Game Debate to the Death!<br>Vertical or horizontal consoles? photo

Recently I asked you Dtoiders to suggest some good game debate articles to use, and I received plenty of good ideas, many of which you can be sure to see in the near future. The one that caught my interest the most though, was one of the most simple suggestions of all, because it involves more than just a gaming knee-jerk reaction to answer. Dtoider Vyruz asks: How do you position your Xbox 360/Wii/PS3? Horizontal or vertical? We now live in a wireless world, so it's important to finally debate this to the death once and for all.

The 360 suggests vertical use with its sexy hourglass shape and firm footing, and the Wii even comes with a slot to store it safely in a vertical position without worrying about it knocking over during heated Wii Sports play. The PS3 also tempts you to turn it tall, but its weight suggests your timid instincts might be best for a wide positioning. Many gamers insist vertical is no good for game discs, and the opposing side often yells "noob" in between "rofls."

I'm sure there's even game theory involved with what type of gamer you are -- perhaps vertical console gamers are the type who are more bold and seldom save, quickly bypassing text and cutscenes. While horizontal console gaming hands prefer a more methodical gaming experience, and always double check missions before setting out on a quest. But enough psychobabble -- let's just hear which of the two you prefer -- horizontal or vertical?

Vertical systems run cooler*, which means a longer life and less crashing, so I say vertical.

* I have no proof of this.

My Wii is vertical and looks horride when horizontal seeing as it was designed with the intention of it being vertical in the first place.

I put mine in the vertical position. It saves space for me, and plus, it looks sexy standing upright next to my other systems.

Vertical all the way. Both my 360 and Wii stand vertical, and I plan on buying a cradle/stand for my 360, because I really enjoy the assurance that I have with my Wii being in it's cradle.

Horizontal all the way and forever. When thinking of the inertia physics involved with a disc spinning vertically with gravity not being spread out across the disc's surface I start to grow OCD from my extremities. Plus, you never know when they're gonna tip over unless you shove it inbetween table/cabinet legs.

Microsoft customer service even told me on the phone once to NOT use the 360 vertically - it can cause problems. Horizontal all across the board for me.

Wii=Vertical
PS3=Horizontal
360=Vertial
Ps2=Vertoal
PC=Vertical
These are the best positions for each console, so Vertical Wins

the Wii does not look good horizontal, not good at all. Mine stands high and proud like the Washington Monument, it's really stable to boot...

Unlike my 360 which I wouldn't trust to stand vertical. I can just picture it now. Playing GoW co-op when it topples over and the disc shoots out at mach 5, decapitating me, my girlfriend, my cat or all 3. I'm not down with that. Horizontal mambo for the 360.

Horizontal, because I have my Wii in a cabinet anyway, and it kept falling over. Also, on the rare occasion I use the gamecube controller it always gets pulled over, so horizontal FTW.

Horizontal on the 360. It goes in the cabinet with the DVR and such. I like the idea that my $400 toy won't fall over. And when those wired GH2 guitars come out, I am going to strum easier.

Here's the real question. Invert Y, yes, no? (me yes and I don't know a single soul who doesn't.

I've been running out of entertainment center space for years so the rise of vertical consoles is helping me delay the inevitable -- throwing out my old shit or buying more shelves. My Wii, 360, and PS2 are upright. My ps3 is horizontal because if that shit ever happens to fall I will murder myself.

Dreamcast Horizontal (obviously)
PS2 Horizontal (I'm too cheap to by a stand for it)
360 Horizontal (I don't trust it since the disc ddoesn't click in and doesn't seem to be held steady enough)
Wii Vertical (it came with the stand and only looks presentable that way to it had to be so)

this is getting a bit one sided, a bit less than that tetris/pacman thing though.
as far as i see, most poeple put it up straight, exept those who just don't have the room for it.
my Wii's up and my PS2 down, my soon to get 360 is going to stand upright so i have more horizontal space for my games.
so yeah, I am most focused on putting them up.

Xbox 360 and ps3 should be horizontal, too many accidents have happened with xbox 360's tilting with disc in tray. The wii seems to run fine vertical, but i agree with fronz up there, physics will give the horizontal console better stability due to gravity being proportional on the entire disc surface and not just on the side.

Err, my PS2 is wedged in a book shelf at a funny angle, resting against some books. If I had a choice Id prob put it flat along the top of my TV. My Wii looks nice flat along-side it\underneath it. But atm its looking very nice vertical next to my TFT monitor.

I've heard that the disc drive in PS2's can become broken (and give that dreaded read error) if you put them vertical for a long period, and I think I also heard that Sony did this intentionally to make you buy more PS2's since Sony didn't do repairs at first, but I could be dead wrong. Either way, the even-force-on-disc thing is reason enough for me to be horizontal, except maybe the Wii, so I vote horizontal.

i like the fact the option is there...

i usually start out vertical then end up horizontal in the end as i have with my ps2 / ps3 / and 360...

now i would like to have the wii horizontal too, but just looks like ass if not vertical.. :(

Gravity doesn't really play in when you're talking vertical though, the disc is on a centrifuge. All the glaring at it in the world wouldn't affect the fact that so long as that disc spins at it's constant rate, it'll never be affected.

Vert 360, vert wii, vert PS2 when it was first released, then later became dated looking. PS3, god forbid, but it'll stay horizontal even if I never own one.

Fronz's Avatar

tru deanhatescoffee, but there's no way that thing is tipping over, and the cds themselves are horizontal inside them. and not even sony would want to release a ps3 as big as a pc case for now.

Well right now I have my xbox 360 and wii horizontal because they are in my cabinet. I love the way they look vertically, but i spent a lot of money on those systems so if it falls over and breaks im screwed. Also, think about the 360. The hard-drive onthe 360 is quite heavy, so if the 360 tips over, not only can the system gain damage, but the disc will get fucked too because of the lack of disk-stabilization in the 360. Horizontal for me.
Jayeugene's Avatar
Jayeugene at 01/16/2007 18:34
i think that if anyone says vertical and then ever has a problem, like i have in the past, will be converted to horizontal. All depends on experiences. Vertical looks cool, saves space on occasion, but then when your disc gets f'd in the drive and you get screwed over for 60 bucks or even the price of your console, then you will forever be horizontal.

People, PC cases may be "vertical" but the disc drives in them are horizontal. Show me a PC drive that is vertical and I'll give ya a BJ. Something tells me they don't make them that way for a reason.

vertical! i dont like stacking systems, and it saves a ton of space.

i would be scared to put a ps3 vertical though, its sooooo damn huge! if that things falls over itll be like 9/11 all over again.
