new, I don't really care if there are any big changes to the formula. Katamari is always fun, no matter what.

My vote goes to Katamari Damacy, since it was totally awesome and I have fond memories of playing it.

we love katamari.

the music is top notch....especially the relaxed etheral tune that plays when you roll up the cosmos. i used to just leave it on, playing in the background.

the varied gameplay is awesome...sure it's rolling up stuff, but each level was uniquie...i'm partial to the speed track and sumo levels and replayed them more than i should have.

the "final" level where you get to roll up everything...took it a step beyond the original with all the monuments and everything.

and the story made sense...somewhat. though i'm not entirely sure that's necessarily a positive thing for this series.

but it was the best by far. granted i haven't played beautiful katamari yet, but have heard it's pretty weak overall.

As this is a vote for the best Katamari game that easily goes to We <3 Katamari. It does everything the first did and then more plus the raceway track is incredible fun.

Variation = Win

I would say We <3 Katamary, yes the first was the one that started all that rolling crazyness but the second one perfected it. Beautiful is good too but the DLC bullshit bring down it's score.

It's sad, the series really lost its steam after We <3 Katamari. Beautiful Katamari really just felt like it was going through the motions.

Beautiful Katamari is aptly titled. The game LOOKS spectacular but it just doesn't play as good as the previous titles.

My vote has to go to We <3 Katamari. It just felt like a slight improvement over the original and it still gets played in my house from time to time. A rare achievement for a game that old.
