Game Debate to the Death!<br> Unreal Tournament VS Quake photo

Last week I asked everyone what game debates they wanted to see, and one topic that got a lot of praise was developer debates. It's the best suggestion I've read in a while and I'm definitely going to designate a few weeks to that theme, but first I want to hear which game developers you'd like to argue over. So on top of this week's debate vote, also leave a few comments telling me what some of your favorite developer studios are that you'd love to stand behind in a fight to the death.

This week's debate comes from DaedHead8's suggestion of the Quake series versus the Unreal Tournament series. It's time to put your fragging fingers to the test -- tell us which FPS series is better, and why? Take a break from playing BioShock, cast your votes, give us a reason for your decision, get some friends to give their opinions, and check back next week for the winner.

I’m pretty even headed on most topics, but how does this even qualify as a debate? How is Quake anywhere NEAR as good as UNREAL FUGGIN TOURNAMENT!?!?!?

CMON!!

There's a debate? I coulda sworn only one of these series actually has an impact today.

UT.

Quake doesn't even know what it is as a series. We're not going to play Quake Wars because it's Quake, we are going to play it because it's Enemy Territory.

sorry Carmack, I've got to go with Unreal. when a FPS series' engine evolves into something FF13 runs on, you know you've won.

Even though I enjoy playing Quake, UT has more fun and replay value for me.

UT, hands down.

Unreal Tournament is the game that Quake 3 tried to be. Now it's almost ten years after the original UT and we're on UT 2007 (I refuse to call it UT3), where the hell is Quake 3? I see no more Arena games... oh wait, that's right, it sucks.

<takes deep breath> Ok, now that I have calmed down, the UT franchise is superior in almost every iteration – including the sometimes unjustly maligned Unreal Championship (especially no 2!)

If more people showed support for this gem, maybe we would see more spinoffs of the series that catapulted, nay, defined, Multiplayer FPS.

Definitely Unreal. I have just had so much fun with that game at both LANs and over the internet.

So count my vote as Unreal.

Unreal Tournament and I'll tell you why. Quake may be the start of online multiplayer, but UT is the staple of it for all to look at. Want a jampacked multiplayer with tons of people? UT. Want community support? UT. Want the basic satisfaction of running someone down with a hover car? UT. Yea yea there IS Quake Wars. Yet I just remembered that when I thought of ID. I remembered Doom. It's out there.... Yet UT continues to be as good as it was the first time without alienating their fans. Unless an Unreal Tournament movie is scheduled, I'll continue to prefer it over Quake.

Oh shit Kevin Pereira is pissed cause I said UT was better then Quake. Now a famous person I'll never meet in real life is mad at me!

Quake. Quake II and Quake 3 hold special places in my heart. UT feels cheap and plasticy (this isn't a bad thing, it's part of UT's charm). Quake feels solid more fluid.

Wow, I feel kinda bad since I'm a big quake fan, specially q3 :(. UT is really great but it just diddnt feel the same. Here in sout america quake was kind of a big thing, tournaments and all, specially for the batshit crazy deathmatches.

So my vote goes to quake, although we've already lost.

Another vote for Unreal.

And as far as the FFXIII discussion, no, FFXIII does NOT run on the Unreal3 engine; it runs on the SquareEnix designed White Engine. The first (and so far, only) Square Enix game to use the Unreal3 engine is Last Remnant.

Unreal fucking Tourney, man! Quake is... I don't know. It has always felt like a diluted game. Liquefied and processed down for consumption by jerk-offs (no offense to Quake fans here, just my experience).

UT was always better to me. Better maps, much better weapons, more fun peeps to play with.

Quake I introduced mouse support + 3dFX hax
Quake II + super hero mod owned my high school years.
Quake III owned my high school years + some college + I regularly still face Fata1ty for domination rounds...

Quake FTW

For pure skill based throwdown? Quake 3: Arena, hands down. It's so tight, simple, and balanced that it comes down to pure skill who comes out on top. When we put on our suits and ties at the local LAN parties we play Quake 3 to decide who roxxor at teh fps.

For pure fun, madness, and plenty of content to keep the maps and gametypes new for hours and hours? UT, hands down. Between the metric fuckton of maps that come with every version of UT, the mutators that turn any game into a unique experience, and the loads of fun gametypes, we spend a lot of time play UT before anyone gets tired of it.

When it's time to decide who wins the last soda, it's time for Quake 3. When it's time to have some pure fucking fun, it's time for UT.

UT wouldn't exist without Quake -- Quake.

As far as the debate goes, I'd like a SK/Epic free for all, but the Gears/UT crowd is way bigger than the Eternal Darkness crowd.

Maybe Atlus vs. SquareEnix?

lmao, UT? Q3 was ok until the spammer who loops around the map firing at spawn points goes and wins 10 matches in a row with a million point lead. UT all the way baby.

I vote Unreal, but only because it has had more success as a series. To be honest though, I'm a big Quake 3 player, and Unreal feels slow and insignificant in comparison. So yeah, Unreal is a more successful series (definitely not better games, pfft), but Quake 3 is the epitome of fragfest, and is what every Unreal game wishes it could be. Pure fuckin adrenaline
