Game Debate to the Death!Counter-Strike VS World of Warcraft photo

Last week's debate brought us to the end of the PSP odd game debate brackets with two very deserving games in the finals. The votes were a dead tie half way into the tallying, but in the end one game broke ahead and never looked back. Here are the results:
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (24 votes) -- "Da da da dahhhhhh da da DA da dahhh" -- Winner!
  • Patapon (15 votes)

This week we enter the PC odd game debate brackets. For those of you keeping track, this is the last of the very lengthy "odd game debate" tournaments. After that, by the end of June we'll return to reader suggestion based debates, as well as a healthy dose of the regular hair-puller debates that I think up.

For this week, which game do you think is better, and why? The two games have more in common than you might think at first glance, although the vast differences are what you'll need to consider the most before making your pick. Give it some serious thought, get some PC friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What is one thing you don't like about the game you voted for?

Tough decision, but I'd say Counter-Strike due to it's mod-ability. There is limitless variety in gamemodes, maps, and models.

I'm going to have to go with counterstrike mainly because it is what got me into pc gaming. The thing about counterstrike is that they need to make a sequel and not like CS: source a full blown sequel.of course keep the core gameplay intact.

I'd go for Counter Strike since I never played WoW.

Bonus: It's insanely high learning curve. I've played many a FPS, but something about this one needs to have everything in place to even get a kill cause people can kill really quick from far as shit, and while you try to do the same, it doesn't quite work. Or maybe I just suck. lol

Back in colij I wrote many essays about the powerhouse that was, and still is, Counter-Strike. CS deserves most of the praise it gets, and is still one of the best insta-fun games to this day. World of Warcraft, on the other hand, offs not just quality, but quantity.... and more quantity... and more. I got into gaming because of the whole concept of exploring imaginary worlds, and WoW remains as one of the most massive imaginary worlds that exists as a reality to well over ten million digital characters' players.

CS get major bonus points of mods and unlimited servers and maps. But WoW gets even more bonus points for having annual (okay, every few years) expansions.

Vote: World of Warcraft.

Counter-Strike. The one thing I don't like about it is that reg is so troublesome. But the game itself is awesome.

Counter Strik: Source was always a cool game When I first played it after beating Half Life 2 (on my friends computer it came with both). It was exciting when you actually coordinated things with your team, calling out positions, telling your teammates when a terrorist was spotted or killed, working together in little units. Of course, little did I know that the game usually wasnt played like that. Still, I enjoyed it and dumped plenty of time into playing with friends and skinning/modding it.

I remember when I first played World of Warcraft too. It was literally magical. The world was so big and everything seemed so new and interesting to me. I spent hours exploring, even if it wasnt for quests, and I wanted to learn everything. Playing it now, with two expansions out that feeling has passed but I still have a game that usually gives me something interesting to do, amazing places to see, and an incredible lore to delve into and enjoy.

Both were fun, but I'm only playing one now and it overall has given me more enjoyment and that's:

World of Warcraft.

The amount of time I've spent playing WoW dwarfs my CS time, but I really have to give my vote to CS. The community is hard as hell to get into if only because the game has such lasting power that there are some hard core players out there. Anything that balanced, and that community driven need my vote. [bonus: I think I covered that with my community comment, but if more is needed/wanted, a generic AWP comment can go here]

I would have to say Counter Strike Series on this one, especially Source. Not only did Counter strike show that modding a game can be successful as far as popularity, longevity and simple appeal. Also, to be honest, requires a bit more skill on a minute-by- minute basis.

As far as Wow, its more of a Grindfest than anything, even though an equal ammount of time could be sucked into both. Personally, I feel more satisfied playing on CS, as over the years the variety of stuff to do in game (climb maps, surf maps) increases and is added onto by community.

If Wow had a bigger community contribution ability, I'd probably be more sucked into it, and thus it would be a winner.

(Bonus) I hate the riot shield in CS 1.6 ... which is why I moved onto Source... but generally I don't like getting stuck on a team who gets themselves killed far too easily (general peeve anyways of course).

Oh! I forgot my bonus question.

The one thing above all that I hate about WoW (despite voting for it) is that people take it far, far, far too seriously for a game. I know a few people that have literally thrown their lives away to play this game, because they feel its so goddamn important, that is makes me sad. Depressing, I know, but I'm glad I know how to enjoy it even after seeing that happen to people and to make sure I never let a game do the same to me.

counter strike.
i thought long and hard about which one is better and lasts longer
at first i thought wow due to it being an mmo and how it had in-depth skills and such but then i thought no counter strike is "better" than wow because of the modibility the possibility for CS are literally endless be it skins, maps,
and other such mods. because while wow may is deeper game-play wise and thats it. while counter strike wins in every other respect, thus is the nature of valve games.

bonus: like i said CS isn't very deep.

my vote: counter-strike. like many, this was the game that got me truly hooked to the whole 'online' thing. i never thought i would really get 'addicted' to a game, yet there i was, rushing home from the 9th grade to drink soda after soda and frag until my hands seized up. i definitely tried to get into WoW, yet the fighting system always bothered me to no end, and that held me back from ever really enjoying it. another big factor, in fact probably the main one is that WoW had a monthly fee and all my friends were stoners who couldnt be bothered to have yet another costly habit. also, 1.6 could be run on virtually any of our computers, so having epic LAN parties were frequent and awesome. it was like a natural evolution in hanging out: from playing GoldenEye in our pyjamas as youngins, to a stinky basement full of whirring hot PCs as greasy teens. I know nostalgia is not an argument at all, but I guess my point is that while both games had terribly addictive multiplayer, CS was that extra bit more accessible that made it so any one could hop in on a game without much effort (or money).

bonus: while modding was one of the most magical parts of CS, it also completely ruined games at times, with bastard 12 year old kids using steroid-like hacks that made them invincible.

Counter-Strike because MMORPGs suck and cost you Money even after you've bought the game.

Bonus: Mainly the cult people build around it. Believe it or not, by now there are about a hundred far superior shooter out there. It's no longer necessary to play CS.
