Game Debate to the Death!<br>Vertical or horizontal consoles? photo

Recently I asked you Dtoiders to suggest some good game debate articles to use, and I received plenty of good ideas, many of which you can be sure to see in the near future. The one that caught my interest the most though, was one of the most simple suggestions of all, because it involves more than just a gaming knee-jerk reaction to answer. Dtoider Vyruz asks: How do you position your Xbox 360/Wii/PS3? Horizontal or vertical? We now live in a wireless world, so it's important to finally debate this to the death once and for all.

The 360 suggests vertical use with its sexy hourglass shape and firm footing, and the Wii even comes with a slot to store it safely in a vertical position without worrying about it knocking over during heated Wii Sports play. The PS3 also tempts you to turn it tall, but its weight suggests your timid instincts might be best for a wide positioning. Many gamers insist vertical is no good for game discs, and the opposing side often yells "noob" in between "rofls."

I'm sure there's even game theory involved with what type of gamer you are -- perhaps vertical console gamers are the type who are more bold and seldom save, quickly bypassing text and cutscenes. While horizontal console gaming hands prefer a more methodical gaming experience, and always double check missions before setting out on a quest. But enough psychobabble -- let's just hear which of the two you prefer -- horizontal or vertical?

I say horizontal. Lesser chance of it tipping over.

No real preference here, but I find it somewhat amusing that the main argument against vertical orientation relates to the possible problems gravitational force/sexual orientation/also cocks could cause, and yet the entire vertical movement was inititated to FIX problems with early PSones. I have one of those boat anchors, and it was absolutely non-functioning horizontally.

Prodigium: I had a similar problem with my original Playstation. Oddly enough, it worked perfectly upside down. Go figure.

As for the debate, if there's room, horizontal. If there's not, vertical.

I have a vertical Wii on top of a sideways PS2. Both ways work, it's just whatever's easier. So I'll vote for flat down.

The best of both worlds! This is my Nintendo:
Horizontal console, verticle cartridge.

The 360 is too flawed when it comes to vertical. I mean the wires are all over the place. Ethernet on top? A/V and power on the bottom? It looks pretty shit to me.

I did a similar poll on game spot months back before the ps3 was released.

127 people said they would keep their consoles horizontal
52 people said vertical.

I personally like them all vertical, but i have to keep the 360 and the ps3 horizontal since it is the best way they fit into my entertainment center.

It depends where there console is. I have an entertainment center with enough space on either side of the TV to fit my Wii and 360 Vertically. However in other instances I use the Horizontal when the System is free-standing (Under a TV table or on a dresser).

I think it depends on where you've put it though.

i have a launch day day 360 that has always been horizontal.

might be the best way to go considering that almost all my friends that have had an early 360...have sent theirs back for replacements. they went vertical. I think it looks better, and by having a 3 year old...it WOULD have fallen by now if not for it laying down.

I prefer vertical. I keep almost all of my consoles vertical, just not my XBox and my GameCube (there really is no vertical for that one). I even used to keep my PS1 vertical, but that's just because it wouldn't read the discs unless I did that.

I got my bro's old PS2 and it worked fine and then it just stopped working. The whole time it was horizontal cause i heard of rumors that if it was vertical it will eventually ruin the spinning of the disc. Well I tilte it vertical and it worked and now i can go back to horizontal in its nice place on the shelf!

Lets see:

Wii: Vertical -as it was meant to be-
PS2: Vertical -Saves space. Looks cool-
Soon-to-be-PS3: Horizontal -Although I like it vertical, the thought of it falling over is WAY too much to bear.

I have my PS2 horizontal so that I can stack stuff on it. My Wii is, and will always remain, vertical since it was designed to be that way.
I don't have these, but here's how I would store them:
360 - Vertical
PS3 - Horizontal

Every single one of my consoles (Wii, Gamecube, Xbox, PS2) and my HP Slimline Media Center PC are horizontal to fit in my entertainment center. I had the Wii vertical before I got the new entertainment center and it looked and worked fine, but everything else was still horizontal.

