Game Debate to the Death! Counter-Strike VS Portal photo

Last week's debate could have gone so much worse, and I'm thoroughly pleased that it went as well as it did. I went into the PC odd game debates nervous about what games I could possibly pair up against Portal, since I really didn't want to shy away from including it in the brackets. I originally had it matched up against Myst, and still plan to have that debate in a few months, but I'm so glad the battle of old-versus-new went so well last week. Yeah, a lot of people didn't even know what TLJ was, and yes, some people voted for TLJ thinking it was actually Dreamfall, but long time Dtoid reader Im OK summed things up pretty well with:

TLJ is still getting far more votes than I would have expected, which is very heartening to me. I think this one may be closer than the crushing victory for Portal that I first suspected it would be. Whichever one ends up winning doesn't really matter because they are both awesome games which should be played by everyone.

Here are last week's expected, but encouraging, results:

  • Portal (52 votes) -- "This was a triumph." -- Winner!
  • The Longest Journey (38 votes)

This week we move on to the final odd debate finals debate bracket, and Valve happens to be sitting on both sides of the table. After the PC odd debates are completed, it's back to the random reader-inspired debates we're used to. For this week, which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PC friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What are some game debates you'd like to see in the near future? Suggest as many as you like!

Somehow PC feels like it needs more than 4 games... but Portal I guess.

Unless im wrong I thought Portal (the idea and first versions) started out as a mod until valve hired the team prior to releasing it as Portal.

Portal. Its sheer fun. I missed the CS craze, I tried it when Source came free with HL 2 GOTY edition, but its not my thing. I'm good at fps games, but i tend to overextend (and hence die) more often than not, generally out of boredom when hanging back and trying to stay alive. That does not work in CS.

Counter-Strike for sure. I was just playing it before I logged in to Dtoid today. Portal? Been there, done that. Counter-Strike continues to be played by myself and my friends, both 1.6 and Source.

i could say a lot of nice things about both these games, having fallen in love with portal immediately, and also being a 1.6 vet...
due to it's incredible storytelling though:

Portal.

Bonus: It's super late so i can't really think of anything...
maybe Ico vs. Shadow of the Colossus?
OH! What about Beyond Good And Evil vs. Psychonauts?

CS. The game was a phenomenon, SO many people played it during a time when online shooters weren't really that popular. I think it kind of helped to bring online shooters into the spotlight. Portal was great, but didn't have nearly as much of an impact as Counter-Strike.

Counter Strike. I'll always go back to it. Can't say the same for Portal.

Counter-Strike can be summed up in a few words: Terrorists fight Counter-terrorists.

Portal can too: You have a gun that lets you make portals through which you can teleport to get to places.

Although CS is a great game and will be played until the end of the earth, portal practically changed my life. So, my vote goes to portal.

To tell the truth I've never really liked CS. It was a well made shooter in its time but there wasn't anything special about it for me. So this definitely goes into the Portal vote for me no question.

Bonus:
Majora's Mask vs any popular game, excluding OoT and ALttP.
MGS3 vs MGS4.
A Stalker title vs Fallout 3
Super Mario World vs SMB3
Metroid Fusion vs Metroid Zero Mission vs Super Metroid. Any 2 of those that is.
Morrowind vs Oblivion
Mario Kart DS vs New Super Mario Bros.
San Andreas vs GTAIV
System Shock 2 vs Bioshock
N(PC) vs N+
N(PC) vs any 2D platformer
WarioWare inc. vs anything
Symphony of the Night vs Super Metroid
Dawn of Sorrow vs Order of Ecclesia.

And above all:

I'm ashamed that this is even being debated.

CS' impact on both the individual and gaming in general is incomparable.

If you missed out on CS in it's prime, you're a fucking noob. Yeah, I said it.

Good day.

Although I bloody love Portal I think Counter Strike should really win this one. If you think about what that game did for online gaming (fps in particular) WAY before CoD4 came along! Give Counter Strike its proper recognition.

Counter-Strike hands down. It was the beginning of the end and has had so much input in games like COD and Socom.

I've not played it for years, but that's only because I've got me some Socom now. Without that I'd probably have to dig out the PC and fire up some CS.

But my vote goes to Portal

Counter-Strike.

Portal is a weak single player experience with "puzzles" that are no harder than the compare the images brain teasers in the Sunday funny pages and is not deserving of the praise lapped onto it. I'm baffled and unable to see what the hardcore Portal fans see in this game. Maybe it's also because I find the humor falls flat and personally loathe games that wedge in things to the game world to purposely create memes and toys ("cake is a lie", Companion Cube).

I've been playing CS on/off for the last 6 or so years. I was finished with Portal in 1.5 hours, never to return. The game with staying power gets my vote.

Portal: I just don't like CS:S, I find it a boring game to play and it's one you can't pick up and play unless you were playing constantly the nights before - you'll suck otherwise.

Portal is funny, pretty and quite thought-provoking at points. Its length is short, but as many others have said, it's better than it being far too long.

As for a Vs. topic or game suggestion how about a debate between the top rated games of a said year or games that get the "classic" status. It doesn't have to be recent it can be any year really.

2 completely different games. Portal had a really cool storyline and was a blast to play through although it only took 4 hours to beat. CS is fucking classic, I still play it online to this day and it really seperates the good gamers from the chumps.

Portal. The one game (that I can think of right now) that I would suggest to non-gamers who needed something to give them an idea about the possibilities of games as an artform/expressive medium.

Don't get me wrong. Portal is AWESOME, but, CS is so much more important. It almost single handedly legitimized mods as a viable way to make games. Without it, we wouldn't have Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, or portal. Also, The game is incredibly fun and super well balanced (except for the awp, shat shit is ferocious). If you can make it past the learning curve, which is really more of a learning cliff, there's years of joy to be had.

vote CS!

bonus: Starcraft Vs. Diablo or Diablo(II)