I prefer horizontal because they're less likely to fall over, and I don't really care how the system "looks" on my table.

It depends on the shape, though. Since I got the PS2, I've completely lost respect for top-loading systems, and I like to keep stuff stacked on top of my PS2. When I get a 360, I'll keep it horizontal, with the PS2 on top. If I ever get a PS3, I'll keep it vertical, because you can't pile stuff on top of it.

As for my GameCube, it's positioned... in the closet.

I'd love to stand my 360 up vertically, but I don't have room; the table I have my TV on has a space underneath for my 360, but it doesn't fit vertical.

prefer, and go for, vertical, but am pissed off after knocking over my 360 twenty mins in Lost Planet and scratching the disk beyond belief and having to shell out for a new copy!...still go for vertical for my Box of X and Wii.

Horizontal For the 360 and Vertical for the Wii. I think the 360 does look sleek and awesome vertical but I would rather not take the chance of someone tipping my 360 over and ruining the system or the game. I have yet to hear about someones horizontal 360 tipping over and scratching the disc.

Horizontal Xbox360, Vertical Wii, Horizontal PS3. The 360 is H because of safety reasons. The Wii was meant to be V and seems safe that way (looks bad horizontal) and the PS3 is just like the 360, too damn expensive to risk it.

I go vertical with my 360 and Wii, but my PS2 (and if or when I get a PS3) will be horizontal. Since 2 out of 3 are vertical though, I'll go with my final answer:

Vertical

Okay for all of you nuggets out there , the Wii's disc drive was made exactly for standing up. The disc is stablized while spinning in the console. As for the Ps3 i'm not positive but if its Disc drive which is a tray like the 360's standing the console vertical would completely destroy the game inside. Whenever you stand a 360 console vertically the disc spins entirely too fast and isn't stable enough while doing so , so you might hear a grinding noise coming from the 360. Upon taking your disc out of the tray you might began to see the rings forming around your disc because of the grindage and un-stable 360 tray. I always wondered why so many people came into the game store that i work at with defective 360's , mostly due to the fact that they were standing their console up. A vertical 360 will scratch your disc after time and start freezing up. Microsoft says its okay to stand it up but keep doing so and spend another $400 on Microsoft's product again after your's freezes up. If you do lay it down you'll need an Intercooler ($20) , this system does cool off faster standing up but the greater chance you have of destroying your 360. As for the ps3 , probably the same problem. -just trying to save you college kids so money, knowing you shouldn't have bought any of the next-gen systems with your Loan Disbursment.

xbox1 = horizontal
wii, ps2 (old style) = vertical.

I wanted to put my wii vertical on my sub, but I was afraid the sub would cause the disc to skip around or scratch. It looks slightly doofy vertical, white amongst all the other black horizontal equipment. I actually put my nice vcr out in storage to make room for the wii vert.

I think I like my games and I dont think I want to pay someone to resurface them after they get all scratched up from playing the system vertically.****HINT****I hope all you guys who think they look cool standing up leave them that way, cause it brings quite a bit of business thru my front door.

the whole vertical is bad for the disk thing is bullshit. the centrifugal and gyroscopic forces trump the whole gravity issue.

so i go with vertical. it just looks sexier.

My 360 is on it's side, my PS3 is vertical, my Wii (when I get it) will be vertical. Mainly because the disc stabilizer in the 360 scares me, and it would look kinda ugly and not fit very well in my specific shelving if they were all vertical.

I have my 360 Vertical. I always preferred horizontal (in the past), but the 360 looks better vertical, and the HD is on the top as if its supposed to be there instead of haning off the side. Plus its space saving, not that I give a shit about that though.

I've always wondered whats best, my cousin used to always put his PS1 on its side, to make the disc run better apparently but with the 360 is it just the same both ways or?
